Haymitch did not only have to do extreme things to survive his games, in the following years (he won 24 years before these games) it was his job to mentor two tributes each year only to watch them die. So it is really hard to blame him for being distant and not very helpful at first. He is protecting himself by avoiding to get attached to the tributes. At this point he believes at least one has to die and it is likely they will die both.

Its easy to hate Cato for all he did. But once you sit back and realize... he is also a child. They were trained to mentally block out their humanity while in the game, but that doesn't mean it wouldnt affect them. In a later book, Annie who was a Victor from a district that trains for it, once she got home she had a total mental breakdown even though she also blocked her humanity during the games. They are trained as soldiers that's to go to war... but even fully grown soldiers suffer from ptsd and other things once they come home. These are ALL children, and they can not afford to bring compassion with them into the games.
@LippsReacts2 күн бұрын
so very well said and true. Compassion is a fault in this game
@DM-nw5luКүн бұрын
Also... who knows how far their training went? The 1st and 2nd district are the wealthiest and most loyal to the Capitol. They may have made these "volunteers" watch their own family die in simulations thousands of times, made them kill their own family in simulations, made them kill thousands of innocent strangers in simulations from age what? 5? 6? None of the kids in the arena are at fault. I did genuinely feel bad for Cato when I first read the scene of his death (I read the books before the movies were released. When I was 9 is when I read the first book... even back then I got it. It baffles me people who were adults at the time did not get it. Still just painted him a villian). "One more kill. It's the only thing I know how to do." is actually the line that made me tear up in the theatres when I watched it at age 13... It is really all the careers are taught to do... to kill. From a very young age.

Peeta loses his leg after the games, but that isn’t shown in the movie. It’s important to remember to think of his limits with a newly amputated leg in the following movie! They had to keep the impacts of the injury in for storylines purposes but because they cut the cause - many movie watchers thought he was clumsy or weak or that people were concerned about him for no real reason!
@justarandomveryintelligent89342 күн бұрын
The books are written from Katniss' first person POV. As such they give you WAY more insight into Katniss's thoughts and opinions than the movies do. In terms of her relationships with Gale and Peeta, what I can tell you now in terms of insight thats touched upon in the movie but given more depth in the book is that Katniss has no intention of having a family because she doesn't want to endure losing children to the games. She has a skewed view of what love is because when her father died her mother went into a catatonic state from the intensity of her grief. (briefly seen during Katniss' tracker jacker induced hallucinations in the movie.) Because their mother wasn't taking care of her daughters Katniss and Prim almost starved to death and Peeta giving Katniss that loaf of bread literally saved her and Prim's life. So during the first book Katniss sees love as a luxury she can't afford because of the Hunger Games and she also fears the loss of love because she almost starved to death because her mother lost her love. Also, because of her low self esteem she thinks she doesn't deserve love even if she by some miracle has the opportunity to find it. Gale is her childhood best friend so with him at this point its a matter of safety. By the end of the movie Peeta is the only person that completely understands her.

10:22 Every eligible kid (age 12 to 18) will have their named entered once every year in the Hunger Games raffle. Katniss have 20 entries coz she was 16yo and Prim was 12yo when the 74th Hunger Games happened. So she has 5 automatic entries while Prim has one then the five years Katniss entered her name for herself, Prim and their mom, total of 20 entries. That was the Capitol’s tesserae system which also makes the weak and already malnourished kids vulnerable to being reaped coz they have higher numbers of entries. Each eligible child can sign up for tesserae to receive a year’s meager supply of oil and grain for each of their family members. Gale has three younger siblings and a mother and was 18yo at the beginning of this movie, there were 5 of them. Gale have 7 automatic entries then the 7 years of putting his name in for tessera for the 5 members of his family (35+7=42). Katniss and Gale carries each of their families on their back while being hunting partners and watching each other’s back while hunting. That’s their dynamic since their dads died in the mine explosion (4 years before the beginning of this movie). They have a pact that since they enter their names so much, if one of them gets reaped, the other will provide food for the other’s family. Their district will have extra food supply from the Capitol for a year if their tribute wins. The victors will also be given monthly monetary compensation and a huge house in the Victor’s Village in their respective district. District 12 had 2, one is Haymitch from the 50th Hunger Games and the other weren’t mentioned much and presumably dead by this time and was the winner of the 10th Hunger Games.

The salute is used in District 12 for funerals. It means goodbye to someone you love, according to the books. You'll be pleased to here that there is a new director for the next three (and the prequel) and there is less shaky cam. It kind of sucks that Gary Ross, the director of the first movie made this successful movie and then didn't get to continue. I think he was trying to make it feel real, like we were in the woods with Katniss. But it can be a lot.

One scene in the books that I wish they’d included was District 11 sending Katniss a small loaf of bread. As a poor district, it was very expensive to send it… meant for Rue originally (Katniss speculated), but given to Katniss for her tender care & treatment of Rue. Districts did NOT support tributes from outside their own district. The Capitol kept people separated and encouraged rivalry. Katniss was simply acting true to her character, taking care of Rue, who reminded her of Prim. By putting the flowers around Rue’s body, preparing a sweet tribute to a girl way too young to die so terribly, Katniss showed all of Panem - the tragedy and unfairness of Rue’s needless death. When she lifted her hand in the 3-finger salute (a District 12 tradition) and District 11 copied it and rioted, President Snow immediately knew Katniss had become (unintentionally) a spark for rebellion. I’m looking forward to your reaction to the next 3 films.

@ The Capitol is a totalitarian regime and the Hunger Games are a gross consequence of the oppression they inflict upon the districts to control them. Snow embodies that evil. Also, there’s so much to consider when examining how/why people in the Capitol continue to support such monstrous “games” killing children. Rue’s death is one catalyst to radicalizing people in the story (and viewers like us). Since I know you’ve already watched it, I’m sure Catching Fire continued that radicalization. Suzanne Collins gave us a lot to ponder.

Keep in mind, Haymitch was the first person from District 12 in an incredibly, incredibly long time to win the Hunger Games. Canonically there's only one winner from District 12 before him, and since him, there have been no winners from District 12 because they're all so poor and malnourished that they don't really have time to prepare for the games, they're too busy trying to keep themselves and their families from starving. Love this reaction!! I’m on the edge of my seat for the next! One thing that I think is such an untouched part of the context of this is how divided and segregated the borders are between districts. There is NO casual crossing of district lines when you’re from there. It is regulated completely and most people will NEVER see another district in their lives. This creates a complete divide between the people which keeps them from uniting and rebelling against the capitol. It also means they have ZERO point of reference for how they’re living compared to other districts. They know what is taught in school, and the capital chooses what kind of information is known about each district. The only exception to this rule is District 6 -Transportation. The capitol, therefore, supplies this district and many transportation employees with morphling, a sedative drug, to keep them from being a threat with that kind of access. It’s such an important aspect of what these characters from different sides are going through, and really says a lot about the methodical planning of the capitol.
@M0rgan1sm17 сағат бұрын
Cato’s break down at the end before dying is really powerful. He is a child. People in the wealthier districts view the hunger games and an honor, glorify them their whole life, basically brainwashing them all into thinking that training their whole life to either kill many other kids or die trying is an honor. It’s not until they experience the games that they realize despite them having an advantage, it’s all for show. They’re still district, they are stuck in the same cycle as everyone else, but they don’t realize it until it’s too late. Honestly insane. The capitol has made the districts biggest enemy seem to be the other districts since they’re forced to watch as their children die at the hands of the children of other districts, completely taking attention away from how the capital put them in the position to do so
@Cameron50432 күн бұрын
So glad you're reacting to these! So...Peeta, Katniss, and Gale. To understand about Katniss, while Peeta has a major crush and Gale is falling for her, hard and fast, Katniss isn't particularly interested in either of them. After the death of her father, she, Prim, and their mother nearly died of starvation until Katniss began to put together how to hunt and manage in the woods to get them food. Katniss' mother mentally checked out and sank into a black depression and it fell totally on Katniss to save them all Gale is also in the woods trapping for food for his family - his father died in the same mine explosion that killed Katniss' dad - and they slowly team up over time to care for their families. But Katniss has zero interest in anything outside of survival. She states at the beginning of the movie, she is never having kids. She MEANS that. If you survive the reaping past your 18th birthday, your children will be in the reapings in the future. Between fighting to feed them, the trauma of the yearly reapings, her fear for her sister, Katniss has no other focus. She's not interested in romance, or either of the boys. The relationships do evolve over the movies, but thats where Katniss starts, and she remains pretty focussed on survival throughout. Looking forward to the rest of the Hunger Games reactions with you. thank you!

This was my favorite movie of the trilogy, because it played the most to the emotions and humanity (or lack of humanity) of the story. I could see that in your reaction too, particularly when Ru died. The second and third movies play more to the action, which seems to be the defining common denominator of modern movies. You'll enjoy the rest of the movies as well, but I'm sure you'll be coming back to this one as your favorite. Instead of dogs, the books had werewolf-like monsters that were based on the appearance of the various dead tributes (Rue, Thresh, the blonde career girl named Glimmer, the red head, etc). It’s never confirmed, but heavily implied that the Capitol reused the bodies of the dead tributes as the creatures. They were originally planned for the film (there was concept art), but I guess it might have been too expensive or difficult to explain for the audience.

One of the craziest parts for me is after Rue dies in the book, district 11 pulls all their money together to send a small loaf of bread only made in District 11 to the District 12 tribute as a thank you for katniss taking care of Rue. It’s shows the camaraderie of the districts growing as well as the vast price of the items that are sent. Also the mutts sent into the arena during the end in the book were genetically mutated from the bodies of the dead victors. So at one point she was fights a small one that she realized was a mutated Rue. When Cato died too, he was wearing this light armor, so when the mutts attacked he was basically being tortured to death, so he looks to Katniss and begs her to end his suffering. Which she does. Also the Capital is both a place and the ruling government (like Washington DC in a way) and the districts are spread out among North America.

The things that are implied but not really explained much: You can "buy" oil and grain in exchange for your name in the reaping ball. One ration of food for one person per name. So if you have a large family and no other way to get food, you have to enter your name in many times each year. Then, every time your name goes in, stays in. So if you enter your name once in year one, your name will be in twice the next year. If you "buy" food your name goes in for every ration, and then stays too. So that's how Gale got to 42 times. 6 or 7 times as the "normal" amount, plus every ration added up from the past years. Gale has several younger siblings, so that adds up. This means that the poorest and most malnourished kids and families are targeted more than any other group. A victor brings in a year's worth of food to their district as well, so districts that win more get more food, and the kids have to put their names in fewer times for survival. The hunger games are a punishment for the districts, but entertainment for the Capitol. The districts are forced to watch and participate, the Capitol only watches, bets, and gifts things. Those gifts are very expensive to give, so really rich people do that to have their favourite win, and presumably so they can cash in bet money too, and sometimes a district can pool all their money to send something. While the careers from the richer districts are better fed, equipped and trained, they're still victims of the capitol, raised to think that being in the games is a good thing, that volunteering themselves is going to earn them respect and status. They're still just kids being sent to their deaths. I've always assumed those districts raise and train tributes and more or less brainwash them into sacrificing themselves. That way all the other children of the district are safe. I wonder how the kids who become careers are picked in those districts, like, do they have a lottery like the reaping, or do they handpick them based on talent, or do they pick kids whose families gave them up, or are all the kids from the district trained and the best (least missed?) get sent to the games? Cato is the "villain" for Katniss, but he's still just a kid who was told that he should die for his district. Well, he was told he should win, but they know that those kids are still likely to die. Hating Cato (both as a viewer, and in the world) is kind of the goal too, the Capitol wants the districts divided, so if the districts hate the kids who were forced to kill each other instead of the Capitol who put them there in the first place, that makes it a lot easier to keep rebellions under control.

Haymitch as the only winner from dist. 12 had to be the mentor. Effie works for the capitol as a chaperone. Every year they get two new kids, just to watch them die. That is why they don't want to get to close to the tributes.

Katniss has never dated. She has no interest in boys. She views Gale as a hunting partner only. She has no idea the impact she has on others. She has been the sole provider for her family since she was 11 yo. She is emotionally shut down. So when Peeta acknowledges he has a crush on her all she can think of is girls at school who flirt and talk about boys, where her only focus has been on the care of her family. She is absolutely guileless. You may want to read or listen to the books which help readers develop a much better understanding of Katniss’ nature.

A few things.... first i liked your reaction and i was optimistic to see something different this time. However, i wasnt.... not completly... what do i mean? I have seen 100s of reactions to this movies and all of them follow the same path, the reactor starts "This system is messed up" or "How could that system work" and in the end like you said "Im here wishing for people to die!" This is how that system works for 74 years. You will pick a tribute over the games. 2 hours of film is all it takes....to cheer for kids killing kids.Thats the brilliant and scarry part of Suzanne Collins writting. In the end, everyone is capitol. You asked how they could "not take it litely" after the games. Haymitch won the 50th games, he won it, by using a trick. When Haymitch and his fellow district 12 tribute, a girl called Maysilee Donner sat next to te edge of the arena, He threw a rock into the distance and the forcefield rebounded the rock to its exact position, before he threw it. So Haymitch knew, there was a forcefied containing the arena. In te end, it was only him and a girl from disrict 2. She had cut his stomach with an axe and he ran to the end of the arena, at this point Haymitch littaraly was holding his gutts inside his stomach and collapsed in the moment, the girl threw her axe. She was waiting for the axe to hit him but the forcefield catapullted the axe into her head, making Haymitch the winner. Snow was furious because Haymitch had "shown their weakness" because the Capitol never intended the arena forcefield as a weapon. So while Haymitch was on emergency surgory, Snow executed his whole family and girlfriend as a reminder for all victors, never to mess with the capitol. One last thing, that bothers me every time. Its the Mockingjay Pin. The film altered its backstory and doing that, the whole first act, bcause the plot of the book is, Katniss wearing the pin openly. She didnt find it on the black market. It was given to her after the reaping. When she said her goodbyes, a girl called Madge Undersees, the mayors daughter and Katniss only friend in all of District 12 gave her the pin. It belonged to her aunt .... Maysilee Donner .... who was also the best friend of Katniss mom. Maysilee was reaped at age 16 and died, when she was attacked by a flog of mutated Flamingos. That pin was her token from District 12 and given to her sister, Madges mom, after Haymitch won. Madges mom since then lived a life of pain and depression. Now, the point why this is important is, every tribute is allowed a token from Home, it got examend over days and while Katniss was allowed to keep the pin, Glimmer, the District 1 girl, wasnt allowed to keep her ring, because it was found to contain poison. Also, putting on the oin in secret wouldnt work, because every tribute is weight, before beeing lifted into the arena and if the weight is incorrect, the plattform would explode. One year a girl dropped hers and these 2-3 gamms triggerd the BOOM. In the books you will aslo learn, that Snow hates Mockingjays because they remind him of an Capitol experiment gone wrong.

Basically, everyone 12-18 has to have one entry every year, and they're cumulative, so a twelve year old has one, and an 18 year old like Gale has 7, at the very minimum. In order to get grain and oil, you can put in an extra one each year. That includes one for yourself. So if you take two (one mandatory and one for grain and oil for yourself), then by 18, you have fourteen. Gale is also taking one for his mother, one for each of his three siblings, and one for his widowed mother. So he's adding five every year to his mandatory one--in other words, six a year for seven years. And yeah, Haymitch had a more horrific year than most, plus he's been watching kids die for twenty-three years by this point. (He's actually about forty; Harrelson is good, but about ten years too old for the part, and the blonde hair puts him in a different social stratum than he's in in the books, where the poorer people tend to be brunettes with gray eyes, and the slightly better off merchant class is largely blonde. That's one reason Katniss's mom is isolated--she's a merchant who married a miner, and probably didn't have many friends left for support on either side.) You get to live in the Capitol if you were born there. All twelve districts are essentially vassal states to it, tasked with providing a particular good. Districts one and Two (and Four, in the books) are close to the Capitol and essentially brain-washed by the propaganda. (Four is questionable in this, which is probably why the film omitted it.) The Capitol controls the economy absolutely, and keeps the districts poor. They destroyed one district entirely during the rebellion. For the sponsors, just imagine if the voters on something like "Dancing With the Stars" could provide the contests with things that will help them dance better (some people have great tap shoes and sparkly costumes, while the less-liked ones are dancing barefoot in sack cloth). And of course, it includes betting on the winner, so enthusiastic sponsors are hoping to make back the money. It's super expensive to sponsor, which is why Haymitch has to shmooze all the rich people, and can barely get more than a cup of soup after the medicine he sends Katniss. And yes, if you win, you get all kinds of money and nice house, and your district gets extra food for a year. Though if the Capitol is annoyed at you, that food could well arrive spoiled and full of bugs. Katniss credits Peeta with saving her life (and, essentially, her soul) with that bread, and by inspiring her indirectly to start supporting her family from the land. (I always assumed that he joined the Careers in order to get the bow away from Glimmer. Also, probably because it was a question of "join us or get killed by us." The books aren't clear.)

So one thing the movies didn’t do a great job at conveying is the fact that Katniss doesn’t have any romantic interests in either of the guys. Gale has an obvious crush on her and she even acknowledges that people in district 12 consider them a couple because of the history and similarities they have. But her narration states that she simply did not have time to consider romance or love as a priority, considering the fact that she had her family to take care of.

That was nice (well, as nice as a reaction of this movie can get, I guess), and I can't wait for the next part. This story resonated with me ever since I read the first book. The gritty environment drew me in, while I stayed for the characters and their stories. What really got me about your reaction was that, finally, I didn't cry alone when Prim gets picked and Rue dies. There's so much I would like to say, but I'm not that good in translating my thoughts in English, so I just want to tell you that I appreciate this video and will subscribe for more. ♥

Interesting reaction waiting for your next one. The actors were a bit older than their parts. Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) was the closest to his character's age at 18 and the most experienced as a child actor starting at age 9. Jennifer Lawrence was 20 and Liam Hemsworth was 21. Becoming an alcoholic or a drug addict would be a common self medicating response to surviving the games.

Haymich was truly traumatized by his experience in the games. He was the winner of the 50th Hunger Games. The Games of every quarter century are according to the books what is called a quarter-quell so the games of each quarter-quell are of special significance with special rules. In the 50th Hunger Games twice the normal number of tributes were reaped. That means there were 48 tributes went to the games. Plus according to the books Haymich found out something that he shouldn't have that allowed him yo win. This made the leader of the country who you'll see shortly angry. So angry in fact that he had Haymich's whole family murdered.

@@LippsReacts Yup! And that is exactly why he said "they don't take these things lightly", to Katniss after she pulled the berry stunt. He is worried for the saftey of Katniss, Prim, and her mom. Potentially even Gale if President Snow discovers they have a sort of "thing" going on.

Laissez-faire? It is a French phrase that means "let them do it" or "allow to do". Blasé is an adjective that means someone is bored with life's pleasures, or is apathetic to excitement or pleasure. Synonyms of blasé include jaded, apathetic, and world-weary.

The Games are sort of the event of the year for the people of the Capitol. Think about it, a plot line with a large cast of characters (the tributes), in a hostile environment (the arena), with all sort of excitement (the natural disasters and engineered monsters, also known as muttations)

I respectfully disagree. I suggest (to everyone I know) that reading the books should follow seeing the movie. One watches the movie, it's awesome with the visuals and such, but one is left with questions. Then when the books are read, many of the questions are answered and the story's world gets thicker and richer. Or you could read the books and then be disappointed when the movie doesn't measure up. Just how I think about it.

Peeta was actually doing everything so she’d survive, he was actually leading them away from her. 🥹 in the memory of him giving her the bread. The backstory is her dad had died not too long before, mom went into deep depression and she and her sister were literally a day from dying from starvation. Peeta saw her and burnt the bread on purpose so he could sneak it to her, knowing well he’d get a beating. His feelings for her were always real. It’s been awhile but I think they were both 12 at the time. The capital is separate from the districts, it’s we’re the wealthy are, no kids from there go into the games and they are manipulated since forever to think these games are okay, Effie the woman with them at the beginning who chooses the names from the bowl, she’s from the capital and she’s assigned to district 12 specifically. She’s just been brainwashed her whole,life to think things are like this. Also in this world they keep districts separate so the games always make them out to be enemies, but Katniss showed such care, and empathy especially by giving her a sort of proper burial that it started a spark of rebellion, showing districts can be other then enemies.

The patriotic song you hear throughout the events before and during the Game is the national anthem “Horn of Plenty”. It’s pretty much just propaganda that celebrates the Capitol and the Games for bringing unity after the rebellion

Panem (the fictional country) is the official successor to the United States. The books mention in passing that old world fell in natural disasters (likely climate change) and civil war, with the Capitol emerging as the closest thing to a legitimate authority, having total control of the 13 districts, who produce all resources. Eventually the districts rebelled against the Capitol in a brutal civil war called the dark days, in which both sides committed atrocities, and the Capitol eventually managed to win. District 13, the hub of weapons development, was destroyed and the Hunger Games were installed as a reminder for the other districts because of the treason. Also all districts are not treated equal. The districts with the career-tributes have closer ties to the Capitol, enjoying a higher standard of living. District 2, the home of Cato, is also the de-facto military hub for the Capitol. Most of the Peacekeepers (the soldiers in white) are actually come from there and not the Capitol

Yeah so the thing about the amount of times your names in there it's in there once at 12 twice at 13 and so on but also if you've taken food from the capital for having your name in an extra time once it's cumulative so if you did it once at 12:00 it would be your name in twice then 4 * the next year unless you ask to have extra food again and you don't do that just for you you do that for other members of your family so Gail has multiple little brothers I believe he even has a little sister named Posey at least in the books he did As for Senna everybody loves him and the main thing about him being a guy who grew up in the Capitol he is not anywhere near as fancy as the rest of them he's basically a normal guy he's just super stylish and the only thing that sets him apart from a guy from the district is he's clearly not poor he he just has a little gold eyeliner he doesn't look all made up like a clown in fact katniss said his assistants she basically says she sees them not really as people but as exotic birds play Santa is a real one and by the way in the books he's not like old enough to be katniss's dad he is barely in his twenties he's like a college-age kid
