Great project and Thank You for making it outta metal. My biggest criticism of woodworkers is they make ALL their jigs from stinking wood scraps. I guess this is okay for a one-off run or occasional use but long term and accurate: nope.
@drfrankensteinscreations
@drfrankensteinscreations 2 жыл бұрын
Well, we use what we know or have around. This would definitely last a lot longer if you plan on doing a lot of slabs for more than just the near future. And it depends on what type of wood you use. Softer woods like pine will definitely loosen and wear but harder stock like oak will last longer and be more durable. Sure the cost will rise and I admit I never have scrap oak large enough for something like this laying around. But furniture builders who would use this more than I would are more likely to have more hardwood offcuts. That being said I really do like the bearing idea which wouldn't work so well on wood rails.

Great build but if that's what you built it for, why a router & not a planer? 3" each pass would be a lot quicker 😊
@invictusbp1prop143
@invictusbp1prop143 2 жыл бұрын
A planer can only do one thing, at one depth, in one direction. A router can run different bits that will cut in the x and y, plus can plunge to varying depth in the z. You could cut inlays or designs and many things a planer could not. Plus planets are unruly and wouldn't be able to be out into the work and run constantly without need to stop at the end of each pass and pick up the tool to relocate it. But a router is always cutting. Plus you can get larger surfacing nuts for the router that would give a wider pass.

other useful idea, nobody never heard of before: wheels! I´m kind of flabbergasted after seeing this. I expected something at least new or outstanding. And then u r showing how to construct a flattening slab - something well known for decades now (for people interested in woodworking)?! btw: u might have heard of a material called aluminum? u might not know, but there are people out there making extrusions of this. so u could have saved at least 70% of your affords by using those instead of treating steel. Last but not least: try to learn about using tools in the right way! Especially forward speed and how deep u go with your (hand-)router. I guess, your nice (and btw well engineered) Bosch router will not last for more than 6 months if you use it daily (what would be a shame for this tool). Mankind distinguishes from apes not by using tools! (in fact they do that too) The difference is made by learning to use them in the right way from others who are experienced. What u r showing is a nice example how to fail.

might use the same thing in combination with a beltsander to get the last of the grooves made by the router out
@drfrankensteinscreations
@drfrankensteinscreations 2 жыл бұрын
The grooves are from a slight tilt of the router. If this is leveled right it really wouldn't take more than a pass with a palm sander to clean it up. A locking bolt in each corner to adjust the lower rails in regard to the bench and you're golden.

Keep them completely open I say as no matter how well you try to shield them chips and dust Will get to them and cause them to go lumpy. I guarantee this and will put money in it. Completely open and exposed they can be wiped instantly ,kept grease free and working at all times. I’ve ran many a bridge saw and timber mill. Down time cleaning shielded runners is an unwelcome job.

After your first use, I can see room for next gen improvement. Like, roller bearings for the crossbeams so the advance movement to the next row is smooth and straight. And, some sort of adjustable stock sled or other method to adjust the height to adapt for stock thickness. I'm thinking though, something like this, with a router. Or, something like this with a hand planer. I have routers, but a hand planar takes off more width per pass. Maybe it could have some sort of stop for each cut width. Then you could just do a pass, move the the planar over one width step, make a pass. The only problem is, you usually make your passes down the length, not cross, so your jig would limit the length of work.
