I explain what is wrong with Rising Star⭐. I made this video 2 weeks before I really discovered something was wrong. Afterwards... he was already suffering from this too. I'll try to briefly explain what's going on. Please check Google for more information. I try to provide information every now and then. I would have liked to make a video showing the 4 months after this video. And an explanation of what I have done with him over the past 4 months. But unfortunately I can't do this in terms of time. Since I do everything with editing alone. In addition, I have my family and all the horses... So I have chosen to simply share my daily horse life with you. Like I always do.
I hope you understand...
Do you have experience with it? Let me know. Perhaps more is possible in other countries? Or maybe I should give up hope?
I'm trying to do the best for Risey. Like I always do.
I also thought to only share this with the subscribers. But I don't. The whole world should know that this also exists. And not just the fun and beautiful Instagram/Facebook/TikTok/Pinterest moments. (And more social's)
Keeping horses is not always fun... 😓
I'm just unlucky with a horse again...
You can of course ask questions. I'm not going to be able to answer everything myself. I'm really glad the mods are helping me with that! Thank you all!!!

Thanks for everything... ❤️ 2 messages from the Mods: - Wobbler syndrome is a structural narrowing of the spinal canal due to a variety of vertebral malformations that lead to spinal cord compression. As a result, horses exhibit signs of spasticity, ataxia, and lack of coordination. Not much is known yet about the cause, which is probably multifactorial. Genetics, breed, diet, age, gender and training, all could possibly play a role. - This is a heart-wrenching situation for Yvonne, and for anyone who has ever experienced it. Yvonne knows more than anyone about NOT giving up, and she would never do anything that is not in the best interest of the horses and does everything possible within her power to make it right. She will exhaust all possiblities before making those difficult dicisions to do only what is right for Risey. We are not there to witness what she or Risey are going through, so we are in no position to make assumptions or to judge. Just send our most positive wishes and hopes her way and be compassionate and supportive.

Yes Yvonne they treat Wobbler’s Syndrome here in Southern California at a couple of equine hospitals!!!They do surgery to correct this and it can be very successful. My trainer once worked for a lady and her horse had this condition. The mare went on to do horse shows after her surgery. If you would like the name of the hospitals let me know. Maybe your vets can consult with the vets here. 🙏Many prayers for you and Risey 🧡🐴🤎.

Yvonne, Secretariat, the thoroughbredTriple Crown Winner winner in the USA, had a son with the wobbler syndrome. The owners donated him to the Washington State University Veterinarian College in the State of Washington, USA. They found a way to surgically repair the problem. They were able to run the thoroughbred at the track in Seattle, Washington, USA, after that. He was not the runner his father was, but he did make the college some money. Don't give up hope on Risey or God. ❤

Besides Washington State College, Yvonne you might want to contact the University of Kentucky. They recommended diet, which I'm sure you're doing. They then performed surgery and recommend doing it before arthritis does too much damage. They are doing the 3D spine replacement surgery and 55% of the horses go on to live a normal life and this was back in 2015. They also work in conjunction with the infamous Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital. Maybe consider a Go Fund Me page for Risey to be able to get the 3D surgery. My neck was broken C3 thru C6 in May 1994. They performed two neck surgeries on my neck and I'm still alive and walking. I look normal but due to nerve damage from the bone breaks, I can only squeeze a checkbook with either hand and only lift 1 lb from the waist up with my left arm. My right can lift 15 lbs. I know how far they have come on broken necks for humans, but since Kentucky is such a horse state = Kentucky Derby and Friends of Retired Race Horses, I'm sure horse wobblers and spine surgery for it has advanced considerably. I hope you will check with both places. Prayers for you, your whole family, and extra for Risey ❤❤❤❤❤.❤❤❤

Hi I'm so sorry about Risey. however, I had an OTTB with wobbler syndrome. I didn't know it when I got her after her last race at 2.5yrs old. She was diagnosed as a yearling. The breeder gave her to Dr Barry Grant, here in Bonsall, CA, USA, who developed the wobbler surgery. My mare was a 2 with 5 the worst. He operated on her. He put a metal basket around the 2 affected vertebrae in her neck. When she recovered she was put on the race track and she tore her hamstring. I got her 1 week after her injury and didn't know she had wobbler surgery. I found out when I had her for 8mos . She was too weak in hind end to be my event horse or do dressage. She was so special and I kept her. However, she was a fantastic trail horse and in S. CAL she did steep trails for decades. I just lost her in Jan 2023 due to laminitis. Two months shy of 24th birthday. We had 21 wonderful years together. So maybe surgery is an option for Risey. I feel your pain.

That is exactly what is fine in the human world. I have a metal cage around the vertebrae affected. They enlarged the narrowed openings which caused the stenosis Glad the technique is transferable to the equine world, regardless if this is an option for Risey or not.

I am in California USA, I had a Friesian stallion, Arthur, I got Arthur when he was 15 years old. He was purposely pushed to grow big by the breeder. He was 17.1 hands. He had problems with both his rear leg tendons being too short. He was diagnosed with arthritis in his neck that put pressure on his spinal cord that caused Wobblers syndrome when he was about 20. It seemed to come on suddenly. His treatment was Adaquan, & Previcox, both arthritis medicines, & walking up low hills & over polls to get him to pick up his & strengthen & lengthen his rear leg tendons. This treatment worked very well & he was moving very well & it seemed to help him a lot. I got him in pretty good condition & he was moving very well, but I did stop riding him. I loved this horse so much. He passed away at age 24 in 2015.

I am a M.D. (Medical Doctor) in the U.S., so I am trained to take care of human medical problems. In the human, spinal cord compression is typically treated surgically (by Neurosurgeons or Orthopedic physicians) with bone being removed to free the cord. If there is bone defect of the vertebrae this also can be addressed with grafting, for example. Vertebraplasty is done by Interventional Radiologists who can inject a glue into vertebrae. I mention all of this in hope that similar things may be being done by Vets for horses and for our beautiful Risey. However this turns out, I hope Risey will at least be able to live his life happy and pain free perhaps as a pasture horse with his friends. I hope you will let us know if you need help (financially or otherwise), as well.

Here is my humble opinion. If one vet says no and the other says wait, and you, Yvonne who knows this horse so well and love him cannot decide, wait. As long as Risey does not suffer. I know you will be VERY watchful for suffering. I just think the tides will turn in one direction or another, then you will know, and be able to decide without confusion. My belief is that if you cannot make a decision, wait for the decision to be obvious. We all send you love and our prayers for your wisdom in this situation. Your love is unquestioned by me.

When you originally brought up "lameness" I assumed a paddock accident. Then your video a couple of days back I figured out it was Wobbler syndrome. I lost a 2yo colt to Wobblers years ago. Lost a dog to it 18 months ago. Don't know if it would work for Rising Star, but look up "Seattle Slew Basket". The Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew, developed Wobblers when he was older, probably as the result of the stresses put on his neck as a breeding stallion. A surgeon developed a metal "basket" that was implanted in his spine at the area where the pinching was taking place and it relieved the pressure. He returned to normal. The "basket" is now also used for for humans with spinal stenosis.

@@scrubjay93 Thank you. The colt I lost 40 years ago. There was zero you could do about Wobblers back then. The dog came as a surprise as she wasn't that old and not a giant breed. But the defect was right at the base of her skull and causing complete paralysis. The diagnosis was definite and there was nothing that could be done for it with where the problem was. I did what I had to do. Slew was a great horse on the track and as a stallion. He was overlooked at the yearling sales because he had a front "slew foot" - hence that part of his name. Because of the crooked leg he only cost $17K. He was also by an unproven sire in Bold Reasoning, a modest winner on the track who died of colic at the age of 7, leaving two very small crops. Slew was in his first crop. When the final score was in, Bold Reasoning had produced an astounding percentage of stakes winners out of his few get. Something like 17% - unheard of back then, and certainly now with the much bigger crops.

Dear Yvonne, It's so heartbreaking to hear this... We're currently having a foal with wobbler syndrome too, it was really really bad. (Couldn't walk straight without tumbling and falling from one day to the other) We gave him some time, rest and relearned walking with him (almost a year), some nerve supporting minerals and Vitamins (sounds pretty silly, i know) but the foal progressed and is on an absolutely promising way to spent a "normal" life even to ride him one day. He's now playing with other foals on the pasture without any signs of tumbling. Fingers crossed, that Risey will experience the same promising way. Lot's of prayers and hugs from germany.🐎🫶 PS. Please take your time, don't worry if you can't post any videos due to lack of time.

I have a spinal cord injury and am supposed to be in a wheelchair, but I'm not. B vitamins and magnesium are critical for nerve function. Vitamins didn't fix the mess in my spine or give my cord the space it lost, but to this day they make a noticeable difference in how the nerves fire and respond. When I quit taking them for awhile I get more spastic and sensations get really messed up. So, no it's not silly! It's smart! It sounds like you too have the proof of that with your foal. I think many underestimate what proper nutrition and certain vitamins/minerals are capable of doing for the body. It's never bad to make sure our bodies have every building block known to benefit a condition even if it can't fix it it might improve things or prevent it from getting worse. Definitely helps with recovery after surgery in healing nerves. I had 2 surgeries that were deemed to be "unsuccessful", but I think the second one helped a lot even though it didn't get it completely "fixed".

Many years ago, I had an Arabian colt who was a yearling, and had some coordination issues that were diagnosed as wobbler syndrome. I chose to give him more time, despite the grim diagnosis by UC Davis, and he eventually outgrew it by the time he was three. Sometimes wobblers is misdiagnosed, and once that diagnosis is given, the next veterinarian that knows about it is already looking for that, so they confirm it. I would definitely give him as much time as you can, as long as he is not in pain or suffering. Praying he will outgrow it, like my boy did.

Yvonne! I'm so sorry to hear this about Risey. I had a feeling when you first started talking about him being lame. I had one of my Thoroughbreds diagnosed with Wobblers. He was very young like Risey and, obviously, didn't go on in his training to be a race horse. BUT! The vet said that he was okay to live his life as a pasture horse. Obviously he couldn't be ridden or worked, but he could live in a paddock with a pasture buddy. One of the employees at the farm where he was in training decided to adopt him! I'm sorry I don't have more details but I guess it all depends on the severity of each individual case. Hi Yvonne, I've been silently following you for years, since Risey was born. Absolutely love and appreciate your channel. I've fallen in love with all your horses. My advise is from experience, I had a special bond with my horse and have had a similar experience, there were signs that something was wrong, also took a while to discover. I had my own special horse, Vinnie. Vinnies C4 C5 C6 were damaged and compression on his spinal cord occurring. Dragging his back legs. falling, exactly the same symptoms. My vet never said to put him to sleep, though lots of equestrians did. Instead we started acupuncture and body work to help his muscles. Diet was important too. Originally I was told to keep him on the flat, but I bought a little farm on a soft sloping hill. His life changed, he had to pick up his feet, he build muscle. Vinnie was very happy and had learned or adjusted, he did have to have a much more settled respectful paddock pony to keep him company. Vinnie passed last year after a fall he could not get up from, he had seven spoiled years. Just to add I am a single income home owner, it wasn't flash or fancy but he didn't care. Thank you Yvonne, i hope you get to read this. I am a dedicated fan, thank you

I am so sorry about Risey!!🥺 From what I know about Wobblers there is surgery with MRI first to see how the spinal cord is. Diet with calcium & phosphorus in correct ratio as well as zinc & copper in correct ratio. Also, drugs such as mannitol, furesmide & DMSO... If being a pasture buddy like Sjors is okay as long as he is not in pain. You & Risey have a deep connection, he will let you know. Like the one comment said walk him over ground poles to strengthen tendons. We all feel what you feel, Risey is our Prince!! You & Risey are in our prayers 🙏❤!!

Yvonne, I know a few people that have been in your shoes about Wobblers. In Arizona and Texas, in both cases they used a chiropractor just for horses. The horse is given adjustments for awhile and it works! The chiropractor has to be licensed and you’d be surprised what they can do for an animal. Horse Chiropractics are very common in the United States. I don’t know about Europe but I would seriously look into it. Only one who has the education and licensing and experience would do for Rising Star!!! We all love you and Rising Star and all your horses.

I have somewhat of a background in what chiropractic can do for humans and have heard many stories over the years of this practice extending to the animal kingdom. It ain't over till it is over. Equine chiropractic by all means and the sooner the better. Find the best in the world to get their opinion! I just feel it in my bones this story will have a happy ending!

I was thinking maybe chiropractic might help, but after reading the descriptions of what causes this problem, I'm not so sure. It sounds like removing him from the pasture with the lively colts, and putting him with a quieter horse, might be helpful. Exercises, waiting, and surgery all sound useful. But how would chiropractic open up vertebrae that are too narrow, if that's the cause?

Dear Yvonne, I'm so sorry to hear about Rising Star! There is a Vet Clinic here in Germany, in Lüsche, that has a specialist in spinal surgery in horses. (A minimal invasive Surgery of Foramen- and spinal stenosis in the neck). As far as I know he's the only one who practices this kind of surgery. I was very sad to see this news about Risey's lameness. I had heard of Wobblers syndrome in large breed dogs but until now was not aware of the occurrence in horses. A few minutes of inquiry on the internet here in the US led me to a very interesting article from Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons in Newmarket England, where Wobblers is estimated to occur in 2 - 3% of Thoroughbreds and they treat CVSM (Cervical Vertebrae Stenotic Myelopathy - the scientific name for Wobblers) through medical management and surgery. The article included detailed information about the symptoms, developmental stages of the condition and range of outcomes, all of which I found extremely interesting and encouraging. I know that Yvonne and her veterinary team and all her supporters will do everything possible to educate themselves about Risey's condition and will seek out the best possible solutions for him. I send you all my most positive thoughts and prayers.

Dearest Yvonne! Despite being NO Wobbler expert, most of my older family have been Doctors/Veterinarian/Professors of medicine. I personally have had major surgery to remove and replace a Shattered Spinal Disc, pressing on my Spinal Cord, causing huge problems. I therefore have a little more knowledge than many! It sounds like you want reassurance in helping you know that you are doing the right thing for your amazing Rising Star?? It appears from what you have said, that in RS's case, growing too fast, too soon, could have heavily contributed to his Wobblers, which is currently not severe and merely a little confusing for him. Sometimes when you physically grow so fast, different parts of you grow (including tiny ear canals!), at a different pace, sometimes causing huge physical difficulties, which appear quickly but gradually - then either get better or worse. In my opinion - If the YOUNG horse/dog is in otherwise good condition, with TIME, it is quite possible for the bones to grow enough so they are no longer compressing on the spinal cord, entirely or to a significant degree. If there is nerve damage (very little it appears in your video), it could take some further months for the nerves to regenerate. Rest and regular very light exercise, with the new wonder drugs they have today, could definitely make a Huge difference. VIP: One of your Vets strongly recommended you be patient and hopeful. He obviously BELIEVES that due to RS's Health, Vigour and obvious lack of pain, that given SOME months, his problems may physically resolve themselves to a large degree, or just maybe - completely. Why would he be so cruel as to get your hopes up?? Obviously RS is being heavily monitored and assessed. You, Yvonne are living testament of how amazing Mammals bodies can be, at repairing themselves, given the chance and being lucky!! Anyway, dearest Yvonne, I Know you will make the Right decision about Risey. Whatever that may be - I am right behind you xx

Yvonne, my heart aches for you and Risey. Since you asked, there's a large-scale equine group out on the east coast of the USA that works with Vets (and the premier Vet educational schools) from 3 states. I believe they encountered this in a young horse they rescued. I'd recommend contacting Olivia or Ally at Colby's Crew Rescue, to find out who worked with the horse and treatments they tried. At least they could get doors opened for you. I know your heart must ache in ways we cannot imagine, but there has to be an answer somewhere. We'll all be praying for you, and your dear Risey.

😪 i just read a very informative article on it; treatment depends on the cause. Yvonne, please ask your vet what high doses of vitamin B12 can do for him. My previous dog had a very severe TIA (a real one, not the geriatric vestibulair one) and had his death sentence already given. He was blind, absolutely NO proprioception. My boss (the vet) knew what he meant to me and we tried insane dosage of vitamin B12, combined with steroids. He made a full recovery. The B12 helps the nerve system to send signals to brain better. I dont know how to explain it better in English. And please contact Tom Mariën, i commented on your post from yesterday about him. He's no wizard, but you'll never know. I can contact him for you to start up the conversation if you want to (i can imagine that this is not something you can talk about to every vet everytime again). I am so so so sorry for this. I'm so sorry, Yvonne. I didn't have a horse with Wobblers. I had a dog. We came home from my dad's funeral to find her screaming in pain on the floor. She was paralyzed at about the shoulders down. We kept her warm, because shivering from the cold can make it worse, rolled her over every two hours, and hand fed her. Acupuncture treatment was working. She was starting to mover her legs and hold her head up. Then her uterus got infected. The vet said she wouldn't survive on her back for the spay. We said goodbye to her.

Yvonne, I'm so sorry to hear this! I had a Doberman Pinscher with wobbler's syndrome (very common in the breed unfortunately) and acupuncture helped him greatly with symptoms. We went weekly for about 6 months, and I would notice he could lift his leg to mark/pee again after a treatment. The treatments themselves were very relaxing for him and he would often doze off in my hands, so I think it felt good too. I ended up travelling to get him gold bead implants (a permanent form of acupuncture) and he made it another year with me, and his quality of life was good until the end. I would definitely recommend looking into acupuncture and or gold bead implants if it's available in your country. Wishing you both all the best. Watching the friend that you love struggle and not understand why is so heartbreaking.

This might be controversial in animal world, but as a human being, as long as he isn’t in pain, I see nothing wrong with letting him enjoy his life with a disability. As long as he can walk, eat, move about, even with an odd limp, he deserves to be alive as much as the others. He doesn’t have to be a sire or go into competitions. He can just be a horse. It’s obvious he’s loved and cared for, and that he feels it too. I say, just keep loving him. If I was him, I’d want to live.

I don't own horses, but I researched the condition here in the United States and where it is being successfully treated. Cornell University in Ithaca, NY has one of the best equine vet schools in the United States. They currently have a clinical trial using stem cell therapy for lameness or neurologic diseases in horses. I also read some interesting documents on equine wobblers from another top vet school, the University of California, Davis Campus Veterinary Medicine Center for Equine Health. Perhaps your vets could reach out to either of these places for information. I know you will do everything in your power to help Risey.

Yvonne really did tell us everything we need to know about Rising Star in this video. The one thing I already know about "Lameness" is that there is a huge difference between a little tendinitis in the limb and Wobblers disease. When Yvonne said "Wobblers", my heart sank. I instantly remembered the Friesian horse, Myrthe, at Stal G. She also had it when she was still a young filly, and in her case, it was so bad that eventually she couldn't stand up. As Yvonne said, a horse cannot live like that. I take heart that Rising Star is still able to stand up and walk and eat, and so on. When I was researching "Lameness" the other day, I was watching videos made by Vets at Equine hospitals and research centers here in the U.S. These people devote their entire lives to learning new ways to treat illness and disease in horses. Who knows? Perhaps one of them has some experimental treatment or surgery that they are working on for Wobblers Disease. ALL hope may not be lost. Yet. The conflicting prognosis Yvonne is receiving makes me think that perhaps there is some cutting edge treatment being developed somewhere, . . . If not in The Netherlands itself. Maybe some Vets know about it, and others do not. I know that I will be looking in America to see if anyone here is working on something. We should all do as Yvonne suggests, and check our own Countries to see if there is anything she can try there in Friesland. Yvonne is both wise and loving when it comes to her horses. She would not let Risey suffer in pain. As long as he can stand and eat, I think she will feed him and love him, just as she always has. People doctors in America do neck surgeries to relieve pressure on the spinal cord every day. Maybe Vets ARE trying this in horses, too. I hope they are, and that something like this can be done for Risey. Meanwhile, I guess we hope and pray.

I (and many others) have done some research and found that there IS a surgical treatment for Wobblers that was developed in the U.S. decades ago. It has been shared with Equine Surgeons around the world. It just may not be known in the place where Yvonne lives, or there may not be a Surgeon who performs this kind surgery nearby. Our friend, Greg Hammer, is putting together a list of Surgeons and Facilities for Yvonne to check out. Perhaps one of them can look at Rising Star's x-rays and tell us if he is a good candidate for this surgery. We can be hopeful without getting our hopes up too high. This is very complicated, expensive surgery with a long recovery time for the horse. It's not a quick fix, and it may not even be feasible at all. For now, we can only continue as we have been; keeping Rising Star in our thoughts and prayers. 💙

yes there is the possibility of surgery to relieve the compression of nerves and the spinal cord. Images of the spine in the neck are necessary as is having a surgeon trained for the surgery.

Yvonne. Please test several times for LYMES DISEASE, the swallows and deer bring the ticks. My half Friesian suddenly fell on his knees. His muscles wasted, topline wasted..he had rear end weakness. LYME Disease is known to cause tripping and rear end weakness, like EPM, and neck stiffness like Arthritis, Vets often mistake it! I’m in Oregon USA and my vet had never considered testing horses in my area, so I requested it anyway. yes, my horse had an active infection, doxycycline has cleared it up completely and he regained his weight and happy personality. I have him on immunbiom, spine and nerve supplement that is excellent. He almost died from it even his cheek and brow muscles atrophied so his face had a ‘dry look’ Lyme disease symptoms vary per horse. I hope you can save Rising Star, what a beauty💕, I’m so sorry to hear this news, you are amazing.

I spoke to some horse vets in my country I know. They do say, that a specific combination of a diet (that is aimed at stunting horse's growth), injections of glucocorticoids, dimethyl sulfoxide and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs sometimes directly to the compressed vertebrae, and rarely surgery does show some nice results. They were adamant on two things, though, that without any therapy, there would be no chance of recovery, and surgery should be attempted as the last resort.

I wondered if he might grow out of it once everything catches up. I guess it might depend on how close to "full grown" that he is. My theory is that if he isn't in pain and it doesn't get much worse, geld him and let him be a pet like the ponies.

Almost 35 years ago, the only horse I had ever called my own, was diagnosed with "The Wobbled". He wasn't quite a 5yo. I was given 2 options. Put him down, or donate him to the local veterinarian college, (one of the best in the US at that time). By donating him to that school, he had a fighting chance. It would also allow the Doctors and students a way to study this syndrome and by doing so, gather enough information to possibly create a way to reverse, if not keep this from happening to other horses in the future. Either way, I wasn't going to, (nor did I ever), see him again. As devastating as it was to let him go, I did so with that tiny bit of hope that they were able to help him, and that he may have survived any treatments they gave him.

I’ve read that there are surgical procedures that can help take the pressure off the nerves. Also the article says that there are medications that must be taken aggressively and early for the best results. I don’t know if you want to go this route. It could be expensive. Yvonne, my prayers are with both you and Rising Star. This breaks my heart. ❤️

Dont know if this is even possible in the Netherlands but I’ve heard of this in the states. It’s called Surgical fusion of the affected spinal vertebrae. It is done to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord. The horse is placed under general anesthesia on his back. The neck is extended, and special stainless steel ‘baskets’ are screwed into place in the area of the vertebral disc. The baskets are filled with the bone fragments that are removed during the drilling process. With time, the bone fuses through the basket, and the vertebrae are permanently fixed in place. Typically 80% of all patients can improve. Thirty-three percent of horses perform athletically again.

Thank you Yvonne for being so brave to share this with us.Same as everyone else here, I know you will make the best decisions for Risey. When you described the cause (pressure on the spinal column / narrowing of the spinal canal), it reminded me of a good friend of mine who had successful surgery for something called "spinal stenosis" which sounds very similar: maybe it is the name of the human equivalent condition? It was hereditary for her, and she made a full recovery. This might be entirely different and not relevant, but I wanted to mention it in case it might be helpful. 🙏🙏🙏

As a nurse I am so heartbroken for you as well as all the viewers to hear that are beautiful Rising Star has Wobblers disease.. I did some research I see that surgery DOES help and there are things that can help neurologically.. I will continue to pray very much for you, Risey, stable H and the entire herd. Please let us know if you decide for surgery or if it's available for him... And I certainly pray that the Lord Jesus will give you mighty blessings and you keep hugging up and loving up that beautiful horse.. I have two veterinarians in my family and they say dogs can also get Wobblers . Two and a half years ago I had to put my 12-year-old beautiful German Shepherd service dog to sleep because he developed something similar and after walking four or five steps he would just fall down and couldn't get up.. He was so beautiful and so intelligent as most German Shepherd service dogs are. Tho I still miss him a lot I'm happy that he is in a better place...❤ ✝️💖✝️💖✝️.

Over in the US here. For those who are talking about him being a pasture pet, wobblers can be dangerous for both horse and handlers. Falls are common and unless it’s on a soft surface the horse can get seriously injured. Everything for him depends on the severity of the disease and whether it’s progressing fast. My heart breaks for him but I know Yvonne will do everything to make sure he has the best life.

As a RN I am aware that humans with spinal stenosis can get relief with facet joint injections - it is minimally invasive as opposed to spinal surgery. I'm not sure if this is available to horses but it may be worthwhile checking in with a specialist vet to see if it is possible.

Yvonne, my heart hurts for you and all your hopes and plans for Risey's future that can't be now. I can't imagine how hard it is to grieve a lost future at the same time you're trying to figure out what a new future might look like...if any...for Risey. I know there's so much more that we don't know yet...where the narrowing of the bone is, if there's inflammation that could go down over time, or if surgery could partly help. Plus there's cost vs outcome/quality of life to try to predict, not knowing. Can there be a place for Risey in your new, growing business, where he can be safe and comfortable as a companion gelding? I know this sounds nuts, but I can't help feeling there's a children's book/story in this journey, about a little foal who lost his mother, found sanctuary with the Queen, dreamed big dreams, and then developed a life altering condition and found a different path to a new place in life. I dunno. I wish I had the drawing talent to do this. Whatever the outcome, whatever you decide to do, Risey's life has been an inspiration to us all in adaptibility, enthusiasm, acceptance and friendship. I hope there are more chapters to come and that time and careful intervention can stabilize his condition, but I also know that you will always, always do what is best for the horse, and we will be here to support you.

It feels like an impossible situation when an animal we love is experiencing a serious medical issue. On what basis do we decide anything? How much money to spend? How much time to wait? How much risk to take? All we can do is look at the research and do our soul-searching, and in the meantime give the animal as good a life as possible. Very difficult. Best wishes.
