This song was written and sung by Pete Townsend . It was from their 1982 studio album "Its Hard". When Townsend introduces this song in concert he tells the crowd, " This is what happens if you put too much white powder up your nose". Some say it had to do with his recent rehab. The bass line and the drum beat are so powerful, with the guitar work keeping you entertained. Great reaction. ☃️🎅🌟🎄🎁 ...."Please Come Home For Christmas" .....THE EAGLES.... Pete must've made up and made nice with the Catholic Church, because originally it was a slam on the Vatican and R.C. church - In Concert, Bishops/Cardinals were dressed in red frocks (dressed to kill) strutting their stuff onstage with 'Nuns' - as it's all a put on, a sham by "His Eminence" the Pope - but all such references have been expunged! Doesn't have much reference, if any, to drugs (not nearly as the Vatican reference).

"Eminence" is high power or fame, so an "Eminence Front" is the illusion of such, as Pete Townshend indicates with the line, "It's a put-on." He said the song is about "the absurdity of drug-fueled grandiosity," possibly related to the Ativan detox program he went through shortly before writing the song.

One of my Fav Who songs! About 35yrs ago, I was on a business trip, and was heading back to my room when I heard 2 teens come out of a different room, and one of them said to the other 'Eminence Front'. I was tempted to say 'It's a put-On' as they passed, but didn't. But was surprised to see much younger kids seem to have known or heard of this song that was, even then, older than them! I'll never forget the night I had front row, center stage tickets to see The Who at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. When The Who perform live, Pete Townshend tends to talk to the audience a lot and describe the meaning of many of their songs. That night in Connecticut when the spotlight was on Pete introducing "Eminence Front" to the crowd, I was shocked when I looked and Roger Daltrey was kneeled down on the stage about 2 feet in front of me. Next thing I know, I'm carrying on a conversation with Roger Daltrey in the middle of a Who concert! I requested a song and he said the setlist for the night was already set. I asked it they'd play it the next night in Boston. I was there the next night, lo and behold The Who performed the song I requested the night before!

Well, well and well. The Who. My all time favorite Rock Band with so many gray songs over their time. Pete Townshed was a great composer and of course guitar player too. Everyone John Roger and Keith were ALL accomplished musicians and singers. Their have been many great drummers but Keith Moon was so great and love his style. Won’t Get Fooled Again…my favorite

The way they layer all the instruments one at a time at the beginning is amazing! You're hooked, waiting to hear what's next.

So many great Who songs, but I think this is my all time favorite. One of Townsend's best. If I had to pick another of my faves, it'd be "You Better You Bet". Such a fun beat.

The Who concert disaster 1979 when 11 people died in a stampede was last I saw them in concert. Never played Cincinnati again. Untill their Epic return to Cincinnati in 2020. Hate I missed it. After 43 yrs they got closure. Thanx so much, Stay groovy, take care, Peace

"It's a put on!" This song has a sort of strut to it. Townsend and Entwhistle were flexing on this one.

The Who have so many fantastic songs for you to get to including my favorite "I Can See for Miles" (1967). A few other great ones: "Love Reign O'er Me", "Magic Bus", and Pete Townshend's solo songs "Let My Love Open the Door" and "Face the Face".

You nailed it, Amber! I got so much into the vibe that I didn’t think about the lyrics for ages…..and when they finally hit I loved the song even more. Very clever way of expressing their idea….
