agreed!!!! I love both movies myself, but I tend to favor "Leviathan" a little bit more, and that's due to having both RoboCop himself in the movie, as well as the late-great Stan Winston's brilliant creature effects, as well as Jerry Goldsmith's great score.

This and 'Underwater' are similar IMO. There's a good movie somewhere in both of them, it just doesn't fully come together and both suffer from being about 90min. They both have a great cast and crew as well.

I’m a sucker for a goofy monster movie like this given you put Peter Welles, Ernie Hudson, Hector Elizondo and Daniel Stern with a Stan Winston creation. Yes it’s incredibly silly, but it’s a fun ride

'Leviathan' had everything but James Cameron. What he did with 'The Abyss' just made this film look cheap but it's nobody's fault. Still has a great cast and a solid enough premise to be enjoyed.

I always thought the 'underwater' scenes were pretty good. The floating particles is definitely what sells the dry-for-wet effect. Them Cosmatos' son would go off to really make some truly awesome batshit crazy movies heh.

HAH! Same! We never got to rent horror flicks as kids. BUT, many many moons later, well into the dawn of blu-rays, there was a movie rental place near us that was not only still open, but had a FANTASTIC collection of VHS tapes. You could rent 5 of them for $5 for 5 days. So we actually bought a VHS player off ebay and rented all the VHS movies we remembered passing at the store as kids, but were never allowed to rent. It was an EPIC several months of cheesy (often awesome) horror schlock! Lots of Full Moon flicks. lol. It was amazing seeing all of those for the first time.

If this had done well, they could have easily made a sequel called "Leviathans." They already established that pieces of the monster can grow and transform into a new one, and they did blow it up to defeat it. As such, there are now multiple chunks that can become new leviathans, thus making a sequel where the characters have to face a large number of them.

Honestly thought Deep Star 6 would be on the seafood menu. Leviathan was a nice surprise. I firmly believe that Deep Rising merits the Sick Flicks experience it's a delightful bloody mess. Winston is definitely sorely missed. I remember when Rick Baker was the "effects guy" but then Winston's work just seemed next level. Thanks again Mike.

Ernie Hudson got his "death bonus" on this one. If you didn't know in all of his contracts there is a clause where if his character dies he gets paid extra. He did this to avoid getting roles where the black character dies first.

Thank you for reviewing this movie @The Horror Geek! This movie scared the ever-loving shit out of me as a kid when I watched it in 1996 on TBS- so much that I slammed my bedroom door in my Mom's face when I confused her for the monster (yeah I was that spooked). Then I saw it 5 years later after having watched the Thing and Alien & Aliens and was far less scared, but impressed with Stan Winston's effects! I have a soft spot for the movie as well and bought the Scream Factory version. Is the Kino Lorber blu ray any good?

(To the tune of “How Deep is Your Love” by Bee Gees) 🎵 I can’t see your eyes or anything else this far from the sun And now we have to deal with a hurricane And best you don’t wander too far from we Because how the heck down here are we gonna find you again? And you come to me when we’re below this many degrees Hard to keep warm down here, below all seven seas Do you really think Nessie’s gonna show? How deep is your trench? How deeply we’re drenched How Deep is your trench? I really mean to know Cause going where we can’t breathe some might say we’re fools So Making it down and back up is kinda important for we And genetically engineered sea monsters make that harder for you and me How Deep is your Trench? Considering this film came out a couple of years after 'Robocop', it would be funny if they put Peter Weller in a diving suit intended to look robotic. "Dead or alive, we got Weller so we are DEFINITELY doing references!" Failing that, have it implied he was Buckeroo Banzai on an adventure and forgot to bring Jeff Goldblum along.

I get this string of underwater monster movies confused - but I love them all!! Love that multiple killer sharks just happened to be there with a creature that apparently can surface immediately from a great depth without any consequences (cue sad dead blob fish). Even Godzilla took his time, and scared off any man eating fish! Just great, silly but I adore it (and the abyss, deep star rising, sphere etc). Thanks, Mike, I’m thinking of doing a movie night with this, plus Underwater now. Time for a rewatch!
