Nicely done!! I also give it a lite feeding that I water in once planted. Thanks for the informative video. I'm now inspired to have a cup of coffee!!

The organic fertilizers I`ve used contained up to 20 soil microbes. I noticed that a tiny patch of mushrooms sprouted where I dropped some and mushrooms sprouted where I used it in my garden beds and by my fruit trees.
@Philsfigs6 ай бұрын
I appreciate hearing that as I love to know about how well fertilizers interact with soil microbes as I think how it must directly correlate with nutrient uptake and bioavailability for my trees. Thank you!

Good Job!!, I plant my fig trees completely different from any different fruit tree I use VS Aka Vasile Herman method/way I dig square hole instead of round hole and fill the hole with rich soil and build amount for the fig tree and force the mount with widely separated bricks or stones I found it to be working well for me specially in a muddy area. I test the soil for PH and add lime if need it and mulch it ...I make sure the mulch wont touch the trunk of the tree
@Philsfigs7 ай бұрын
Thanks! Interesting method and I can see how having your tree on an mount would be good if you are in muddy or poor draining areas. Testing for pH and adding lime is fantastic and almost a must if you're down here in my area (unless you're right on the ocean). Excited to see those trees at some point!

The problem I had down here in Georgetown SC the neighborhood I am in you dig a hole you dug a bucket that fills with water lol. There is a lot of clay. I almost killed two fig trees. Took me over a year to find a way to grow them in the ground. What I had to do is plant the fig in a mound that is the only way I could keep them from drowning. The trees are rocking this year I have a drip system this year. The soil my you looks very nice....
@Philsfigs6 ай бұрын
Wow that's a lot of clay and water saturation! I am very impressed with how you navigated around the clay by mounding it up on top. I am right near the water but the soil I have is pretty sandy and has good organic matter in it.

Good information about growing in shade. I have a bunch of shady spots which is why I'm doing containers so I can move them around and chase the sun. That is some really good looking soil you have!!! Thanks for sharing.

What zone are you in? Do the trees ever experience dieback where you are?
@Philsfigs7 ай бұрын
I'm in Zone 8b here in the southeastern coast of North Carolina. We really only have to worry about dieback when our trees wake up from dormancy early before our last freeze - April 1st. We can have mild and warm days in March, followed by a late freeze every few years which can cause dieback. Normally we don't see much dieback. Lots of big 15 ft trees around here.

The hardheaded armadillos that keep rooting around in my grass clippings mulch and stealing the huge worms and uprooting my food got a big surprise....nearly a kilo of very hot red pepper powder. They didn`t stick around the second time after their noses melted! Ha! I ordered more. Keeps the bean eating bunny away from my young plants too.
@Philsfigs6 ай бұрын
Oof I haven't had armadillo issues haha! That's good to know about the chili powder! thank you! I'm going to have to try that with the squirrels.

How far apart are you planting them ?
@Philsfigs6 ай бұрын
Thes trees in the bocce court / nursery area are around 6ft apart. On the other side of my yard I have 3 figs and two pomegranates that are all almost 9 ft apart. I hope that helps!

Apparently the Italians historically just stuck a cutting in the ground. Over time I get more lazy and dig a very small hole
@Philsfigs7 ай бұрын
Oh yea @epigeneticnerd4244 . In fact, I've read that figs are one of the first fruits to be "farmed" back during the beginnings of civilization, as it can grow from a cutting being placed in the ground. Fascinating. This video really explains how to plant it and help it jump start it's growth quickly right after bein planted.

how long for a fig tree that size to bear fruit?
@Philsfigs7 ай бұрын
It will fruit this year! In fact this tree put out fruit last year. Makes a fig tree amazing is that they'll fruit in the first few years of life.
@CMJSC19977 ай бұрын
@@Philsfigs nice! how many years typically does it take for a fig tree to fruit? I bout one from walmart this spring and i have no clue how old it is and dont know when to expect fruit.
@Philsfigs7 ай бұрын
@@CMJSC1997 It can fruit as early as this year! if you put it in a pot with some all around good fertilizer and potting mix it could fruit for you this year. All fruit this year will form on the figs new growth. Cheers and happy growing.
