Central Florida's housing has not kept up with its population boom, and it's even more dire when it comes to the availability of affordable housing.

my youngest son 29, lives in an apartment complex, and it’s a two bedroom two bath, the kitchen does not have any drawers in it, he and two other roommates, rent it, it cost them $2000 a month. It does not include electricity, or even water. The prices are outrageous. With his job, he still wouldn’t be able to afford to live on his own. It’s pretty sad nowadays.

My 24 year old son pays $1800 for 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom in Orlando. His yearly rent is 50% of his annual income

I have a friend paying $700/month to live in 2 Matson containers: one container for her bed and another for the kitchen area (with no stove or hot water). Has to share bathroom/shower. I know of others who are paying $600 or more to live in abandoned boats, tents in someone's backyard, or to rent a bedroom in someone's house. $500/month for a new 2 bedroom apartment is like a fairy tale for us here in the Aloha state. Glad that lady was finally able to move out of the shelters into a beautiful apartment.

Shouldn't developers be building more affordable units if the demand is so high? Certainly they want to make money. So, what is preventing them? Is it zoning laws, regulations? You could dig a little deeper.

I wouldn't be surprised if the developers decided it lines their pockets better when they produce fewer houses and just rent them out.

If government is just handing out more money for people to buy houses with, then the prices will remain higher as people get their high asking prices on the houses. People don't bring down asking prices until they have heard "No" a few times or nobody takes it for a few months at that price. Also, if we increase minimum wages for people to afford more, the cost of living will just go up with the wages so people get even less with their dollars - like California.
