@@DanBeckerYeah, the basic victorinox swiss army knife has scissors, a toothpick, a knife, tweezers, a file and a nail cleaner, plus for backpacking it weighs less, is smaller and costs less. Come on now, let’s be reasonable here. But yeah, the knives shown in this video are still mega cool!

Victorinox knives are on top for a reason - showing and reviewing new knives is cool, but its time to stop telling people to replace perfectly good gear for no reason. Victorinox knives are built to last a lifetime and many have outlasted their owners. Its ok to have good, old things.

if you don't HAVE a victorinox knife, in fact if the only knives you have are kitchen knives, you really want to look at stuff like this before you buy anything. also some teenagers or young adults may want to buy one of these knives for THEIR lifetime.
@jamiejfowler2 ай бұрын
@@dagnolia6004Yes that's true, and my comment mentioned that showing and reviewing new knives is good on its own. My objection is to the premise that we have to REPLACE these "obsolete" knives, which are anything but obsolete. A knife is a knife; if it cuts what you need it to cut, it's not obsolete.

I think the thing that I've used the most on my backpacking knife is the tweezers. I've pulled plenty of ticks off of skin, clothing and gear with them. The second most used thing is the scissors. Sometimes threads come loose and it's easiest to snip them short with scissors. Sometimes I use the toothpick, but I usually camp with some floss in my kit. I almost never use the actual knife. So no, none of these are a worth a spot in my backpack. Fun video though.

I’m going to respectfully disagree. Opinels are super cool. But they’re no good for one-handed operation. Simple, yes. But once you go one handed, you can’t go back to two hands.

And just a quick tip : if the locking ring is too tight, let the knife handle rest in a dry environment. And if it's too loose, just soak it in water or in a humid environment. The handle is made of beechwood which is very sensitive to ambiant humidity.

I say this as a big fan of Ben's and Knafs: I feel like this video was just an ad for Knafs. Don't really know why you are comparing a multitool with single-purpose knives. The only comparable knife from Ben is the Sendy, and even then it only competes with its scale tweezers/toothpick. The fact that the classic SAK is over a century old and STILL is one of the best selling multitools today is amazing and really shows that it is hard to compete with it.

A box store knife is fine since some backpackers don't even carry a knife. It should be a steel that works with a fire starting stick preferably with the firestarter incorporated into it. Call me old fashioned (or just finnish), but i will always take my traditional finnish "puukko" knife, if u don't know, search it up. Every multitool and pocket knife i've ever used, has always broke on me, except for my puukko that i've had for 18 years and the victorinox classic sd, and the knives that broke weren't cheap. Remember that this is just my personal preference, but the rugged blade from the puukko, and the delicate blade, scissors and tweezers of the classic sd is the perfect combo for me.

Honestly I am rather confused by this video, and why you specifically called out the much beloved SAK models (particularly the grooming oriented Classic SD), call them obsolete, and then completely fail to offer any real competition to a what a SAK is what so ever. Not trying to knock the Knafs shown, they are nice knives, and I appreciated their creator's mindset to right to repair and customization. But why on earth would you functionally set him up to fail, by making such an obviously false comparison. You would have been so much better off not making the comparison at all and just showing us some cool knives.

Who would just take a Victorinox classic hiking or camping? Always have a fixed blade and a folder at least. I will always have a fixed blade, a folder and a SAK. As for Victorinox SAK's. They are insanely versatile. All the tools on a SAK can do a hell of a lot more than what their descriptions say. Victorinox has nothing to worry about. Unmatched overall quality, elegance, practicality, versitility and much more. Victorinox has a business model that just works. They have been around for 140 years; they will likely be around far beyond 140 more. They try different things from time to time; some have been a success, and many, not. Yes, some uncommon features would be nice to have on a SAK, but then it would take away from the hobbyist modders and the customizing businesses. Victorinox is not going to listen to the wants or wishes of a few people unless; Victorinox finds that their idea will be useful, appealing and reasonably affordable to the masses; as well as, turn a reasonable profit. Over the last few years I see so many people whining and complaining about Victorinox because of: the steel, the scales, the corkscrew, the can opener, the small blade, the big blade, the awl, the package hook, the scissors, and everything else... Take away everything that the Knife Snobs, Brand specific Fan Boys or the Tacti-cool EDC guys complain about with a Victorinox.... Then add what they want... And what do you have left? The answer is an overpriced single blade flipper.
