I sincerely doubt this was hydrolocked. That is when there is so much water in a cylinder, it takes up more room than the compressed volume of the cylinder and the motor cannot turn over at all past TDC. The result is bent rods, not valve trouble. The valves must be fully closed for hydrolocking to occur. My best guess is rusty valve stems from standing for such a long time with water on the cylinders. It is possible that, if they have stuck wide open, some have been struck by the pistons turning over and so can't close any more, hence zero compression. A boroscope would help you to see if that has happened.

Hope it’s not too serious Brett. I really like the XJ40s. Probably a great classic car bargain. Very handsome cars. The interiors are nice too and the leather they used seems to be really good quality.

Crank shaft positioning sensor has gone caput. cheap replacement usually fixes this. It is on the front of the engine behind the radiator. It could be just dirty, but they fail at around 100K mark from my experience. Those engines are usually bomb proof, I have run two cars to 190K and changed them due to bodywork needing repairs. It will be sparking but at the wrong time if the positioning sensor is not reading the crank position correctly. This is a very common and easily replaced part. .

Bugger eh !! Not likely a piston do ya reckon ? More likely a valve dilemma ? , hope you can sort it not too expensively . Hope your mechanic is honest , of late mechanics where I live are completely unrealistic about what they charge (Western Australia ) and they’re none too good either , good luck you’ve done all the things you could do really , great work .

No comp at all may mean a sticky valve. If it ran fine before means it doesnt automatically goto 0 comp. See what ya mate says.

A question: is it normal for the dash to go off when turning the motor over? I'd have thought that is a sign of low voltage/weak battery which wouldn't help the spark surge of the equation. Thanks for posting, I've again, and good luck with this car.

Oh no! And really, my 1991 XJ40 has been super reliable all summer long. Sad to see this one having such problems. I did the head gasket job on mine and it's a long job to do, but not terribly difficult. The longest part is removing the intake and exhaust manifold.

Do you think the engine was hydrolocked then? If that was the case you'd have water in the oil I guess. Hope it can be sorted.
@tjmthejagmandownunder2 ай бұрын
There is no water in the oil, probably just enough in the cylinders to seize things up. It may loosen up
@Ardent4452 ай бұрын
While I do not disagree with your diagnosis, I tend to look for the easiest things first. You did say it was sort of running before being parked up and that it would fire on starting fluid - water in the injectors and cylinders while not desirable will not kill the engine on the basis of turning it over on the starter. I would turn off the fuel pump, and see if you van get the engine firing on starting fluid. Then remove one plug at a time and restart to blow all the crap out the cylinders. When done that - then do a wet compression test and a leak down test - so what happens. If the issues then remain, is the XJ40 really worth getting the engine fixed - as a hobby maybe but to pay some one - is not really worth it. Good luck - it is a shame it has happened.
@tjmthejagmandownunder2 ай бұрын
Hi Arden.I agree i'm not giving up yet!. Also agree there was more water in those cylinders than what an injector would squirt in their. However did turn over quite a bit before realising that I had water in the tank!. I haven't wet tested it yet I'll leave until tomorrow, give it a good clean out. Maybe I have a minor head gasket weep that is that was none delectable.she did sit for a while! . I'm surprised all cylinders where down and second front had zero, it can only be a valve. Ill continue to video the next steps Thanks for your support TJM

My guess is that the cap wasn't sealing correctly. It wasn't from a servo as it wouldn't have made it home. The car sat for months, unused when I was OS. We had a f'ing lot of rain

Ohhhh-to feel the sun on your back when you’re working on your XJ40, instead of cold English rain a lot of the time! (Aussies have it too easy!) Is the lack of bonnet insulation an Aussie delete for hot weather? P.S. IMHO those alloys are hideous! Car would look great with 15” or 16” “lattice” alloys (NOT the Fondmetal ones! 🤮) That engine doesn’t sound like it’s anything like Hydrolocked or has bent valves. If it ran on easy start it should run 🤷🏻♂️

@ Oh. Not an Aussie delete! The early 40’s had two under bonnet lights (later deleted by Ford’s accountants) Later ones like mine (last of the Browns Lane line 94) don’t 😕. Other crap Ford changes include the replacement of a hard boot liner for carpet (so when you close the boot on something hard you get an inside out dent 👍🏻), and a modified front bumper valance so that water gets trapped underneath the lower radiator mounting bracket, it rots away, and without warning the radiator falls out of the bottom of the car….👍🏻
