In case you’re wondering, if you read “red #4, natural red, crimson lake, carmine, E120, or cochineal” written in the ingredient list, it got bugs. Edit: also more than just food has the dye in it like makeup, paint, nail polish... if you’re a vegan and really worried about it, there’s tons of vegan brands that use other dyes.

I have friends who eat honey and some who don’t. They obviously can’t control everything (even the FDA allows for traces of insects in most foods... especially organic produce) but they can do what’s best for them.

@@justadragonryu Just FYI human production and consumption of honey is actually good for the bees. They make more than they need by a truly extreme margin, and if left unchecked they'll keep storing it until they have no room for anything else, at which point a large portion of the hive will embark on an exodus elsewhere (it's called swarming) and usually just get themselves killed. I know most livestock are kept in absurdly nightmarish conditions, but bees genuinely benefit from partnership with humanity. Also, the usual vegan alternative to honey is agave nectar, which is slightly less healthy to consume, is harvested via unethical, exploitative labor practices, and taking it in the quantities required to turn a profit means that the bats who subsist on it in the wild will starve.
