I'm a 4th generation Aussie and a 72 year old grandmother and I found your channel by chance recently. I've watched many videos of yours now, but still have a lot of catching up to do! I love your enthusiasm and interest wherever you travel. I'm thrilled you are enjoying magnificent Melbourne where I've always lived. However, I also love Germany and Ireland. Both exceptionally beautiful countries. I was in Ireland in April (2nd visit) but my first time in Tipperary looking into my heritage. Anyway, keep having fun and safe travels. P.S. Carlton (Lygon St) is very busy in the evenings with lots of atmosphere. The Botanical Gardens are nice (and free). You could also take a ferry from Southbank or a train from Flinders Street Station to Williamstown. I'm sure you would like the old architecture in that suburb.

If you liked the gardens in Carlton, the Botanical Gardens next to the Yarra River will blow you away. A green paradise with tall modern skyscrapers in the background.

If you guys are interested in 150+ year old architecture you might take a day trip to Ballarat, a regional city to Melbourne’s west which was the centre of our gold rush in the mid 1800s. Over in Western Australia just south of Perth is Freemantle which is rich in old times character .As for the Italian influence in Melbourne, there was a big influx of Italians after WW11. Many came to Australia because we needed workers and they were initially put to work building the massive Snowy River Scheme.

Carlton is one of the inner suburbs that has terrible parking so I wasn't surprised to hear you say that lol. But, the rest of the place makes up for it. It does get very very busy at night time. It was the Italians that first brought over their coffee machines so they are really behind the Melbourne coffee expansion. I used to be a tour guide for the Royal Exhibition Building. It's a wonderful building with an amazing history. Australia's federal parliament was officially opened inside that building in 1901. It's been used for a wide variety of things since then.

Rathdowne Street, which parallels Lygon St and runs along the Carlton Gardens, is one of my favourite suburban streets in Melbourne. The exhibition building you looked at was home to the first Australian Parliament before it moved to Canberra.

The opening of Federal parliament happened there, but it's home was in the Victorian parliament house on Spring street. It was the Victorian parliament that actually used the exhibition building for that time, and I've heard they weren't that happy about being moved there but it was the PM Barton's choice.

Happy memories of my childhood, some things have changed. My grandparents and my mother lived in Carlton off Lygon St. I loved sleeping over at Nana & Pa’s, shopping in Carlton, visiting their friends, or Nan taking me into the city. So close to the city, but also lots of gardens and a lovely atmosphere. Nan was born in 1886 and lived till age 92. A beautiful Nan & Pa who took us out everywhere around Carlton and beyond 💞

As a local, Brunetti, is my preferred cake and coffee place. They have a few branches but Carlton is the OG. They have one in Flinders Lane in the city, near Swanton St

Alot of the Italians came to Australia as refugees at the end of WW2. Carlton is where the coffee culture began in Australia.in the 1950's and 1960's. Lygon St is famous for its restaurants. There is a French biscuit called a madeleine. The best pizza restaurant is in the nearby suburb of Brunswick. The owner and chef won the world's best pizza in an Interntional competition in Rome against over 600 chefs from around the world. He only uses the best ingredients imported from Italy.

At the end of the war many of them didn't want to return to Italy and stayed here and got employment on farms or moved to towns to find work. I went to primary school with kids from Germany and Poland whose homes were destroyed in the war.

Loving the vlogs so far checking out some of the iconic streets/suburbs. Lygon street isnt what it used to be, known as the little Italy but its died down since its hay day, huge Italian migration after the wars which helped fuel our cafe culture. We also have the largest greek population in the world outside of Greece!

Find time to get out of the city if you can to do some day trips to see places like Mt Dandenong, Warburton, Mt Donna Buang, Healesville Samctuary, Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island.

One of my favourite things about visiting the city is the contrast between the old and the ultra modern buildings. Oh - definitely check out the botanic gardens (and ACMI and Ian potter gallery anddddd national gallery. All near each other)

A lot of people do exams at the exhibition building. If you want a good place for dinner, Papa Ginos is incredible. The owners are the same people that founded it way back when, and theyve just announced theyre gonna sell it soon. Its one of the more famous restaurants on Lygon. The melbourne museum IMAX isnt really your normal cinema, they do mostly nature related documentary films, though they do have a few showings of the really big movies. Funnily enough, the main cinema in carlton is the Nova, which was next to brunettis inside that little shopping center. It is still a bit hipster, and the cinema is smaller. Theres a few big cinemas in the city that people would usually go to. Also theres no x is espresso :p Aaaaaand I believe the most Australian dessert is the Vanilla slice. Everywhere in australia you can find them in cafes, and the more regional, the better they seem to be. If youve never had one, I highly recommend.

Used to see an arthouse movie and then go across Lygon Street to grab a bite at Tiamo, best cheap but great, Italian restaurant in the precinct. Then there was Twins, best late night 24 hour cafe, just a few doors away on the corner. Glad you went to Brunetti's, it's an icon, but they were just a little shop in Faraday Street serving cakes over the counter and their new place looks a little like an exclusive food court.

There's another Brunetti on Flinders Lane if you need a Brunetti fix closer to the CBD :) Have you been to Phillip Island, the Dandenong Ranges or Port Melbourne? You've done so much in such a short time! There are a lot of good Middle Eastern restaurants on Lygon St too - previously there were more Italian restaurants.

Very nice video. Now that you have checked out the Italian area in melb, please check out the Greek area in Oakleigh. Both Lygon street and okalegh have nice resturants and cafe shops. If you go to Oakleigh please check out Nikos cakes shop. It's really nice. Also if you want to try a Greek type of cold coffee please try Freddo Cappuccino or Freddo Espresso.

Carlton I was at a hotel their for 3 day s right next to lygon street how ever it's spelt. It's most popular Italian street in Melbourne I whent their in 80 s but not been their again till.start of this year. Lots of university people s their was their for the big. Lego convention. At exabitjon building just up the block .not to far from Lygon street is lovely I had the yummy pizza 😊 🍕 it's good to not far from middle of the city. Buy tram lots of electric bike delivery s .going up and down the road non stop. That part s around Lygon seem so relaxing. Hotel I stayed at was nice .
