That motto is how I ended up with a 13 year old desktop PC as my daily driver. In terms of efficiency (both power and my time) I should have upgraded years ago, I was just unaware that I should care about the price of used office PCs that are much faster. If your hardware is a decade old and you care more about it just working than being authentic, pick up a used Lenovo or Dell office PC. Then, once you have that running and are happy with it, you can cannibalize your previous build for video card and the like. At no point in this process are you left without a fully functional desktop PC. So sometimes it's a little bit broken but you don't even think to ask the question because nothing has changed. That 13 year old machine would still work fine if I felt like getting another case and CPU heatsink for it. There, now you can live by "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" by invoking "but would I know if it was broken? I have to clean and inspect, right?". 😈

Honestly, even once you and Steve fix everything and get the Cursed Mac back together, I'd say it isn't quite "upgraded as much as possible" until you give it a full color CRT and, as TaijanDean suggested, internal stereo speakers inside the case. I only say this because you're able to get it to boot Mac OS 8.1 and use CDs, I think it needs to have the A/V fidelity to match that so you can play games like Myst, The Journeyman Project, and most importantly the wonderful MacPlay port of Wolfenstein 3D on it.

It's funny when you are calling a friend or service pro that knows who you are and they answer on the other end, "What is it now?" or walking into a supply business and you get the, "Okay, what kind of impossible thing are we trying to do today?" The latter happened to me because I have an electrical and auto supply store near me that they usually hear my wonky whims for a project and a list of parts for said project. Most of mine borderline automation projects but aren't or combining building electrical products with automotive. My trailer wiring I use outdoor PVC conduit boxes to house the wiring for the lights to keep moisture and other debris from the connections. It also gives it a nicer appearance using double insulated wire, outdoor electrical wire glands and for wire traveling any significant distances where it can be exposed to crud inside conduit as well.

QUICK TIP Already not followed... I have touched my soldering iron before, the worst was when I was drinking, trying to fix my head phones, and I picked up the iron with my right dominate hand like I was going to pick up a pencil. Yeah I got crispy skin for that, and then it blistered. Edit: looking at my index finger I realise that a chunk of my fingerprint is just SMOOTH because I picked up a soldering iron by the hot part with my fingers like itwas a pencil... while drun.

In similar situations, I've found it useful to assemble the thing and then try to reflow everything. In other words, I'd put the CPU in the socket and then heat everything back up real good and maybe kinda push the CPU in and around a little bit. That way you get everything good and aligned while the solders hot and then the CPU itself keeps everything in place until it cools. On second thought tho, idk how hot you'd wanna get the CPU. I've done this mostly with cheaper components lol

yea when that CPU popped out of the board I cringed a little, you may have connection from top of the socket to the bottom but it doesn't mean you have it from the top of the board to the bottom. If you lifted a pad and broke a trace on the top side, welp you have to remove it all and risk doing more damage to find it ... which happens to all of use from time to time, it sucks (I did it on my atari XE, the sockets were letting the memory upgrade disconnect, so I removed the socket and killed a trace on the top side)
