Thanks for the video. I picked up this exact motor this summer. It is hard to start and will not restart when hot. There have been many issues that I have found and fixed. Dirty and corroded grounds, coils missing ground jumper wire, emergency stop switch wires rubbed through causing a short to ground, and the stop switch on the tiller handle was defective. It still does not want to start. One plug is fouled, both have spark. The carb leaks fuel when choke is on and you turn it over. The carb was supposedly rebuilt and the engine was "inspected" this spring right before I bought it. I hope both cylinders have compression. This video has been beyond helpful, thank you.

It's probably the bowl seal. I found the one that came with my kit was too thin and it would still leak. I made a new one from silicon and posted a video on how to.

I too couldn’t get the main jet out of the bowl it was as if it was galled in there , one other note , mine did have a gasket between the carb and head . Thanks for the video 👍🏻 Carb is the same on my 95’ Mercury 25 hp. the only thing I had to do different is remove the starter to remove the inside carb mounting nut. I purchased a rebuild kit first $20 ( gaskets, plunger ect. ) followed your video on disassemble and cleaning, the issue was the float was full of fuel, purchased a new float $11 re assembled and BAM RUNS LIKE A MERCURY SHOULD 👍🏻🇺🇸

I have the same motor as a kicker on my boat. When placing the idle adjustment screw back into the carb, what I did was mounted the carb loosely and then placed the "C" part that goes on the adjustment knob together, placed it thru the hole in the cowling. There was no amount of pushing needed to get it to go as Crappie says. Once that was in, go the the left side of the motor (when you are behind the prop), press down the lever Crappie tells you when he is installing the knob. You will see how those two parts clip together, it is pretty obvious. This might help you. Awesome video!

I just did this on my 1999 20 hp Mercury, after watching the video I decided to check mine. This all stated with hard starts and then eventually no start. I found the ignition system to be finally dying. After all the repairs it still had carb issues also, the primer was stuck and wouldn’t depress when pulling the primer knob. Also I removed all the cover plates and bowl cleaned all the internal passages. I found your video very helpful the engines although different horse power they are identically built. Only issue after that was the switch box wiring was a shot in the dark for firing order. I missed it. Once that was correct it starts first pull now every time. Hope this helps others along with your help on the repair. Thanks

Thanks for the very helpful video! I just picked up a 9.9 and first day on the water it started bogging down at WOT and eventually would barely idle. Upon checking out the motor, I noticed the previous owner removed the fuel filter from it's housing, and I'm betting my carb is full of shit. Thank you so much for this video!!!! I’m a boater and enjoy learning about motors since I’m out on the water a lot! I can’t find a serial number for this new to me merc but it’s a 9.9 2 stroke and carb looks exactly like yours with fuel enrichment and all. I rebuilt my carburetor (it had some water and jelly like stuff in there) and still can’t get it running right. It starts if I spray a gas/oil mix directly into carb but idles way too high and then stalls unless I manually open the Choke butterfly. I’m ready to break down and buy a new carb. Any advice??? Would’ve bought a new carb instead of rebuild kit if I had opened carb first!
@CrappieCrushinTv
@CrappieCrushinTv 3 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you recently aquired this engine and problems to go with it. The jelly you speak of is usually caused by running fuel containing ethanol . I only run ethanol free anymore. If I was in your shoes I year it down again making sure all jets are cleared out for sure. If make make sure diaphragm pump and enrichment assembly are assembled correctly and working as they are suppose to. Make sure it so out back together correctly, make sure gasket are not upside down and are sealed correctly. If you are 200% sure of this and still have a problem then there is a chance the carb is out of adjustment. This is a whole nother ball game. Last bit certainly not least and should be checked first is the fuel hose from tank to engine. The older style break down and even begin to collapse. If berserking down it just plugged your carb up all over again. If it's collapsing then it's restricting fuel delivery.

It's always the carb!!! (unless some kid got a hold of it and ran pure gas, not mix like my idiot half brother does to chainsaws. I just rebuilt my 8hp carb, a gen before this one you have. The rebuild kit off Amazon for $20 did not have a sufficient bowl gasket so I made one from 1mm silicon. I noticed the main carb mount lower nut was so loose I could spin it off with my hand because that gasket had shrunk. If I'd have just tightened those nuts it probably would have run just fine but, in for a penny, in for a pound. I posted a video on making gaskets. Hey PS: replace the zip ties (plastic) with teflon ones as soon as you can. The plastic will get brittle fast and suddenly pop

Thx for video. I got the same motor. Is there suppose to be a gasket between the carb and the engine block? My carb rebuild kit comes with a gasket. The Mere Parts diagram also shows a gasket. Mine didn't have a gasket from previous owner. Perhaps that's why the motor ran funny. In your video, I didn't see a gasket either. The mating face on the engine block side has like a rubber seal around the openings. Any help would be great.

The new 9.9 appears to be flooding and won't start. Going to check the float but is there anything else that would cause this?
