One of the things I like about Billy Joel's music is that he is not afraid to use minimal instruments.- just a few here and there. He doesn't fill every square inch of a track with noise. He creates a nice balance and contrast. You can also understand every word he sings.

My dad loved billy joel. He just passed away a few days ago. These songs bring me back to my childhood going for rides in the car with him.
@kiernanhowell-mackinley17339 жыл бұрын
The song is a cynical look at the music industry as a publicist/manager begs the protagonist to remain hip for the younger crowd ("What's the matter with the car I'm driving? / "Can't you tell that it's out of style?"), and the protagonist's refusal to change, claiming his music will remain relevant regardless of his appearance. The song was a reaction by Joel at the new music genres that were around in the late 1970s (punk, funk, new wave). It was inspired by Joel reading a review about a particular (unnamed) band, and realizing that he had no idea what their music sounded like.

Billy Joel got IRONY better than any musician ever. A new wave pop song called It's Still Rock and Roll with a Jazz Solo. Genius, it works on so many levels. Than a misogynist wet dream with a female put-down record called "She's always a woman" sung as a love song. Billy always knows what he's doing. He even wrote a song called "My last song" and it was his Last song. Who says they're going to retire from song writing and then really do it..who does he think he is? Keep doing what you do William.

A great song with spot-on commentary about the old- fashionedness and triteness of the late '70s--early '80s New Wave and Punk, this reflects how I was feeling about a lot of it at the time (when I entered college!), though Talking Heads, the B-52s and The Police were very original in retrospect. Just heard this song in a water aerobics class ages 55+..man it brings back nice memories. Being a teen Is hard but it’s plenty more enjoyable if you don’t care about the new trends or looking cool like this tune suggests!

I was listening to this in my friends car so I had to look it up. Glad I did. This sums up first world problems in 3 minutes.

I'm 10 and I love this song ever since my mom had me listen to it! I am that one weird kid that likes all the 60s 70s 80s and 90s songs, though. That's when there was good music.

I agree with you. I am around your age, and I listen to a lot of that music, but hate modern music. Do not become arrogant if other people disagree with your beliefs, however.

Haha I'd always been "that" friend... Still am that type of guy that's not "with" the new type of music... Rock on, kid

Hey, don't be ashamed. I'm 18, and I can't stand modern music! That's why I listen to a combination of: Christian metal, CCM, 80's rock, late 70's rock, some movie music, some classical music, and a little bit of Dragonforce, because, I just enjoy the speed of the music.

Will everyone stop criticizing 13 year olds for liking this song? I'm seeing more comments yelling at kids than kids actually commenting. Act like adults, will you? Because right now you're acting a lot more like a child who thinks they're superior. Huh.

The lyrics are some of the best in Joel's catalog and in general. The reference to Beau Brummell is crazy good!
