My dad always grew Kennebec potatoes. One year while digging them, I was teasing my dad about saving the little tiny ones, that they were “dear”. “You’ll be sorry when you’re starving and wishing you had kept them”. I kept them all and pressure canned a quart of them for my dad for Christmas. We all laughed about those “dear” potatoes. What a wonderful memory! 🥔💙

My mom told a story of when she as VERY young. She was maybe three or four. She spent a lot of her early years at her grandpa's farm. Both her parents worked. They owned a furniture building business. Anyway, her grandpa had hogs that he let till his potatoes garden space. Months later, it came time to dig the potatoes. She saw her grandpa digging those potatoes out of the 'hogs field' and just started balling her eyes out. When he was able to get her to stop crying enough to be understood, he had a hard time not laughing. He also had some 'splaining to do! Turns out she was upset because he was digging up the hogs eggs! She thought the hogs had been nesting and laying eggs just like the chickens! She didn't think it was fair to steal all their eggs. So, hog eggs or potatoes, they all taste good to me. Thank you Stacy for sharing this info. I always enjoy his visits to your homestead. I learn so much from you. God bless. Take care. And stay vigilant.

I love potatoes a whole lot and so loved this video!! I worked 16 yrs. as an early childhood educator and so many parents voiced concerned about my serving potatoes to the kiddos. Too often I would hear that potatoes have no nutritional value and I would just smile and tell those negative nellies about the vitamin c and fiber that potatoes provide and encouraged them to look up for themselves just how good potatoes are as opposed to listening to just what someone, who obviously doesn’t care for potatoes, has to say about them. I was also razzed by fellow employees because I would peel and prepare fresh potatoes instead of processed ones. Their words, “Ms Julie likes to do things the hard way.” My reply, “No, just the best way!” Thanks again to you and Terry and God Bless😊

Thanks for this video D&S ! Love the purple ! I chit egg sized potatoes, no cutting.. in egg carton for a few weeks. I plant them deep and really don't do much but water. I also cage them with tomato cages to give more space. For each plant. I typically harvest 5-7 pounds from 1potato ! I mulch or put dirt on top of the soil starts cracking early on. I pulled a Yukon early to put a cucumber in behind it.. it yielded 4 pounds .. from a 1/4 of a pound of potatoes... the mother was still firm, and it had about 5 wee potatoes still attached so I popped it back in the ground. I cut the stalks off and the thing is still growing 😃 I had nothing to gain and nothing to loose. I am letting God do the increase. Love and God bless

However, I’ve discovered that there is a big difference between commercial farming and homestead farming. My wife and I make bed to North Carolina 10 years ago and much to our disappointment, white potatoes don’t grow well in this climate and I’m not a big fan of sweet potatoes. The Adirondack Blue’s look purple until they’re cooked! Then they turn a beautiful blue color. They’re really good baked or roasted because they have more starch than typical boiling potatoes. Oh and the plants have a purple tint so they’re easy to tell apart.

Stacy, I love to eat my potatoes raw with a little salt. My Grandmother used to have me peel her potatoes. Then she would tell me to stop eating them or we would not have enough to eat when they were through cooking. Me and her had a great time cooking together. I miss her so much. But I taught my children to cook at an early age. Just like she taught me. And those times have really made a lot of memories. God bless you and Doug! Please keep doing these videos. I am learning so much. Plus the ones I already know brings back memories of her. Thank you!

Every where I've lived, the soil was heavy clay (also before I learned a lot about compost and soil amendments) and I never got potatoes to grow. Now I'm on an old cattle ranch with almost no clay. I had some russets sprouting, so I stuck them in the ground. So far they are doing great! We are in extreme heat and drought, with no cold weather for the next 3-4 months. If they produce, I will sure be planting a lot more! Texas Deb ❤️

@@flatlander6442 Perhaps canning them, if they start to get soft or sprout. Another method worth giving a shot is to bury a metal garbage can to create a root cellar effect. It would definitely need to be in a covered and shaded area there. Worth giving it a try. Or in your zone you grow them in the winter months, perhaps keep them stored in the ground and use as needed. I'm in colder zone, so I'm throwing out ideas. Best wishes! God bless!

Stacey, thank you for this video. It brought back so many memories of my grandpa who lived through the Great Depression as a kid and his family were potato farmers. That is how they survived it. When I was a girl, one night he came to dinner, and he named 100 different ways to make potatoes and how they got through those times. We were eating my mom's pot roast made with vegetables from our garden and the meat came from a dairy farmer friend of theirs we would go visit. My parents would bring home half a cow and stick it in our huge chest freezer in the garage. Childhood was hard work but loved it all the same and getting back to my roots with growing these days. I just wish grandpa were still around to ask farming questions. Glad I have Doug and Stacey!!
