Often as a kid, I'm playing with straws. My favorite is, you can flatten the straw without cutting, and open it up to flatten the opposite way (as, the creases match up, perpendicular folds) you can pinch both ways close to each other, in the middle it will be diagonal crease to get them meeting flats perpendicularly, and by alternate this, you get compression spring instead of tension spring like shown here

In the 1980s in Germany, girls liked bow brooches and hair clips. You can also make them yourself out of straws. For example, the straw was cut off 2 cm before and after the crease and then made two parallel cuts on each side until just before the crease and then ironed smooth with a warm iron. There were real works of art made from intertwined straws.
