Superb review by somene who understands what the 70series is about. And great you emphasised the importance of a wider torque band with the V8. I have no doubt the fuel consumption of the V8 will be better in the tough slow going and when pulling a lot of weight because that is what I see now when doing trips in my manual V8 Troopy alongside friends driving the 2.8 prado auto. I expect the oil pan was changed to accommodate the live front axle. The 76 wagon rear springs are considerably shorter than the 78 Troopy and 79 cab-chassis - usually means harsher ride. I doubt it still has fewer leafs because the GVM of the 76 increased by 400+kgs last year.

Nice review! I just snuck in with an order for the V8 a few weeks before they closed the order book. Still waiting, 1 year and 8 months on. I love my V8s and manual transmissions so wouldn't touch the 2.8 four cylinder, but can definitely see the appeal this would have to older folk who are tired of shifting (or the younger ones who've never learnt) and those wanting to save on fuel and the ridiculous V8 registration fees. Turning off that lane departure rubbish every. single. time. is going to get old quickly but I'm really looking forward to finally owning one. Pity about the rear wheel track, shame on Toyota for not rectifying it after all these years. But them's the breaks. Gotta take the good with the bad and when it comes to the 70 series, there's plenty of the good.

Interesting how some people can't give up the idea a V8 is best, despite all the evidence. A well-designed smaller motor is not necessarily more stressed than a low-revving V8. 2.8’s Fuel efficiency and payload have really caught my attention. I’m thinking Africa overland use - negligible towing, long remote routes, bad fuel in some places. That extra range and payload could be quite handy. Reliability wouldn’t be an issue - hiluxes are everywhere so a bush mechanic can deal with it. V8 is sweet but 2.8 could make more sense.

Unless you stay in South Africa, modern diesel (includes new LC70 series) doesn't work in Africa as they require clean fuel which isn't available in most parts of Africa. You want a petrol vehicle with good parts availability in multiple African countries such as Jeep Wrangler. Or an old (before 1996) diesel that doesn't require clean fuel.
@Pkari11 ай бұрын
@@hi9580 while I agree on diesel issues, it's not that bad nowadays. In many big towns (speaking mostly for Eastern Africa) you can get good diesel and that's why I mentioned additional range being attractive (to get to good diesel, skip the questionable pumps). A 1HZ LC70/LC105 would be the fail safe diesel option in the bush, or a 1HD LC80, there are sooo many out there. I however find the appeal of modern engines so big especially for power on the open road that I would be willing to "risk it" given Toyota reliability and service reach. If you have done long climbs up Rift Valley escarpments with a fully laden 1HZ I'm sure you know what I mean...lots of noise and trucker pace. Price - the petrol options like an old Mitsubishi Pajero (Africa spec) are also very much on my mind. Given the lower purchase price the fuel math adds up. I would totally avoid the petrol Prado in this category - lethargic, overpriced. Weight - with thirstier petrols the problem of range also creeps in mostly due to weight...carrying all that extra fuel puts many LC100s and Prados that I've seen well over GVM. I'm no fan of heavy cars and would wish to never need a GVM upgrade - to me it's a big liability when driving solo (or without a convoy). That's another big reason the new 2.8 LC70 sounds appealing. Jeeps - would love to know more about their parts availability e.g. which generation/versions are the most covered. I have very limited experience with them in the african bush.

This video was about the new generation of engines, I guess some are euro 5-6, whereas in Africa we often have the option to buy euro 2-4 diesels new from Toyota/Isuzu/etc. The latter are very tolerant to poorer fuel and I would not mind fuelling them upcountry. The former - I would only fuel in the cities and largest towns at the premium petrol stations.

According to Toyota in their own words, the 2.8 equals or exceeds the torque of the 4.5 V8 from 1400-3400rpm. That might be difficult for people to understand when they see that the 2.8 peak torque of 500nm is listed as 1600-2800rpm. But note the word peak. So when it’s not at its peak 500nm at 1600-2800rpm. It may be at 430nm at say 1200rpm, thus equals the peak torque of the V8 and exceeds from 1600rpm. Also note Toyota claim the 2.8 makes 150kW at 3000rpm to 3400rpm. The V8 is strictly at 3400rpm.

It's unforgiveable IMO that Toyota neglects to install airbags in the rear seats; the old VW Amarok was panned for the same deficiency. Parents who carry kids in this vehicle are not doing the right thing by their kids. Ordinary handling, a wheezy old V8 and the dynamics of a rock really restricts it use to farm or commercial pursuits.

Agreed 100% however it's also important to note the the strength of the vehicle in side impact scenarios vs an air bag only protection environment. Also the distance the passenger sits from the impact point. Air Bags are a proven protection mechanism but they are only one. Certainly not defending the lack of Airbags and cutting corners, Toyota are famous for that. The most famous being the 2005 Hilux which came with one dashboard drink holder for the driver but none for the front passenger. The cut out was there and $20 later Retail you could add the drink holder yourself after market. Seriously.!.. Toyota hanging on to their reliability and re-sale value, if that ever disappears they are in trouble.

Putting a highly stressed low-capacity diesel engine into a 2 tonne+ truck that's going to spend its life traversing difficult terrain in a hostile environment is a recipe for disaster. It will however be fine for dropping your kids off at the local primary school.

Nope. Toyota could not fit the v8 in the bay, so they moved the starter motor to the middle of the v8 valley, then covered it with inlet maniforld and tonnes of stuff. Good luck changing your starter in the bush in a v8. And tow starting is not an option if it is an auto.

This or the 1gd Hilux? I kinda wish that the manual v8 has a 6 speed transmission like the hilux

Toyota is launching the turbo hybrid Tundra in Australia starting 2024. Expect a full hybrid Hilux later (mild hybrid first). Not sure the LC70 will ever go hybrid.

The current ones had Hilux gearboxes; you still want that?? Old TLC's had heavy duty Dyna boxes, until maybe 20 yrs ago.

Good farm truck maybe...Tow with it and the V8 will use LESS fuel...Cant wait to see Punters Chip these 4Cyl Engine and toast them in the process....Do the Math....The V8 runs 10 to 11 PSI boost stock...so what boost is the 4 Cyl at..I bet its at least 18 PSI....what will you do to get more than Stock power...Run 25 plus.....good luck with that. The EGT will go Ballistic and them boom chuck ala...... I own a 2013 V8 and I would still like to have the 70 they get in PNG!...It has the old straight 6 with Mech Injectors..yep they still make it brand new....Why the fuck can we have that option.

I heard the presenters big speel on the traction control. But what I didnt see was any proof or evidence? Imaging after giving that speech on Toyotas "famous renowned" traction control, you pop over to Pauls CarExpert channel and find out there isnt any traction control. Its literally like Toyota forgot to put it in at all 😂 You may want want to actually test things for yourself rather than just reading from the sales brochures. This will save misleading your viewers. 😁

When they slap a Hilux engine into a 70 series chassis, and change nothing, everyone goes crazy, change the seats, match the interior, upgrade the infotainment, and charge an extra 10k, then I'll be interested
@Afriqueleblanq10 ай бұрын
They have slapped in Hilux diffs and gearboxes ages ago, nobody seemed to notice. Maybe the fanatical owners aren't exactly the brightest??

The poor 4 cyl seems pretty stressed to pull the 7 series heavy lumps . Loaded upto the hilt and on a trip will bring out any weak points in the engines . Id'e rather a relaxed v8 than a stressed 4cy anyday .

@translumination200211 ай бұрын
You pay at least 80K for one and then you got to spend tens of thousands to get it to do what you want. Ridiculous. All the cost of development from Toyota have been amortized decades ago and they can't even get the wheel tracks to match. It's easy to fix because there's no electronics BUT electronics have been around for decades so people should just embrace it and learn to use them. I think the real reason people buy these things is because they can tax deduct all the costs and the service network is so big.

Nice review. Would I buy the 2.8 four or the V8. Neither. Prado, MUX, Pajero yep. Adelaide to Darwin I know what I would rather drive. Hardcore 4wd types yep go for it. But 90% of the people who buy them don't use it for what it was designed for! May I suggest penis extension? What really makes me laugh (and Toyota) is they haven't spent the money to fix the rear track. What a joke.
