One of the best ways to improve your fly fishing is to leave the spinning gear at home. You'll force yourself to learn how to cast in non ideal situations and you'll improve each and every time you go out. Great video, keep it up man.

I see you've gotten some good advice from other experienced flyfishermen, I'll add one more. When you're walking through shallow, rocky, moving water like you are at 4:35 pick up some rocks and look at what's on the underside. That will give you a good idea of what aquatic insects are around, and what size. Absent of a hatch on the surface, that's the best clue to what they might be eating. A really versatile fly you can carry from small to large is a Dave Whitlock Red Fox Squirrel Hair nymph. It's a great fly, I've used it all over the West. In small sizes it can imitate midges and mayflies, medium sizes for caddis larvae and bigger mayflies, and large for stoneflies or baby crawdads. It's buggy looking, not meant to catch fishermen, but fish. The buggier the better, and the more you fish it, the buggier it gets. It doesn't look like much but it catches fish like crazy. It's similar to a regular squirrel hair nymph but it has no wingcase, and the hair mixture is different. I do like it better with a bead head on it. It works well for smallmouth too. Good luck with your flyfishing, it can be very effective once you build confidence in it.

A word of advice when trout fishing in streams/rivers is that you want to work your way UPSTREAM. Trout tend to naturally face the current to forage for food. This way you'll spook a lot less fish so that you're coming up behind them.

Easiest way to get better at fly fishing is to not bring your spinning set up
@618Fishing4 жыл бұрын
Post Stalone did that on my last outing and I agree! If I do bring it I always use my fly setup first then throw the spinner before I move to my next spot
@K2mtp4 жыл бұрын
For real I would cringe when you went for the spin rod. Learn to use two flies under your indicator. Make sure the indicator is moving as fast or slower than the white bubbles in the water. If you are having trouble keeping the drag off the indicator then you might be trying to cast to far. Also in that spot you didn't think you had room to cast you were right, let the flies swing in the current which will load up your rod and you can just flip it up stream instead of false casting. If you are nymphing you really don't need to cast that much. You will get it dude
@juanrenteria87204 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Ditch the spin rod. Also, take a class at Orvis to see different casts and how to set up flies. Last 2 vida you've been using a huge indicator and looks like flies are rigged too long. Good luck!

I agree with a lot of the people commenting about the roll cast. Once you master that, your fly fishing life will get a lot easier. Also, match the hatch as they say! I'd start flipping some rocks in the stream over and see what insects are in there, and try to match them up. Entomology is half of fly fishing! As always, really great video!!! Nick, go upstream. You'll approach from behind the trout. Their noses are upstream. Make sure your indicator doesn't get downstream of your nymph (mend up as often as you need to), and use one heavy enough to get into the last few inches above the bottom. Keep at it, because you're winning. Your casting stroke is also looking better; but think depth, not distance. Go gettem.

I've recently found your videos and I'm enjoying them a lot. Brings me back to my early days chasing anything that swims. I have almost exclusively fly fished for the last 40 years. My advise to you is to get some proper casting lessons then it won't seems so difficult. Learn a little about mayflies, caddis flies and stoneflies. That will help you a lot. I'm impressed you kept at it and only used your spinning rod occasionally. Learn to swing flies in the current. That is cast across the creek at a 45 degree angle and let the flies sink and swing in the current. There is no mistake when you get a hit. The fact that your spinners were working tells me the fish were active and would have hit a wooly bugger swung in the current. Kudos to you for fly fishing. Oh and one last bit of advise. Never leave a run that you catch fish to go find fish. The first run you were at you caught fish. I hope I haven't ranted too much, and offended you. Bill Spicer Host- The New Fly Fisher Show

Hey I think I commented on a fly fishing video you did before. Keep at it, takes some time but worth it. Couple of comments based on this video. I come in peace with hopefully constructive feedback. 1. Your fly casting got a lot better 2. Don't be afraid to pitch and improvise around snags. If there's no back cast try to improvise a roll cast or even bow and arrow cast. Use the current/flow to help position the fly into likely spots. 3. In the fast current in that river you will struggle casting upstream. In strong current better to case downstream "streamer" style. Cast directly across or slightly downstream and let the fly work downstream in a fan action. In slack water or stalking fish you can fish upstream but in fast current the presentation is not so good. If you see a fish land the fly about a meter above it. 4. Work the margins! Usual rules, focus on fishy spots. Edge of slack water, around trees, etc. You can't cover water like with lure fishing so pick your spots. 5. Try some slightly bigger and brighter flies. Trout like glitter too! 6. Also think about working the fly e.g. figure of eighting or simple jerking. Work flies like you would work a lure. I don't want to talk too much just encourage all fishermen and women to try fly fishing. It takes time but it's cool. Ping me any questions or if above is unclear. Simon

Not sure exactly how far the trip would be, but you should make a trout series at the White River in Arkansas. The trip is about 4.5 hours from St. Louis. Staying in Mountain Home, AR would allow you to hit the White River and Norfork River. So long as the water is down you can easily target bigger browns in the winter. I’ve had a lot of success this winter and I’m very much a novice at targeting trout. Love the content regardless!

When your line travels down stream it will raise your flys to the surface then in one motion flip your fly rod with a roll cast upstream. Takes a bit of practice but will save you from wind knots. Try to only use a dry cast for dry fly's. Good luck dude and thanks for all the dope videos

I have one tip for ya for trout stream fishing...take it for what it’s worth. When wading in a small stream, as you are in this video, you’re better served starting low and fishing upstream. Fish orient upstream and can see for a further distance above and upstream than they can downstream. They are also more alert to food coming down from upstream and also to disturbances. When you wade, it sends sediment downstream, which is probably why it got murkier the further you went. Hope it helps...

belaireguy411 definitely. When the water gets below 45 degrees the fish start to feed less and less, trying to move as little as possible and save energy. When it’s cold out, you either want to give them a big meal they can’t resist like a streamer, or downsize to a really small nymph and hit them right on the nose with it and hope they bite lol

You're best bet nymphing would be to fish where there are riffles and etties with light amounts of whitewater. This does 2 things. It increases the oxygen level of the water, pushes food towards the fish. They will stack up in these areas for these reasons. Also, in heavily pressured areas, fish become indicator shy. Use a giant dry fly as an indicator and a midge or other nymph under it. Be ready as sometimes they hit the dry fly!!!
@Mainland4444 жыл бұрын
Try streamer fishing in areas you would be tempted to throw that spinner. Various retrieve speeds or erratic "go - go - stop - go - stop" type of retrieves can very much mimic an injured baitfish. Use woolly buggers or sculpin minnows or any pattern you can find online that imitates those creek chubs in your waters. Cast to the very far side of that run you were hooking trout on your spinner next time, soon as the fly lands start stripping it in... the fish usually trigger within the first few pulls. Good luck and it's awesome to see you developing as a fly fisherman!! Tight lines!!

You sure can fish that spinner great. I have been fly fishing since the early 90s. We have a lovely trout river here in Utah called the Provo River. Huge brown trout fishery. The key to fly fishing is understanding to some degree the entomology of the river you are fishing. Throwing out random flies is not an effective method of fishing. The best short cut for learning this information is often visiting a local fly shop. A half an hour of time taken in a fly shop not only will increase you effectiveness, it give you an opportunity to support a local business a bit. There is nothing like fishing flies that were tied for the specific river you are fishing. If you ever want to come out to Utah for a fishing trip, let me know. I would be delighted to take you out.

I mostly fish for carp, tench and bream, occasionally deadbaiting for pike and zander as well), and I can see a potential fly rod lying around unused, taking up space, because I'd probably never feel like using it... just like my spinning tackle, haha. Way too much casting for my taste. I do love to watch others doing it though :)
@flamingviperv122 жыл бұрын
Tip that you can use if you want to use a fly but aren't good enough to use a flypole. So what you do is you take your normal rod, then you get yourself this clear bobber, now usually on bigger bodies of water you would fill it with water, about 3/4ths, but on a smaller body of water like the creek in this video, you would keep it empty, then what you do next is tie your fly like 4-6 feet if I remember correctly under the bubble and then you got one of the best fishing methods ever. When you get the perfect spot like a fast flowing spillway, with the correct time of the day, you will get a bite every single cast and if done right, catch a fish every cast.
@ntsegmuag31444 жыл бұрын
Definitely for sure when your casting with your fly rod, try swift motions like the extension of your arm. In tight places, you can always feed little by little to keep you from having to whip your pole drastically

I loved the video and I would love to see even more fly-fishing content. A few fly-fishing tips for ya, make sure you check what kinds of flies would be working in the time of year. Typically stoneflies and prince nymphs aren't winter flies, and you will catch much bigger fish on the right flies.

Grats on your PB! To get better at casting, leave the spin gear at home, and google the roll cast. Also maybe look up nymph rig setups, looks like you may not have been fishing deep enough

Pain Weaver idk about you but I don’t click on videos for the title, I click for the content. He produces some pretty good content none the less.
