And in this episode we know why, in the flashback during episode 2 where Frieren creates a field of flowers in a destroyed church, Eisen and Heiter's reaction is one of surprise, while Himmel's reaction is one of rememberance and admiration to that spell. He had seen it as a kid, and now, he was seeing it again.

And beyond that, we also know why he knew the language of flowers, shown with the scene in episode 14. Himmel, having enjoyed magic for the first time with a field of flowers, he wanted to know its symbolic meaning.

One of the especially beautiful things about Himmel's reaction to the field of flowers is where he says, "For the first time I thought magic was beautiful." We have to remember that magic has been a tool of War in the unending battle against Demons. Or practical uses like folk magic, making warm tea, etc. But a spell to create flowers is simply about the beauty of it, the joy of it, and no doubt that cemented Frieren in Himmel's mind and heart over any other.

I absolutely love this episode. I apologize if it's been said already, but another thing about Himmel and Frieren's first encounter, and their discussion later in life about it, is that when Himmel is saying 'I found magic Beautiful' and when we saw his expression as a child at that time, he was only looking directly at Frieren. ;_; brb crying again. But seriously, I absolutely adore this anime. My wife passed away at a very young age and we didn't have kids, so I connect in ways I couldn't imagine with both Himmel and Frieren. Thank you for reacting to this show Alex, and I hope you do the same for Season 2! You did a wonderful job the whole show :)

If Flamme's parents had not taught her the magic of creating flower gardens a thousand years ago, she would never have fallen in love with magic and would never have become a wizard. Had that happened, the story would have been quite different. This is a really well thought out script, and I was impressed.

I love the subtext of this episode. First, you've got that moment where Fern declares to Serie that she is Frieren's student. It's even more significant because just the previous evening, Richter asked if she was "Frieren's kid", and she couldn't bring herself to answer yes. Stark had to answer for her after an uncomfortably long silence. So her declaration during the final exam was her reaffirming something that she wasn't sure about mere hours ago. Even more significantly, we have the subtext around the flower spell. Putting together details from all across the season, we know that Flamme's grand plan for Frieren to defeat the demon king using mana hiding actually failed. The demon king saw through the ruse instantly, and Frieren was forced to use her last ditch "death stare" trick that we saw last episode. But the other spell Flamme taught Frieren, the spell to create a field of flowers, is also the spell that brought together the party, and Frieren said that if any of the 3 of them wasn't there, they couldn't have defeated the demon king. So Serie calls the spell useless, and Frieren's rebuttal boils down to saying that it's the most useful spell she ever learned, because it's the spell that defeated the demon king by bringing together the hero's party. Not to mention all the other benefits she's derived from that spell. It's literally "the power of friendship", but in a way that's entirely genuine and not cliché at all.

Well said! You haven’t missed a single detail. I don’t think I’ve realised how much it meant at the time I was watching the episode 🥲 all I could feel was joy seeing Frieren’s kindness towards the lost boy as well as feeling of helplessness and sadness towards the fact that Himmel is now gone… no other anime makes me feel this way. @DarwinAwardWinner
@DarwinAwardWinner 5 ай бұрын
@@ExpectoRidiculum You might already know this, but Violet Evergarden's music is composed by the same person as Frieren's: Evan Call. I like VE a lot, but I don't think it hits as consistently as Frieren does. There's also some interesting aspects of the VE anime as an adaptation of the source material. (IIRC the anime makes Violet the POV character, while the source material presents her mostly as a mysterious figure seen through other people's eyes.) Frieren is a really singular work, but I can recommend some other anime that are vaguely similar in some way or touch on similar/related themes. You could try Spice and Wolf (remake and original are both great), Dungeon Meshi, Snow White with the Red Hair, 7th Time Loop, Apothecary Diaries, or FMAB. I would also recommend Bocchi the Rock even though it's a very different show, because it has the same director and it's very fun.

The way Himmel referred to her as "she", as if he was speaking about some complete and random stranger, to when she cast the spell and it became "you" who cast it. He fell in love with her, right then and there. There's no doubt in my mind about it. And he held onto that love for his entire life. I will never not ship the two of them together, death be damned. This was a perfect, phenomenal episode.

This episode has so many great moments. In order... - Lawine is finally ready to accept the true nature of her bond with Kanne (I suspect because she was badly wounded, forcing her to think about what's really important to her). - Richter is still annoyed with everyone and everything, but when he fixes Fern's staff we see him soften and show a little more of a caring side. I honestly think the act of fixing the staff is what makes him feel better; it obviously takes a lot of concentration and care, and when he's doing that he's not in his own head about the way the exam turned out. I'm the same way - painting miniatures, or writing, or working on some other creative project gives my brain and hands something productive to do instead of just sitting there feeling agitated. I'm not good at traditional meditation, but getting into a state of sustained focus on a satisfying task accomplishes the same goal for me. That scene when he was fixing the staff was the moment I realized how closely I could identify with Richter. - I half expected Fern to go crawl into bed with Frieren when she came back to the inn and found her staff repaired, and the little flashback we got of her and Heiter was so sweet. - We hadn't had a Himmel flashback in a while, and the one we got was SO great. We saw that the spell that Flamme's parents taught her - the spell that she passed on to Frieren, that Frieren has used to touch so many hearts in little ways - is the spell that brought about the death of the Demon King. It's like you said: we never know how seemingly insignificant actions will carry forward into the future. As old as Serie is, it's honestly kind of weird that she doesn't see that, but maybe she's just never had any reason to look at the world that way. - Fern's instant reaction of "What? No" never gets any less funny to me. Come to think of it, it might be one of the few times in the show she speaks informally to anyone other than Stark. I wouldn't say I actually speak Japanese (yet) but I know enough to pick up certain things, and when she's pointing her staff at Lugner or Wirbel threateningly, her command of "Don't move" is phrased very politely. That's how formal she is, like ALL THE TIME. But in this scene with Serie she drops her trademark formality for a moment, and it just cracks me up for some reason.

I'm really happy that Lawine seem to be wanting expand their relationship into something more (or at least that's the vibe I'm getting). I think I know what you mean in terms of Richter. I used to watercolour paint but then I've noticed my thoughts would often wander into past and sad moments from the past and how I could've done something differently. Then I tried making leather armour and that have consumed me enough so my mind wasn't straying off to the bad things. Eventually, though, I've come to the conclusion that I could try KZbin 🙂and that, my friend, has absolutely consumed me and fills every moment of my life (for when I'm not working or doing house chores). It's like my own therapy and self discovery journey. I'm glad you have a nice hobby yourself. I have painted few miniatures with my friends in the past. It requires concentration and high attention to detail (and a very good brush! haha) I agree that it is strange that Serie doesn't see the impact a 'simple' spell had on so many lives. She is however, an extraordinary being herself. Perhaps she lacks understanding of many human emotions too or simply sees those as trivial. I don't know. I need to rewatch the whole season to let all the information sink in and notice more details, connect the missing dots.. Oh I absolutely loved how Fern had declined Serie's offer! but then, she was told by Frieren that she can speak her mind with Serie, afterall, I have a feeling Serie would have known what lingers on her mind. I'm actually surprised that Serie had offered her a position by her side. Was she really not aware of Fern's attachment and strong bond with Frieren? That might tell us more about Serie's perceptions of things, bonds and certain lack of understanding human emotions. Frieren is doing better in that matter but then why would the greatest, oldest and most powerful elf on Earth bother about human and their way of thinking and emotions? 🙂

@@ExpectoRidiculum That's very cool about the leatherworking - that's something I wanted to get into for a while but have never felt like I had adequate space for materials and such (at least not with all my miniature gaming stuff in the way). I DID recently modify my 20+ year old leather trenchcoat by adding a (fake) fur mantle to the shoulders and enjoyed that process, but I ended up just using heavy-duty snaps instead of any kind of stitching so it would be removable for cleaning purposes. The end result is a little like Wirbel's coat, except it's black with gray and white fur. 😁

The cinematography in the shots of Serie when talking to Frieren and Fern are really well done in how she interacts with the flowers. When talking to Frieren the perspective is looking down on the flowers because that's how she feels about Frieren, she thinks she's foolish to waste her potential how she has on chasing what she sees as useless spells instead of becoming more powerful and Flamme teaching her this way. When she meets Fern and sees for the first time since Flamme a human mage with a huge amount of potential she's caressing the flowers in excitement because Fern reminded her of meeting a young Flamme.

Imagine being a grandma whom collected money (Serie collects tomes), when you offer your grand kids gifts out of love instead of appreciation they say: "No need, we will obtain our own" This refusal is taken as ultimate insult 😅something akin to "They want none of your legacy" or inheritance The matter became more complicated when Frieren inherited Flamme seemingly "Useless" spell out of love~ (not a spell Serei taught but her blood parents)

I know that I may be writing this comment in the wrong section, but recently a thought occurred to me. The sword hilt on Kraft's statue is almost the same as the sword hilt of the heroes from the Sword Village. Besides, I think that Kraft and Serie have some common past, after all, they are both ancient elves, and Serie must have heard about Kraft's exploits. Methode, this tall, blonde sorceress, would be the priest Sein's ideal adventurer. Beautiful, onee-san.

hi, there's never a wrong place or time to discuss Frieren ☺ that's a very interesting thought! I wonder if somebody made a video about this.. I actually thought that Frieren and Kraft had a similar past since there isn't many elves around. They could have grown up in the same elven village, except that Frieren doesn't remember him (he is much older) but perhaps he remembers her or her parents? I think we will meet him again in the next season, otherwise the animators wouldn't have introduced him to us. Your theory is definitely right, though. Kraft's and Serie's paths must have crossed at least once since he was a great and well known hero once and he lived waaay longer than Frieren and Frieren met Serie so many times already. I'd be interested to find out more about it. Methode has many fans. She is strong, beautiful and powerful - yet, calm and composed. Real gem 🙂

@@ExpectoRidiculum If so, I will also write about other things that caught my eye, but I didn't write about them because I found this channel only 5 days ago and I decided that I would write only after the last episode, or when I get to the newest one. People often wonder why others are so willing to welcome Frieren and others. In times when there were no fast means of transport, especially in small communities in areas with difficult climatic conditions, the principle of hospitality prevailed and one had to welcome a guest into one's home, in return for which the guest would reciprocate by helping with the host's duties. On another note, Japanese authors who think they model their fantasy worlds on medieval Europe almost always make the same mistake. When describing the nobility, they show that they wore uniforms, decorations, and that every man (except the king) is clean-shaven. They confuse the Middle Ages with Victorian England. In medieval Europe, colorful clothes were worn, often to emphasize belonging to a specific family or order, and men without a beard were considered immature. It may seem like I'm complaining, but if someone loves anime and knows history, they'll have to get used to it. It was hard sometimes, but I got used to it.

Fern could never accept Series offer to become her student! Not because she is Frierens student, but because she is in practice Frierens "mother" as we have seen many times throughout the season! Without Fern, Frieren would sleep for long hours. Furthermore she couldn't leave Stark, as she has to watch over his discipline too, otherwise he'll drink juice again at night... ;-)

Everyone keeps saying that it was Frieren's fault that so many passed the 2nd test, both Serie and reactors, but the only thing Frieren actually did in the dungeon was defeat her own clone, which wouldn't even have been there to begin with if she wasn't there. It's exactly the same in the manga. I agree, Frieren was basically net zero in regards to everyone else passing. Serie is not too happy that Frieren has not fulfilled her maximum potential as a mage, and that's the reason why Serie wanted to train Fern, she knows that with Frieren she will probably live mostly in piece, and probably not fulfill her maximum potential, unfortunately for her she will have to let it go, at least with Fern. Maybe one day Frieren will study different fields after she's mastered mana suppression, in the meantime Serie will have to train mages that are more geared towards battle, when it's all said and done, Frieren is a researcher at heart.

Serie doesn't have too much care about mankind, but she still wouldn't let them get slaughtered by a demon for fun, so Fern can chill and study i think :D i loved this ep too, the mana talk was really nice, looking forward to the last one, the interviews with Denken and the others are pretty fun too :)

@@ExpectoRidiculum In a previous episode in the Dungeon, we saw that Fern was struggling with a lack of "passion", and she told Sense that she felt like she might have used it all up in her early years to fulfill her self promise to Heiter. It was through her journey with Frieren that she was finding a passion by proxy, enjoying the way that the things they were doing made Frieren happy, made her smile, and I think it is through her continued journey with Frieren that she WILL rediscover her own true passion. I sincerely doubt that Serie would be the one to unlock it. All the way back in Episode 2, while looking for the Blue Moon Weed Flowers, she said that she'd have learned any trade, it didn't have to be magic. Frieren objected to that and said she still choose magic and the scene after showed her making magic butterflies for Heiter; That is the magic she loves. Not the battle magic that Serie would teach her, but the magic that she shared with the person who arguably meant the world to her. She is more likely to find that as a student of Frieren. --- At least that is my interpretation. Its fun to think about these things!
