iTAK - A stripped-down version of ATAK for your iPhone

For those of you addicted to the iPhone, there is now a version of ATAK designed for you. Only available on TestFlight right now, it's a stripped-down version that doesn't allow for plug-ins, but still maintains basic functionality for routes, points, and zones.

They have to be on the same server. iTAK is basically just glorified mapping software without a server.

I think you have to be on a server for any of that to work. I haven't quite made it to the server work yet, but I may try out one of the free servers for now, just to see if I can push the utility a little more.

Awesome video! I've just left a comment on your Meshtastic video. I've just installed both apps, and noticed, that in the iTak App (Version 2.7) there is a section under Network. Network > Input/Output Managment > Mesh Network > "Enable Mesh Network Mode". (Allow multicast traffic). Is this a game changer and makes all your concerns obsolete?

I need to charge up my LORA boards and see if they are compatible. If so, it really would be a boon. However, given that this app was developed at DHS request, my guess is that the mesh network they intend it for is more of the Harris radio mesh network as opposed to civilian mesh.

I believe it requires a dedicated server. But to be honest, my knowledge on ZeroTier is minimal, so I’d have to find a really network-savvy guy to get an answer.

So, you can't add contacts in the way that you'd expect with other apps. You have to be on a server to add contacts and communicate with them, either through messaging or sending waypoints, etc. I'm currently experimenting with ArgusTAK, a cloud server, for an upcoming video. With ArgusTAK, every device that you add to the server automatically shows up as a contact in iTAK or ATAK (I'm trying both).

If you have someone who knows servers, you can use the free TAK Server software to set one up. If you don’t, I’d recommend something like ArgusTAK, which I covered in a separate video. If you’re prepping for off-grid, I’d look at the Meshtastic forwarder for ATAK.

Agreed, but I think it has a lot to do with how Apple locks down apps. They wouldn’t have the ability to do all the plugins that you can do on Android.
