An outstanding presentation on armor in the Italian army from World War 1 through World War 2. Mirko's knowledge is incredible. WW2TV is really breaking ground by giving historians from all the countries involved in World War 2 a platform to share their countries stories from the war!

So glad to see two show I support together., praise to Paul giving space to new prospectives. Mirko is doing an outstanding work on his channel , especially considering italian attitude vs ourselves and our military history. He mythbusted a lot of campaigns , very competent historian , very detailed in wide military contemporary history. Hope to see him again here...

This was an amazing presentation. To make the point of the presentation, after Gabr al Ahmar in August 1941, Col Aresca, the commander of the Italian Medium Tank Brigade (M11/39) wrote Bergonzoli, describing his combined arms approach to the Victory, using armor, Bersaglieri, artillery and ATG's in the attack. They were beginning to work on it when the Matilda entered the fray. An Italian sent me documents about this. Aresca survived the war and continued to serve in the tank corps.

Paul/Mirko. Thanks for another great presentation. This has left me feeling great sadness for the young Italian tankers who went to war to serve their country under such conditions. I would repeat that I am glad my Italian ancestors did not succeed during WW2 but to send young men to their deaths with minimal training is unforgivable. I look forward to watch the final presentation on Italy in WW2 week! Bob

I would be glad to see a special about the ARMIR, the Italian Army in Russia. My grandfather served as artillery servant of the Alpini corp. We found his body five or six years ago in a mass graveyard in Russia.

In Von Mellethin's book Panzer Battles He spoke of the fighting spirit of the Italian soldiers but he said that the officers were not very good and treated their men poorly. He also stated that credit had to be given to the soldiers who had to fight with outdated weapons and equipment. So while true many German Officers thought poorly of the Italian soldiers they did not have the full picture like those who fought with the Italians in the Afrika Korps. Excellent Session ! Thank you Mirko for Sharing your expertise in this little known part of Italy and understanding their concept or lack of in regards to Armored Warfare

Something out of the ordinary, am i biased? I don't think, one of the most valid and authoritative Historians in military historiography, as good and prepared as few, listening to him is like attending an academic lesson, fantastic. Cassino Mirko? maybe, she would be beautiful treated by you, certain to hear and see things unknown to most people.

Molto Interassante Mirko! Thank you Paul for having such a fine historian on to tell us of the Italian side of WWII. I always have wondered why the Italian tankers had the bravery to climb into their vehicles and go into combat despite knowing of their deficiencies. Soldatos coraggioso!!

I find all WW2TV presentations to be incredibly enlightening and this one does not disappoint in that respect. So much of doctrine, equipment, etc, are carry overs from WW1 experiences that I would like to see a similar channel about WW1. Perhaps it could be called WW1TV! I know there are many documentaries on WW1, but not with this format of having actual historians discuss the different aspects. Any takers?

Italian Army Doctrine is called," War of Rapid Decision " This was originally developed by Rudolpho Graziano. He developed this mobile armoured warfare during Absynnia campaign

Quick overview important battles in Libya worth noting, Battle of Fort Capuzzo Col Davazo did not use the new doctorine British captured Fort Cappuzzo. August 5 I believe the Maletti group utilized the new doctrine was victorious against the British forces in Libya Operation E September 13 Utilzing the new doctorine formations. 1 formation percided along the coast line, and The Malleti would Flank the British at Sidi Barrani . Problems were both the Malleti and the Libyan division could not Commit to the new doctorine. War of Rapid decision. Graziani was forced to re organize the Italian army. And proceeded with old style of attack formation to capture Sidi Barrani.

Sorry to have missed this live. What was Italian armoured doctrine in North Africa in regards to night leaguers? Did they predominately stay on the battlefield? (Like the Germans) Or withdraw a distance to replenish and re-supply? Like the British?

It Italian military’s problem could be pinpointed to strategic and logistical issues. The idiots at the top had a pride that the logistics at the bottom couldn’t support. The actual line soldiers were excellent - they were just given out of date shit to work with and no food or fuel.

The issue with Italy in WW2 is manifold, but mainly around the country not being prepared for this war, hence underperforming compared to germany and then the swapping sides which was just showing that italy was not even a united country...
