I started my dream last year. I built a barn by myself. Milled the trees from the property. Purchased 2 beef cows and 3 sheep. Already had 20 chickens. Purchasing 6 pig's this year. I still work a 40 hour a week job but will be full time farming in 5 years and will be the happiest since my daughter was born 23 years ago

@@Homesteadyshow we will definitely be going on that journey w you guy's. We aquired our farm through contract for deed (still good people out there); and we NEED to build a new home ourselves too, and want want it to be off grid as well. But this spring it wasn't financially in the cards for us, and spiritual warfare had a part as well. Hopefully our small channel (1.68K subs) will take off, and this spring we can get started right w you guy's. I left my nursing career b4 the coof started.....2 of our 3 kids have been dx w autism and lupus following certain childhood interventions.....that we are not allowed to speak of.....and I intend on bringing more content on how to maintain health holistically, and identifying wild plants to do this. This winter (since things are slower in ND) we intend on doing a series of videos....on how "science" proves God, and referencing scripture in the process. I tutored Chemistry and Anatomy in nursing school, and it's my niche....hope it helps bring more people to Christ. Be the Light in the Darkness is what I usually say. I’m so very happy for you! I also had a dream to build a cabin and go off grid! We got the shell of my cabin done. Then….. my husband got sick. I had to become his full-time care-giver and the cabin got put on the back burner. It’s been 8 yrs. The empty cabin is still sitting and just getting weathered. My dream is gone and the cabin, sitting empty and unfinished, is a sad reminder of my long lost dream. I have my own health issues now also. Probably from all the years of stress and worry caring for my husband, so I’m not able to make my dream a reality. I am glad you haven’t given up on your dream and are going for it! I look forward to following your journey!

We did it. We built our home from scratch in the woods of NYS. We literally drove home from the closing on fumes because we paid for the property with every penny we had to not be in debt. We lived in one small room. Literally sleeping on air mattresses in the kitchen while we built onto our house as we were able. Craigslist free finds were a staple. We didn’t have to buy much materials. And 8 yrs later we are still working on it. We are 100% off grid. No power or wires of any kind come up here at all. So we had no choice but to be off grid. It’s been an amazing journey. And we are raising our family and our food here in the forest. 🤗

Been watching you guys for a few years, what seemed overwhelming and impossible as a single mom became a reality end of July. Each video bolstered mine (and I’m assuming many others) courage to think… maybe I can do this too? Well here I am sitting on forty acres completely off grid with my three youngest still at home. First three weeks was the hardest. Now every challenge/problem that we overcome, just boosts our confidence that we can do this! I am starting with a skoolie and soft sided barn. We will build our own home with our own hands too:) either earthbag or cordwood or a combination of both! Thank you so much for putting yourselves out there. You have been and will continue to be I’m sure a huge help in being inspired and learning practical things on running a family homestead:) Best of wishes in pursuing your family goals and dreams. Well this just made me cry tears of hope. I'm on a 7 acre property in South East CT. I've been here with my husband and kids for 11 yrs renting. During that time we had a deal with the land owner regarding the eventual purchase of the property and permission to begin to farm, which we did for 5 years until we realized We were the only ones upholding our end of the deal and The landowner abandoned responsibility. Long story short, The landowner filed bankruptcy and included the house. It is currently bank owned and we have a lease through May, but we are praying that we can see our dream realized through the purchase of this property. We've always dreamed of owning this place. It's not a cut and dry situation, but I believe in miracles. I birthed the youngest 2 of my 7 kids here. I miss my animals and my big garden. I'm believing that I'll be picking up where I left off here instead of relocating to another state where land and a home are affordable. If we can get this place... We can afford to stay in CT! Thank you both for the encouragement this morning.b

The thing is.....most of us don't have parents with 100 acre farms they will let us live on and manage while learning how to manage a farm. Most of us don't have 4 grandparents to build us a cabin. What has taken you 5 years, will take us 20 because we have no one to help us. Don't forget to count those blessings and thank God for them every day.

I had a friend a couple decades ago that had a couple friends who were Greek LEGAL immigrants who fought in World War II. Those Greek Brothers told me that there was no such thing as a mortgage in Greece when they were growing up in it. One year they would build a bedroom and a kitchen. The next year maybe another bedroom. The next year maybe a den and a garage. Then in 2 years maybe another bedroom and a living room. That is the way it was done. He also said there were no property taxes back then. You could never lose your home or land due to non-payment or inability to pay property taxes.

Why don't you cut your own logs and build a log cabin? If I were still young like you guys are I would still be on my homestead. I miss milking and raising my own pork and beef. I still have a garden and chickens, but it's a small space. The Lord has been so good to me. I grew up with my mom cooking winter and summer on a wood stove. There wasn't even a fan in our house, much less air conditioning. We had a shallow well and drew the water with a bucket, rope and tickle. Washed our clothes by hand in #2 wash tubs. I'm one of 11 children, so there was always a lot of laundry. Watching you guys sure takes me back to a much simpler time. Off grid isn't for everyone, and honestly I don't want to go back to that at my age. As long as I have control of most of the food I consume I feel like I'm better off than many people. I hope the best for y'all and I'm excited to follow your success. It's not going to be easy, but I'm confident you can do it. Home school your children so they don't get brain washed in public schools.

I have a couple suggestions for you. Watch tiny shiny homestead on KZbin. They are off grid but they did a whole solar system and they broke it down. Lumnah acres. It's on KZbin too and they did Total a total off grid too. But they're buildings are a little bit more conventional. Gerg Judy regenerative ranch. He has a lot out there but it's mostly about pastors and not putting your animals in barn. And the last one is homesteading family. They're kind of good kind of not off grid but they have a lot of good information on not relying on the outside world. This might be a lot to go through but you can kind of get to where you want they have everything. I don't know if you're staying in Pennsylvania or moving I didn't see where you said good luck hope you make it I'll be watching.

My father in law escaped Eastern Germany in the 60’s with $19 dollars in his pocket. Worked on the rigs in Northern Canada, taught himself English and put himself through Medical school. He then bought land. Through everything he learned in Germany, being self-sufficient was critical. My dear father in law is now on palliative care for cancer and his wish is for the farm to stay in the family. We are honouring his final wish. I’m a suburban girl through and through and my in my early 50’s, I’m starting a new chapter as a farm girl. I’m cramming as much info as humanly possible into a short time and draw from peoples positive experiences. I plan to start just with gardening and maybe a freeze drying business on the side. I’m studying herbal medicine and planning my spring beds. Although I’m incredibly blessed by this gift and SO EXCITED, I’m also worried my old bones won’t be able to keep up with the workload. This last month we built a larger run for my 6 chickens. 5 years ago I did my first build, a beautiful chicken house with attached run. Since then I built 3 more. I also learned to machine quilting. I admit it is very taxing on the body, we both have health issues but if you quit they will through dirt on you. We have learned to hire some of the more taxing jobs like digging the holes and setting the fence post. The satisfaction you get seeing the job completed is well worth the pain and struggles to get there.

Just discovered this channel. Used to live on a small 20 acres farm. Had to leave it for hubby’s career, tried to live in town for 7 yrs. Health crash. Now waiting for our closing date on 5 acres. Already have my chickens. Now to get the town property sold, to pay off new place. Fingers crossed.

Do what makes you happy.. we started building farm from woods 6 yrs ago. Gotta say I wished I figured out how to buy somewhere with something cleared. A run down farm for example. Animals eat grass not trees and it's been a pile of work clearing trees and trying to get grasses growing.. hard when 6 months is in a deep freeze.

Hearing you talk about your story amazes me because it reminds me so much of my family’s story! I’m 23 and have a 1 year old daughter and my husband, daughter and I currently live on a small piece of property across from my parents 80 acres which was originally my great grandfathers old farm. I have a small goat farm and will have chickens and meat rabbits soon! My dad has all the equipment and knowledge and hay fields so he is a huge help when it comes to us farming! My dream is to get a big piece of property and build a house with my family that we can raise or child (hopefully children in the future) and grow our farm and creamery. We aren’t sure if we’ll ever be able to borrow money since we’ve never borrowed money before so we don’t really have any credit score so debt free is also our goal. I started to tear up a bit when you both started to talk about building a place with three different generations of your family because it is so emotional and amazing and such a lovely thing to be able to do and I can’t wait to be doing the same thing ❤ Hopefully in the near future I can start making KZbin videos! You guys truly inspire me!

I am so happy for you! To literally build your dream is so exciting! And to be able to do it with your parents is incredibly special. Today would have been my dad’s 72nd birthday. He’s been gone 10 years. As I’m looking for my homestead, it’s constantly in the back of my mind that I wish Dad was here to see this big leap I’m about to take. I know he would be proud of me, he was already so proud of what I did at my last place with my solar power and veggie garden (he didn’t see this house), but I really would give anything to have him come out to look at places with me, be there on moving day, disappear a bit before sunset to take some photos etc. I’m so glad that you guys will have those memories in your forever home. Well, maybe not the disappearing to take photos bit 😂 I can’t wait to watch your progress and learn more from you. I’m not intending to buy raw land and start from scratch but I haven’t ruled it out completely either. No matter what I do, there will be plenty for me to learn from what you’re doing! Gosh I’m so happy for you!

@@Homesteadyshow thank you! That means so much! My dad really was an awesome guy. He didn’t talk an awful lot, but when he did it was always worth listening to. He was kind and generous and patient and wise. He was a landscape photographer and could see beauty that others didn’t notice. There was one photo he took when he was playing with his new macro lens. It was a weed in the drain on their driveway. It always blew my mind that he could see the beauty in a weed which everyone else would ignore or even pull out! I must get that one printed for on my wall. Coz you know, 15 or so large, framed prints just isn’t enough 😂😂 A house only feels like a home once my photos are up. That’s a moving day task 😁 I think if there’s any day he’s going to be looking down to watch what’s happening, moving day will be the one. Oma and Opa (Mum’s parents) too. In other news, I met a lady this week who has Dexter contacts! A breeder, and also a guy who takes his bull around to service cows. Within an hour of where I’m going! I really thought if I was lucky enough to find a cow I was going to be stuck doing AI so I’m stoked that I’m really going to be able to have Dexters! If the land suits of course!

Connecticut is literally the worst place on earth. The people who live there make it even worse. It's just all around terrible. I love rural America, but Connecticut is a pit stop to be avoided when travelling between Boston and New York. It shouldn't even exist. If you want to visit a place where the people completely lack a sense of humor, but have judgment in spades, then Connecticut is your spot. Pretty sure it's Dante's 9th circle of hell. Side note: how does this lady take him seriously with that mustache? Lol wtf man, are you auditioning for the Mario and Luigi movie or something? Chris Pratt already got the part so cut that ridiculous thing off

The yurt is absolutely gorgeous !! beautifully appointed, so full of light & open space & totally cozy & totally speaks the word HOME to me. My mother lives her dream in a canvas over a wooden frame, house tent off grid homesteading as well. If it's good enough for Mongolian horse nomads , on the windswept, frozen, highland steppes, it3s good enough for American homesteaders.

WHOA!! I just had a super- duper way back machine ride moment They look just like my mom & dad, when they started their journey, off -grid homesteading. I am serious , she could be my auntie, she could come to a family reuinion & nobody would bat an eyelash, if she crashed it , we'd just assume she's a close relative ( except my mom's cat's eye glasses, were very exaggerated & totally blinged out & her hair was bleached platinum blonde. He looks like he could be my dad's brother from South Carolina. My dad is from Sicily.

Sounds good! I look forward to hearing more. Finally have my own farm for six years now also, horses first, now chickens; (processed 3 roosters this week); meat birds but not the overfat ones; will lay and when done I'll get meat; I also bought raw land; lots of work doing cleanup and making it productive, esp if one wants to be environmentally-friendly to other critters... Totally on-grid here in SC farm country, but I spent first nine months in a used older RV while house was being built, and that was pretty rustic for a bit. All good. I bought the RV from neighbors who had used it while building their house themselves; sold it to other neighbors who use it as a she-shed and guess quarters.

For the last 6 years, I have been researching everything I can about homesteading, (small) animal husbandry, Eden Garden farming, etc. My husband and I are both disabled and living in a senior majority community, and it makes sense to us to plant a garden that will eventually take care of us even when we cannot take care of it. For years, all I could do was dream about this project because we had huge obstacles in our way, mainly our shoestring budget. In the course of the last week, we have secured a 12'x20' garage that we intend to turn into our Racken House and tack room, and 1- 15'x20' and 1- 20'x40' farm buildings for a fence, raised garden beds, and other various projects... we got all of these supplies (which includes additional lumber and tin sheets) for free from an old farmer who was ready to burn the buildings down. We have also had some extra cash come in to purchase heirloom-only seeds. We only have a few steps to go before we are ready to introduce animals, and it is all moving so quickly now that I can hardly believe it. God is so good, he knew I was going to need the knowledge I accumulated so that when this all started coming together, I would already know what needs to be done and do my part to make it happen. We live on a third acre in a 100-year-old farmhouse in town so our only options for livestock are rabbits and chickens. Our town recently passed a code restricting roosters due to the noise but I am working to appeal the code to include a clause that allows keepers to try a no-crow collar to diminish the nuisance. I don't think it's right to restrict someone's ability to feed their family by preventing them from having a generational flock and free potential broilers, especially in our current climate. It's a bit funny, when I was growing up I could never decide what I wanted to be; I toggled between a singer and a teacher mostly. I ended up in menial labor for over 22 years and wrecked my body being the employee who goes the extra mile. Now that I'm officially a grown-up, all I want to be is a farmer. The older I've grown the more important the food that goes into my family's bodies becomes to me, and I know that the healthiest food you could ever eat grows closest to your door.

In 2016, we got started on making our dream a reality & bought some land. By June of 2017, we moved into the house that we had designed & built ourselves. Sadly, on June 26th of this year, that dream went up in smoke. We lost our house &, consequently, our 2 businesses; leaving our family of 14 homeless & unemployed. Yet, the dream didn't die & we're building again. Thanks to the insurance payout, we now have no mortgage & we're able to pay for this build with cash, completely debt free! After 5 years in the previous house, we're making some small, but good changes this time around & our eldest 6 children are 5-6 years older & adult size now, giving us some much needed help! We're still doing as much as we can ourselves legally & we're hoping to be up & running our business (a catering business) by June. Good luck to you guys! It's going to be an amazing journey!!
