I’d disagree with you - authoritarianism has always existed but we were asleep and walked around like “good little, well educated citizens” who believed that if we behaved well, we would achieve everything that we wanted and those in power were there to look out for our rights. The line that got me as an 18 year old was, "And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you" At that time ten years seemed like a lifetime away but that line made me realize that time is ticking away and one day I would be 28 years old. It forced me to think about life and how I wanted to live mine. It's now 22 years later and I'm 40, and while somethings didn't work out, I lived what some might call an 'alternative way of living', that was true to the person I am. No regrets. I didn't worry about the future, or what I 'should' be doing, and still don't, and I took the time to consciously live in the moments that were good and bad. I indeed 'did it my way' and here's to the next ten years which will no doubt fly by haha.
