Just as Abraham "believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness"? Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you shall all the nations be blessed." So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. - Galatians 3:6-9
Paul is helping them see this long history of how faith actually works. He wants the Galatians to know that faith for believers is not some new idea that he just made up. It's an old idea. It's an idea that is as old as the ancient text. In fact, the Scripture talks about faith a lot. Faith is a prescription given to man by God. It was realized in a man who was an icon of the Jewish faith. A man dubbed the "father of faith" - his name was Abraham. And he, a former unbeliever, heard God and by faith "believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness." Again, a former pagan unbeliever, Abraham became a follower of God by faith. In addition, Paul clarifies that the originating promise God gave to Abraham was one for "all nations," which include non-believers.
But again, we need to remember why Paul is arguing this matter. He does this because Jewish followers of Jesus insisted or implied that faith was not enough. Some insisted or implied that new believers needed to adhere to old Jewish customs before securing their faith. And Paul, who is a razor-sharp lawyer, debunks this legalism using their own book, an icon of their faith, and well-known promises given by God that they recited to prove his point - it's faith alone and nothing else.
But why is this so important?
Because we all come to God just as we are, we bring nothing to God to earn salvation. Salvation is attained by Jesus in his life, death, and resurrection from the dead. It is faith in what Jesus did that saves mankind because no one could do what Jesus did. If we could have, someone would've done it, but no one did till Jesus did.
So today is your day to come to Jesus. But don't bring anything else, because it doesn't matter. There is no good deed you can do to earn salvation. He did the good deed - Jesus died for you. In addition, there is no bad deed you need to clean up first - Jesus will take care of that too. He endured the shame and penalty for our sins on the Cross. His sacrifice is the payment for every bad deed we have ever done or ever will do. Faith is all you need. Just come to him today. So if today is a day you come to him for the first time, serve him as we all do by faith as the Lord and Savior of all nations in all time.
ASK THIS: Are you ready to come to Jesus?
DO THIS: Come to Him by faith alone and nothing else.
PRAY THIS: God, I bring everything to you, just as I am.
