My dad spent his whole life thinking he sucked at chess. He would play with his best friend at university and a mutual friend and lost constantly. Turns out the mutual friend was Milner-Barry's son.

@31:00 here's a fun bullet game that continues this line: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. Nf3 Qb6 6. Bd3 cxd4 7. cxd4 Bd7 8. O-O Nxd4 9. Nxd4 Qxd4 10. Nc3 a6 11. Qe2 Ne7 12. Kh1 Nc6 13. f4 Nb4 14. Rd1 Nxd3 15. Rxd3 Qc4 16. Bd2 b5 17. a3 Be7 18. f5 Rc8 19. Rf1 d4 20. Ne4 exf5 21. Nd6+ Bxd6 22. exd6+ Be6 23. Bf4 O-O 24. Qf3 Bd5 25. Qg3 Be4 26. Rd2 Qxf1# 0-1 The black queen calmly rests on C4 while white carries out the kingside attack.
@ivantreskin58563 жыл бұрын
Interesting fact: according to the database, the last time any master took the second pawn was in 2007. Since then not once in 13 years. I've played this position recently as a black but my opponent didn't recapture the pawn on d4 and just castled which creates another completely separate branch of possibilities.
@alexrandall85572 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the rapid castles variation and baiting the capture on c3 where White follows up with a Nxc3 and an early Bd3, kicking the queen away, is very strong and the engine actually likes it for White. Definitely an improvement on the older version
@Julez1084 ай бұрын
Clearly castling creates a split in the Milner-Barry timeline. Something to investigate deeply.

Hey Guys and Jonathan Schrantz, I like the Milner Barry Gambit and i would like to put in my repertoire but i actually dont know if there is theory after 1.e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. Nf3 Qb6 6. Bd3 cxd4 7. cxd4 Bd7 8. 0-0 Nxd4 9. Nxd4 Qxd4 10. Nc3 Qxe5 11. Re1 Qd6 12. Nb5 Db6! Can Black just force a draw if he plays likes this (because the only games who where correctly played were draws by repetition with white playing Be3 and Bd2), if that is the case than I think there is one less reason playing the opening ( when im white I of course want to play for a win, but if black can force the draw in 12 moves .... I mean why should i play this ??) Hopefully sombody can answer my question and would like to know if im wrong and there is theory

Yes, after 12... Qb6, white should accept the draw by repetition. You could maybe try 13. Be3 Qa5 14. Nd4? -/+ but that is a desperate attempt. If you play for a win against a prepared opponent who is happy with a draw, don't play the Milner-Barry main line, but either something totally different (maybe the exchange variation, which is sometimes considered drawish, but can be played for a win - especially against weaker opponents, as it usually favours the stronger player), or maybe 9. Nbd2 (I don't know much about this line, but IM Andras Toth recommends it). 10. Qe2 instead of Nc3 should also be playable.

At the end, when white plays R-H3, R-F6 first seems clearer. If ... R x R (F6), then E-F6, R-E1(ch); B-G1 and there is no defense to the mate on G7. If Black doesn't capture on F6, then R-H3 and it's all over.

I used to play this gambit as White, and while after ...Qxe5, I had great success with Qd1-f3!? (rather than the crude Rf1-e1), I found the line with ...a6 impossible to meet. After Qe2 Ne7 Kh1 Nc6 f4, instead of Nb4?!, as in the Sveshnikov-Razuvaev game, simply Bf8-c5 leaves Black a clear pawn up for nothing.
@svendsocht6812 Жыл бұрын
After 13... Bc5, instead of Nb4!, white plays a3. Then, Nb4 will not be possible soon, Na5 is answered by b4, and white can go Nd1 and Be3, or maybe even Bd2-e1-f2. Probably best for black is 13... Nb4 14. Rd1 Bc5! 15. Bxa6 Qf2 =+

I have played the black side of this over the decades & have a plus score... That aside, it can be very dangerous in the hands of strong attacking player... I have seen most players, who have played it against me sidestep it, by playing French exchange, against me & play it against others... I like it as white & will play the gambit when given the chance...

Hey Jonathan, I think the gambit looks reasonable, but with accurate play it seems like White cannot really prove any big advantage. Black might have to give up the pawns he gained but that will cost White a lot of time so Black might be able to develop and get his King to safety. Also, could you perhaps do a lecture for the Black pieces on the Modern Scandinavian 1.e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 ? I would personally love to see the Icelandic gambit (3. c4 e6 4. dxe6) in particular!

@iamthere1357 жыл бұрын
srincrivel1 It's not considered good because you've built up on D4 so are releasing the tension. okay in some lines but your queen blocks the b5 pawn and c4 is usually played in whites pawn a3 lines. So you are releasing the tension and Queen is misplaced

If your organization wants to implement the next true evolution of chess, it must embrace the idea of human swarm intelligence vs. AI. This is the next front of Chess as an art. PvP and PvC has been addressed in monotony. We have seen every variation. The reason that MG is the greatest GM ever is because he addresses his problems through computational recollection and computational brutality. The next evolution of chess relies on the SvA (Swarm vs. AI) concept. Figure out how to implement that in a sociological setting.
