One thing so many games miss when they try to emulate Chrono Trigger is the AMAZING pacing of the game. There is really no wasted time in the game, battles move fast while letting you do cool things. Scenes move fast but not so fast that you don’t get to enjoy time with the characters. Not sure how they did it, but it’s one of the most well-paced games ever made. So many JRPGs fail in this aspect!

Yes, yes, and yes! There was a short period of time when Square was the king of pacing, and then FFVIII came out, and they forever forgot that pacing helps pull you in. Cough, cough FFVII remake. FF6, Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics, FF7 and Parasyte Eve all had great pacing.

This is a really good point. When replaying Chrono Trigger, there aren't any plot points I really dread except for the grindy stuff added in the DS version that is also ignorable. I usually just do the black omen and all the non DS sidequests like the original SNES version.

thats called a vissionary, yes back then you had creators that actualy cared about the story of their works of art. There was someone always at the top with a ambitious idea and vision behind their product. Now a days these indie developers are just trying to replicate classic nostalgia but with abysmal elementary school writing. It could never compare to the likes of such maserpieces as chrono trigger or FF VI. Maybe one day we will be proved wrong, but so far i have not been impressed.

Sorry not so sure about that. I’m playing it right now for the first time and I have spent hour wandering around uselessly because I must have missed some dialog that said what I was supposed to do so the pacing for me is slow. But that’s just my 2 cents, I’m sure for others it’s fine.

I just beat Chrono Trigger for the first time this year. I am a few years behind. The hype is real! It is one of the greatest games I have ever played, and I played it in 2024.

Check out FF6 pixel remaster from the same time period if you haven’t already. The random battles haven’t aged well, it’s not as perfectly paced as CT, but it’s another giant from the same time and I slightly prefer the characters, plot and music. Its’s been voted highly in the top Final fantasy rankings for 30 years which says something for its enduring quality like CT.

Oh I just saw this game this week, what I loved about it (besides this literally being Chrono trigger on a LOT of things) is how pretty the pixel art is. It reminds me of Octopath Traveler, I like the pixel art way more than the hand drawn scenes.

I have been so swamped with anxiety inducing political news that I literally forgot that I can just watch something else. Lo and behold, your channel pops back into my feed and now you've helped me chill out for a bit here at work. Thank you! I appreciate your commentary and your videos! To answer your question: I'm always willing to try out any game that is aspiring to become a new Chrono Trigger for this generation. CT is in my top 5 fav games of all time, and coupled with nostalgia, I doubt I'll find anything that will beat it in my book. That doesn't mean I'm not excited about Threads of Fate and what it might bring to the table. Definitely going to wishlist it

Gotta nitpick for a sec, because Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time and I just went through it again a few weeks ago. Robo WAS in the campfire scene, because it takes place immediately after retrieving him from Fiona's Shrine. He even has most of the dialogue in that scene Either way, this game looks beautiful, and I hope it lives up to its potential. I also hope it comes to PS5, because I'd rather play it there than on PC

We really do need a new Breath of Fire as you said, or at least a great spiritual successor from an indie developer like this one. I have a feeling Capcom won't bring the series back. They won't even let a third party developer remake the games.

The gaming community just needs to stop pining for and comparing everything to Chrono Trigger. It only ever hurts the game's reputation for a nostalgic standard set in a time where games had limitations. For today's standard, games need to understand pacing, impact, engagement, and intuitiveness. I really hope this game does well, it looks beautiful. By the trailer alone it checks all my boxes.

Yep I added this to my wishlist the second I saw it. Seems to be closest Chrono trigger game I've seen, mixed with the best 2d and 2.5d aspects. I do hope cinematic combat isn't like the duals in Eyuiden Chronicles where it was a step back and just a predetermined short movie. Unrelated, curious if you've also checked out Bloomtown.

I quite literally just finished replaying Chrono Trigger last weekend because I needed a comfort game and wow does it still hold up Will there ever be another Chrono Trigger one to one? No, but do I love games that take inspiration from it and carry a bit of its spirit on? Yup! Sea of Stars, even I am Setsuna I would put in that camp - so this is by far, bar none, 100% my favorite announcement out of TGS this year!

When I saw it I instantly wishlist it. Played C. Trigger a few years for the first time with zero nostalgia and fell in love with it. Also I went thru a similar journey with games that promised a similar feeling but end up being their own thing. Let's see how this one plays out!

I’m pretty confused why they’d choose Xbox and forego PS5 and Switch which have sold much better in Japan, and have way more RPG gamers. People don’t buy Xboxes for RPGs. They buy them for COD and first person shooters. Hopefully it’ll be a delayed announcement that it’s coming to PS5 and Switch.

On one hand, part of the reason Chrono Trigger was so good was the once-in-a-lifetime dream team that was assembled to make it. I don't think expect this game to really match that. On the other. Hand, I was super excited to see the ad for this and realize that it didn't seem to be yet another Gacha Game.

Based on the images and preview videos, this does look like a spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger, so I wishlisted it without hesitation. However, whether I pre-order it when that becomes available may depend on the pricing and whether they release a demo ahead of the full release.

Nice! Since completing Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars and Rise of the Third Power, I've been waiting for the next game like this. The RPG Maker ones often just don't stack up, altho Bloomtown looks close. I don't need it to resemble Chrono Trigger, just any of the 16/32 bit classics. Any know of any coming up I'm missing?

Looking forward to this one. I’d be interested to hear more about how you feel Sea of Stars fell short of Chrono Trigger because to me it’s the closest out of the previous games you talked about - even though I have some criticisms of it. I tried to get into Chain of Echoes couple times when it was on Game Pass but never got more than a couple hours in before losing interest because of the combat, writing and character art style - though I plan to give a third try at some point. With Sea of Stars, I liked the writing, battle system (except the lack of a proper accessibility option without timed presses), pixel art (some of the very best in any JRPG of the last decade), music, etc. The only things that really annoyed me were the way the “optional” aspects were handled in regards to the ending, the mandatory shmup section (again, an accessibility concern - because shmups are one of the genres I play most other than JRPGs but I like turn-based games when I’m resting my wrists from shmups), the parrot implementation (there’s no reason it couldn’t tell you all the information for an area at once instead of using RnG to give you one piece) and the lack of any sort of area maps (which would have really helped with those rainbow items).

There are itch scratchers but not like those original games it was based off, eiyuden comes to mind to scratch the suikoden, and it did but felt something missing but they have a great base for the second game. Also capcom did dissapoint in the TGS being a monster hunter panel and no breath of fire collection or remake

I just want to second a desire for more Breath of Fire. Tears of Magic tried to fill that void but the kickstarter failed. Threads of Time can't hope to measure up to Chrono Trigger but taking inspiration can get good results.

I think my biggest concern based on the teaser trailer is that the game is just trying to practically copy Chrono Trigger stuff, as opposed to being heavily influenced by it. Riding on pterodactyls (or pteranodons?) is so on-the-nose that it feels like it's lacking sufficient identity of its own. It's too early to tell anything at all right now, of course, but the extreme reliance on CT "member berries" is impossible not to notice if you're a CT fan. Fingers crossed that this is great because I'd love a new CT-like game that's done well.

Looks neat, but I’m kinda wary these days whenever someone says their game is like Chrono Trigger. Both because it could be a cynical nostalgia-bait thing, but also because while Chrono Trigger is a great game and there are certainly things from it I’d like to see more often, you still have to do your own thing at the end of the day. It can’t just be Chrono Trigger.

Companies severely underestimate story writing and actually creating that immersion where the world feels more real. Characters used to have a wide range of emotions based on who they were and how they would react to certain scenarios. Now it's as if writing has been watered down to characters basically having 2 functions each: yelling when mad and then acting as if they are going to do XYZ no matter what. I miss the personality that older games used to breathe into their characters especially the NPCs.

The dark-haired warrior and the mage kinda remind me of Steiner and Vivi's sword magic attacks. Those anime-to-pixelart (and vice-versa) transitions are amazing, hopefully they are not just for the trailer, but they're also in the actual game, during combat and story events. Definitely on my watchlist.
