Your obligatory 'Prometheus is overtuned' comment here. That was super close for no reason at all even though you were on 0 fear. Trivia time! The plot of the first game derives from the Kidnapping of Persephone, one of the most famous Greek Myths of all time and a just-so story explaining why the Greeks have seasons. So the story goes, Hades asked Zeus permission for his daughter (in Greek Myth Persephone is Zeus and Demeter's daughter) Persephone's hand in marriage, which Zeus granted to his older brother without hesitation. Neither of them consulted Demeter herself on the matter, which will become important very quickly. Persephone was plucking flowers at the time, either with Athena and Artemis or a set of nymph attendants. Either Artemis and Athena were too far away from Persephone at the time and didn't notice her disappearance, or the nymph attendants failed to stop Hades from taking her and were transformed into the Sirens you fight with Scylla in Hades 2 as a punishment for their failure handed out by Demeter. Regardless, Persephone ended up way down, Hadestown with her mother none the wiser. Demeter fell into a deep despair over her missing daughter, wandering the Earth searching for her city-by-city (something I talked about briefly in the myths about her punishments) in a state of bitterness and anger that she took out on mortalkind. This is the mindset we find her in during Hades 1, where she often quips about how mortals are useless and don't deserve her boons during her Boon dialogue and talks about taking everything away and returning things to nothing during her Greater Call dialogue. You can also see her in a purely wintery outfit with a heavy shawl not unlike a mourner's outfit dotted with snowflakes. This is in stark contrast to her Hades 2 design, but we'll get to that. Helios, the Titan who drives the Sun and is opposite to Selene eventually caved after seeing Demeter so despondent over the course of some number of years, telling her he saw Hades snatch up Persephone and deliver her down into the Underworld. Furious, Demeter either threatened to starve mortalkind to death in a protest against Zeus to do her divine duties or the cries of mortalkind became unbearable to the other Gods and they and the mortals themselves eventually convinced Zeus to do something about the situation. Zeus relenting on blessing his brother's marriage in order to keep the peace between Gods and Mortals and save them from Demeter's wrath is another one of those examples of Zeus being an arbiter of justice I mentioned. As such, Zeus demanded Hades return Persephone to the surface world, which Hades agreed to. Before he did, though, he offered Persephone some food from the Underworld--the seeds of a Pomegranate, her symbol of power in Hades 1 and 2 (which I talked about earlier during your max Poms run). Persephone had been careful not to eat anything since she arrived because of the Greek laws of hospitality, Xenia. Under these laws, you could not take food from a host without consequence. But Persephone relented, either because Hades slipped her the seeds or because she didn't see the harm in eating a meager six seeds or because she was so hungry by this point. Whatever the case, she became bound by divine contract to the Underworld for part of the year, one month for each seed that she ate. Persephone became forced to split the difference between Hades and her mother Demeter. The exact number of months depended on the length of winter in the region--remember, this story is meant to explain the existence of the seasons. In most tellings in the modern period this number has been six months, as it was for the Romans who were further North. But for the original Greeks this was four months and four seeds eaten, since their more Southernly winter is shorter. Hades 1 neatly sidesteps this issue by having Persephone refuse to elaborate on how many seeds she ate and how long she stays in the Underworld, only mentioning the seed-to-month formula. Because Persephone is torn between her at-one-time unwilling husband and her mother, every year Demeter is jubilant and happy and gives boons and blessings when her daughter is returned to her, creating the spring and summer months. But as the departure of Persephone gets closer and closer, she becomes more and more saddened and her power over life wains as she falls into despair again, leading to fall and then winter. Her design in Hades 2 does an excellent job at referencing the seasons being tied to her bond with her daughter and her overall mood. In Hades 2, she has cleaned up her hair, toned and trained her body for warfare and is dressed in battle armour, but while she still is covered in icy reminders of being denied her daughter's company for so long she has bronze leaves of autumn adorning her as well that reference her hope of fighting past Chronos to be reunited with her family once again. Hades also changes several details of this myth in small but very important ways. In Hades 1, we learn the relationship between Persephone and Hades was consensual, with Persephone being attracted to Hades because he is honest, straightforward and averse to the petty drama and toxicity that so much of his family indulges themselves in (frankly very understandable). But the myth of Persephone missing and Demeter causing turmoil on the surface with an endless winter in her despair is played out more or less the same way. The end of the main story explains that in this telling, Zeus was the one who kidnapped Persephone and delivered her to the Underworld as a kind of 'gift' for his brother because he drew the shortest stick out of the three brothers when they were dividing up the cosmos. Hades didn't dare tell Demeter what had happened, both for fear of putting Persephone in the firing line of a divine squabble and for fear of what Zeus might do to the Underworld and the rest of the cosmos if his pride was snubbed by the revelation that he had caused the entire mess. Several characters discuss the possibility of war with Olympus if Zeus and/or Demeter learned the truth in the wrong way and lashed out, something Persephone only barely manages to sidestep during the postgame of Hades 1. We can see in Hades 2 exactly how ugly a war between the surface and the Underworld would be, so the silence around who Persephone is and why she came to the Underworld makes a great deal of sense. Unlike in the original story, here Persephone makes up the rules about Pomegranates and being bound to the Underworld as a way to fairly split her time between family members without incurring Demeter's wrath. In the original myth, by breaking the Xenia granted to her by a God Persephone invited herself to experience a curse related to his domain, in this case one that bound her to that domain. Here, she simply uses her favourite fruit as a way to trick her mother by exploiting Olympus' collective lack of knowledge about The Underworld and its divine customs. The end result is still the same, though. Persephone splits her time between her family in the Underworld and her family on Olympus, with Demeter's seasons corresponding to the time her daughter spends with her. In Hades 1 references to Demeter's more summery boons of plenty and bounty were few and far between, with only Rare Crop, Nourished Soul and a few scattered duos (Ice Wine and Stubborn Roots) referencing her ties to this part of her domain. In Hades 2, though, while her combat Boons are very much focused around bringing her wintery wrath to her enemies, she has far more boons related to bounty like Plentiful Forage, Rare Crop, Hearty Appetite, Cherished Heirloom, Natural Selection and of course Tropical Cyclone. This last one is especially notable in that it's the only actual reference to summer appearing in her moveset in either game. Who knows, if we ever get a third game, maybe we'll yet get to see more of her summery side in full force.
