Their 1995 album “Pierced from Within” was huge and one of the best of the genre. You should definitely check out the title track.

The Beastie Boys association? You are actually picking up on the power of SLAYER!! Pretty sure you are thinking of Slayer solos lol... To wit?? You nailed it because on the song No Sleep Till Brooklyn by Beastie Boys? Kerry King FROM Slayer plays that solo... The guitar player Terrance Hobbs has been doing crazy whammy bar stuff since 89' and is very recognizable by his style...

The use of whammy bar reminded me of a pioneer death metal band Morbid Angel's debut album Altars of Madness which came out in 89 I believe. If you're curious, there's a song called Visions from the Dark Side that incorporates these messy, straight-up bizarre whammy bar solos. It sounds bonkers even in this day and age where we've heard a lot of different stuff. And I agree with your mention of static vocals, and that's the reason why most death metal kinda has to have these catchy/groovy riffs to sound pleasing to my ears.

I’ve seen these guys live quite a few times and they are absolutely bonkers! Especially with Frank Mullen on vocals, but to be fair, their new vocalist fits this band like a glove. As some others have mentioned, if you’re gonna check out Suffocation again, I highly recommend you check out their 1995 album.

Everything already commented on the band and music so I wanted to comment on lyrical themes in metal. For me, listening to the aggressive music always helped me release negative emotions in a safe way. It's similar when it comes to those darker lyrical themes: it's a way to explore uncomfortable (understatement) emotions and situations in a controlled environment. Or it's like those true crime podcasts, but for dudes. 😄

The Breeding the Spawn album is peak Suffo for me. Prelude to Repulsion is probably one of the greatest death metal songs of all time. This album is ok, I love the drum sound. Live these guys were an absolute force of nature. I’ve yet to hear a tighter band. It’s one thing to hear it on a stereo or headphones it’s another thing altogether to hear it live.

late 80's and early 90's death metal bands went wild with the whammy bar, that was a staple during solos at the time. best example for that would be the album from beyond by massacre, lots of wild solos there. and the weird whammy sound you're referring to is caused by flicking the whammy bar, like when you push on a flexible doorstopper then it springs back, he's doing that with the whammy bar. there's also earlier use of it by the band, off the top of my head the title track of their album pierced from within has it right at the end of the solo, but there's more examples too

This song was perfect for last week's choice, that was brutality. It's not as hard as Cattle Decap, but it is as brutal as death metal could get in 2006 without becoming brutal death metal. And, from the lyrics, the "battling demons" explanation is neat, but the song is really about a murderer's motives in a first person POV. At 23:01 that dude you describe is real: Dennis Rader, the BTK Killer, who had been recently apprehended (he was arrested in 2005, the album came out in 2006) and it was around the time metal bands were really into writing songs about killers (Bloodbath's Eaten and Rammstein's Mein Teil, both songs from 2004 about Armin Meiwes). The only thing they did differently was not reference him but everyone knew it was about him. And it being death metal, it could have been worse. It could have been them describing the crimes instead of his mindset to do the crimes.

This is hardly their best material and just this year put out one of their BEST albums after 30 years plus of playing and it really does stack up to all new school Death Metal and proving that they still are The GOATS! Their album Despised the Sun has some of their tightest and most polished executions...

There's a music video for this track, but couldn't find it on YT, but can be found on some Asian and Russian streaming sites. It's also been used for a funny History Channel commercial, worth the 33 seconds of your life. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5aceYech7p8eZYsi=W0_7XGtjIXXPhQjH As of the guitar solo, it's definitely one of the wildest ones I have heard from them, oftentimes it's more clear articulation and picking, and shred. As of the whammy bar use, definitely it's been influentially used by KK Downing of Judas Priest and by Slayer, so not that uncommon, but probably used to the very extreme here.

What? There's so much bass and it's pretty clear for a death metal record. Anyways, it'd be interesting to see your reaction to their first album (Effigy of the Forgotten), a song like "Jesus Wept". It's from 1991 and I think you could hear where all the later bands got their slow breakdowns from. Apparently they spawned deathcore.

Regarding the lyrics, I'm curious about your opinion on this: Supposing Suffocation wrote the lyrics as an analysis/first person POV of the mind of a serial killer, even a real one, is there something wrong with that? I don't find there is any praise or glorification of the killer; no mention of his name, you'd have to search it up to know it was a real person. I can understand it being unpleasant to read these lyrics, not being to your taste. And you mention that there is an element of empathy, I agree. But empathizing isn't necessarily justifying their actions, but trying to understand their experience. I mean, plenty of us consume horror media which is filled with extremely dark stuff. Obviously you have to be in the right mindset to get an experience out of it that's worth it for you. And of course there are people that exist within these spaces that do just love adding shock-value and/or perverse shit for the pleasure of it, but to me these lyrics don't read like that, it's more focused on the headspace than the actions carried out. To me, the enjoyment of horror media comes down to consumer expectations just as much what the artist is delivering. I also think part of what happens whenever lyrics like this come up on this channel, is that since you're platforming the music, there's almost an obligation to judge the moral character of lyrics (which I completely understand). I think it can be pretty difficult to enjoy/get into the headspace of this kind of stuff if you're all tangled up in morality of it. Out of curiosity, do you find yourself doing the same thing when watching a horror film, for example?
@MaaZeus2 ай бұрын
This. Singing about something is not the same thing as glorifying it and understanding someones viewpoint is not the same as condoning it. The horror movie is a good example. Most good villains (be they fictional or based on true story) have a motivation how he justified his actions. In some perverse way you may even find his justification make some morbid sense if you see the situation from his twisted perspective. But as clear headed, morally straight backed individual none of that ever justifies their actions, instead it may even make him more of a villain instead of just a nut that is not fully comprehending what he is doing and needs a sanitarium instead of jail or electric chair. Or the opposite, it confirms that the villain is truly insane when his motivations are completely out there.
