They probably need a textured surface to grow on, the paper towel should help! If you're not worried about "ruining" them though then you could (wet) sand then with coarse sandpaper to avoid any paper towel related mishaps

@@OoohUSuk That would create glass dust and even a small amount cab cause silicosis that isn't detected until years later. Unless you know how to wet sand and control the glass dust, and explain that in every suggestion to others, it's best to leave that to people who have been through training on glass coldworking safety.

Chia pets are unglazed terra-cotta. It's porous and absorbent.
@dandersonanza
@dandersonanza Жыл бұрын
If memory serves, the secret sauce to Chia Pets from the early 90s was that the pets were made from terra-cotta. Your efforts with a paper towel seem the closest so far to mimicking a naturally porous surface, but I worry it will hold water a little too close to the seeds and still encourage mold. Good luck!

What you need to do is slightly sand everything with a rough grit sandpaper or fingernail file that will help usually the reason that chia seeds grow on the Chia things is because they're made of terracotta and you put water on the inside and chia seeds on the outside and they stick because it's terracotta .. what's special about terracotta is the porous surface that's all you need...
@KatieCottingham
@KatieCottingham Жыл бұрын
Please don't sand a glass surface or suggest doing so without putting in the proper safety information. Silicosis affects animals as well as humans and you don't want someone losing their best friend to a lung tumor caused by a lack of knowledge of glass dust safety.

The seeds won't sprout on a slick surfaces. The "Chia Pets" work because the seeds grow on terracotta figurines. Because the terracotta is given a textured surface to apply the seeds to and the terracotta is porous, it retains moisture while having something for the roots to grab onto. Try wrapping it with a cotton cheesecloth cover and once you paint the seeds on, you must keep it damp at all times until the chia has sprouted. That means spritzing with water several times a day. The paper towel will fail when it gets soggy and likely tear apart. And the tape won't stick once its wet.🙄

Try to sand down if it's made from porcelain or if it's plastic just make it a rough surface so the Chia seeds have groozing gaps to kind of suction to with the moisture and then by the time it's dried it I'll be hard and crispy and won't have to worry about it falling off and that way you can get a much thinner preventing mold

Dont use the tape underneath just wet the papertowls and place on top and mold it to the object let it dry and it will form better than just spray the paper and roll the object in the seeds and than just keep spraying. I never done this but i feel like this technique would work because your keeping it dry.

If you do thins again find something that is not glazed . They need some texture and moisture to sprout and red ware ( like a flower pot ) is the best but you could get a kilnfired tree at a ceramics or DIY shop . And plant it earlier so you will have the time to see it get green . And once you have all the seeds... on and ready sprinkle the whole thing with cinnamon. This will help it not mold .
