Italian is a Romance language of the Indo-European language family that evolved from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire. Together with Sardinian, Italian is the least divergent language from Latin. Spoken by about 85 million people (2022), Italian is an official language in Italy, Switzerland (Ticino and the Grisons), San Marino, and Vatican City. It has an official minority status in western Istria (Croatia and Slovenia).
Corsican is a Romance language constituted by the continuum of the Italo-Romance dialects spoken on the Mediterranean island of Corsica (France) and on the northern end of the island of Sardinia (Italy). Corsican is related to the Tuscan varieties from the Italian peninsula, and therefore also to the Florentine-based standard Italian.

Both Corsican and standard Italian are devided from Medieval Tuscany dialect if I remember correctly. That’s why they are similar

@@Joshayne Corsica has long been a possession of the Republic of Pisa. There were many Tuscans who emigrated there. Even today lucchese (Who comes from Lucca) is in Corsican a derogatory synonym of Tuscan.

What people do not realise is that Corsican is closer to standard Italian than most of the dialects spoken in Italy. For example I am from Milan and our dialect is heavily influenced by Occitan, it is way more different to Standard Italian than Corsican which is part of the Tuscan dialects

This must be northern Corsican - which is influence by Tuscan. Southern Corsican has features that make it look and sound similar to Sicilian!

Question: Do modern Corsicans feel Italian or at least connected in a way to Italy? I mean the island was kinda sold to France by the monarchy at the time so if that didn't happen it would have probably been part of Italy today. Interesting how similar it is to standard Italian btw.

It's just a coincidence, even in Sardinian, Romanian, Salentinian and many median Italian dialects (like Ternano) have words that end in U

There should be a video on the corsica vengeance law. I mean in the count of monte cristo, Giovanni Bertuccio (his Italian steward/butler) , says that in corsica, if someone refused to help you or offended you in eney way it was basically a law to go after that person and "take care of them ". (Bertuccio used to be a smuggler, thief, and attempted assassin before he became a servant).

@@michelesanpietro3013 Non è logico, in queste cose 1+1 non fa 2, bisogna vedere i fatti storici. La Corsica si è riempita di toscani ed è sempre stata sotto Stati italiani tranne che per gli ultimi 200 anni. È stata letteralmente colonizzata. Nell'area mediana invece a eccezione di Roma (che infatti ha un dialetto di facile comprensione) tutti gli altri non hanno subito una colonizzazione simile. Prova a leggere testi in perugino o reatino, ti renderai da solo conto che ci sono differenze anche qua. Non a caso i linguisti sono certi che il corso sia un dialetto toscano, mentre è meno certa la classificazione dell'area mediana. Ti faccio degli esempi: L gatto s'apatollava ta la murigge a vèrnio de la chèsa. Mamma curre ch' me so sbirè na garogna! Je l'he arcordèt tal tu fio de rechè l pèno? Sono tre frasi semplici senza termini gergali o relativi a mansioni/azioni particolari, non penso che siano così immediate. Il corso ad esempio non ha così tante differenze fonetiche, al massimo la O può essere U oppure nel corso del sud LL diventa DD, ma insomma non sono cose così assurde. Dove hai trovato tante differenze lessicali tra corso e italiano? Onestamente io raramente mi sono imbattuto in parole nuove.

@@RVG_ Un toscano e un corso possono parlare tra loro senza difficoltà, già tanto basta. Con un siciliano (vero) invece è difficile capirsi chiaramente. Ascoltandolo senza essere informati sicuramente le prime cose che balzano sono le U finali, gli articoli, i verbi coniugati come in alcuni dialetti del Centro Italia e l'intonazione particolare. Le prime cose però non sono un ostacolo particolarmente grande e l'intonazione "strana" è data più che altro dal francese che i corsi sono obbligati a parlare. Se noti la pronuncia è molto simile, non ci sono suoni particolari come al nord o al sud. Come detto prima le U e le DD possono farlo sembrare siciliano, ma il siciliano ha tanti grecismi, arabismi, ecc. Una grammatica diversa da quella italiana, una fonetica diversa. Secondo me il corso assomiglia tanto a qualche dialetto umbro-sabino.

Per un italofono che non conosce il siciliano sembrerebbe vero, l’accento lo ricorda effettivamente molto ma a ben vedere, lessico e grammatica sono chiaramente del gruppo toscano-corso-gallurese, a cui appartiene anche l’italiano dato che è un’evoluzione colta e letteraria del fiorentino medievale.

Corsica was part of Italy, then about 15 months before Napoleon was born, France bought off the island from the Italian. Also Napoleons ancestors are Italian.

Sono calabrese, della Calabria meridionale, laddove si parla un dialetto di tipo siciliano. Non immaginavo, senza aver fatto alcuno sforzo, di essere bilingue. Parlo e capisco benissimo corso e calabrese. Il corso e' certo un dialetto italiano che non ha avuto modo di evolversi nell'italiano standard. Sarei curioso di sapere se un corso in Italia utilizza il suo dialetto e se comprende la sua lingua madre. L'italiano.

I corsi anziani capiscono benissimo la maggior parte dei dialetti italiani dalla liguria in giù I giovani dipende La lingua corsa è nata dall' incontro tra la parlata di Colonna il bel messere (simile al reatino e ai dialetti laziali di prima della toscanizzazione voluta dai papi) con i dialetti apuani e versiliesi. Questo intorno all' anno mille Successivamente ci sono stati altri apporti tra cui sicuramente dialetti come il Reggino anche se mancano testimonianze scritte. Interessante il brocciu che è una ricotta rinforzata con latte fresco che ritroviamo pure in Calabria. Poi sono arrivati i genovesi e in fine i francesi. Da non dimenticare i rapporti con Roma in oarticolare Trastevere che era 90% abitato da corsi. In altre parole c'è quasi tutta l'Italia dentro la lingua corsa
