how does assign play works? When I assign a play to a PG for example, SF and SG will run the play depending on who is holding the ball when the play is called and if I don't assign the play, PG and SG will run it depending on who is holding the ball when the play is called.

based on my experience, I think the person assigned to the play will be the main shooting option when the full play is ran (not all the time though). However, as you probably know already, some of the plays' early actions can be used to generate quicker wide open shots without actually running the play fully. in your example, if you assign a play to the PG, almost always the play will start with SG/SF (depending on the play), and most likely the PG will be the main option of the play (e.g. if it is a 3PT type play then the PG will likely take the shot if the play is ran fully). Also I noticed that if you don't assign the play to anyone, most of the time it's the PG or SG who will be involved in the primary action which is consistent with what you observed. Long winded response but I hope this helps.
