At 5:28 I note you have very obvious vertical bands where it appears that the power is varying across each scan. A) have you noticed this? B) have you any idea what is causing it? I have encountered the same issue with a different 20 watt laser brand and a significantly different machine. I am using Lightburn ( and also another software) and both create the same issue but my bands are significantly more obvious than yours. Any help /thoughts would be appreciated.

If you use a diffused light source using either drawing film or even white shower curtain on the opposite side and above the shiny surface you should be able to capture the engraving easier. Just google photographing jewellery or light tents :)

Maybe a stupid idea, but would a peltier-element work as a heatsink? This way you can actively cool your laserpiece.

It's possible. I don't have one to test with so I can't confirm the effectiveness.

Could you cut slots in your aluminum heat sink and add a fan for air circulation?

The laser is fully enclosed and I have it hooked up to my extractor fan so it's pulling a lot of air over the aluminum block as is. I think the next step would be a water cooled block and some thermal compound between the stainless and the aluminum. Alternatively, running more passes would probably be more efficient. I was just too lazy to test running lots of passes. 🤣

Well I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. With the same settings on an xTool D1 20w. There isn't anything showing on the stainless steel. Any advise, anyone ?

Get a MOPA.

Firstly, are you SURE it's stainless steel? Lots of fake stuff out there.
