The third would be such a painful perfection stereotype without his flaw of trying to see the best in others. Danzo is just a prominent example. Orochimaru is another. It's more interesting to have this character flaw in my opinion.

You ppl blame Hiruzen too much. For sure he let Danzo loose. But here Danzo was more needed person. Coz Danzo is evil but he is more needed person for strict decisions than Hiruzen. And Hiruzen was Hokage but he believed in walking with everyone. Dude has led Konoha through 2 wars and chose best Successor aka Minato over his favorite. At this point literally no one belive Uchiha knowing fully that some Uchiha has attacked leaf and responsible for kushina, Minato and many leaf villagers death. Just bcoz Uchiha got massacre taht doesn't mean reasoning shouldn't be considered. Dude was fuckin tired of Hokage and even chose successor. Tsunade has more great helpers than Hiruzen also. If not for Jiraya and Naruto. Tsunade won't even be able to lead village as like Hiruzen. And Hiruzen was always there for Village even with many losses all his life but Tsunade wasn't untill Naruto and Jiraya beat some sense into her. Just imagine the help Tsuande would have given to konoha in need of times. Hiruzen was like already tired of things and then was surrounded by greedy ppl.

Itachi's backstory is not filler though. It was not in the manga but it was in the novels, with Kishimoto's drawings and supervision. They are considered canon, that's why the anime adapted them.
