Netherlands has decided and their representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is Joost Klein with his song " Europapa ", an up-beat disco song with an amazing 2000's electro flavour.

The song is typical of the Netherlands. It is in Dutch, a music genre, the music video features mills and stunning Dutch landscapes. Eurovision is an emotional affair for Joost. As a child, he watched it together with his parents. "Parents, one day I'm going to be on Eurovision stage" and he made it. Unfortunately, his parents died when he was a child. This song is dedicated to his late father. That's why it's called EUROPAPA. The part in the song “I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone. I'm in Italy, but I still feel the pain, etc.", I feel it's directed at his parents... Joost loved his parents and still does. His lyrics are mostly very deep, but the melody is happy, danceable and the clips of his song are presented in a fun way. I'm so proud of him.

@@YourCacnea When you pay attention to the visuals and lyrics in the video, in almost every scene you can see/hear the duality of his pain under all the happiness which tears him apart. At the hardcore/gabber drop he lets it all go, the last 20 seconds is the final hommage to his parents to tell them he is getting ready for a new chapter of his live.

This is a really good explanation (I'm Dutch). The many associations in the lyrics make it difficult to translate it (even for me, and I'm a translator) and I feel you explained it well. Joost lost both his parents when he was 13 years old and this song - "Eurodad" - shows very well how loss feels and to walk around with all that grief.

@@lwgg742 Thank you. I've been listening to Joost for a while now, so I assumed what his song would be about. He's done about two songs in the past that are about his parents, and there's little mention of them in some of the others. The love for them is strong. Honestly, I have to translate every song of his because I don't understand Dutch or German at all and I'm thinking about his lyrics. He is an interesting and very creative artist.

Joost is a master in his lyrics and confusing people (in a good way). This song is both a tribute to his parents that passed away, as well as to the Europe he loves for its diversity, quirkiness and freedom. I believe that every European citizen can (or should) relate to this, especially in these times where the world seems to be on fire.

I think Joost here means the second, but I would be lying if I'd say our joint-European diversity came from all of us staying just within our borders. The last few years, we have been focusing more on differences and closing borders than to share our common European background and heritage.

Heyhey! Dutchie here with some info/translation for who wants it 😊 The ending is indeed part of the song, the song isn’t just a reference to hardstyle and gabber (which has true Dutch roots) but in an interview Joost said that the song is also in honor to his father who passed. What he says roughly translates to ‘At the end of the day we’re all just people, my father used to tell me it’s a world without grenzen (grenzen, means borders but it also translates to limitations). I miss you everyday is what I quietly whisper, see dad? In the end I always listened’ referring to the advice he gave him. He always told his parents who both passed he wanted to go to Eurovision and now he made it, taking after his fathers advice not to feel limited since the world is beyond limitation if you’re willing to work hard for it.

For me, this is the winner of Eurovision 2024. This song is a masterpiece. The meaning and message is beautiful. Europapa is Eurodad. An ode to his dad. Wjrn he was 12 years old, his dad passed away with cancer. A year later his mother also passed away. There are no borders, no limit was the message of his father, go and explore the Europe and the world. The fire in the song means he will let go of the pain of not having his parents and start a new chapter in his life. 12 points for The Netherlands. 🎉

This song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself. After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that. Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did.

As a professional jazzphotographer I like only “real/good music. Joost his music is “not my cup of tea” but after seeing this video on Dutch television by Lubach, he changed for me as a Dutch Idiot to a international hero. Yes this song is related to his dad and parents and at the end the happy song changed in a sad ending instead a happy ending. That ending of the burning wood-house makes it to a winning song, because he is not allowed to make a political statement, indirectly without words he is showing the world that Europe is on fire. The war between Russia and Ukraine and the war in Israel and Hamas is a fact not mentioned but every human good working brain can make his own conclusion. Thanks Joost from the Netherlands to be important. Showing yourself in another world and “performing “ out of your comfort zone you can be successful, happy and stimulating others. Something i haven't seen people mention that is really easy for dutch people to notice, but can definetly be missed when you're not a dutch speaker, is that "papa" or "pa" means Dad. It's literally him going "europa-dad, or euro-dad". Anyways will always cry at the end i've heard it 5 times already... :p

You do realise that papa means the same in more languages and that it sounds like this to everyone right? And in English it's called 'Europe' and not 'Europa'.
@annahunen841

@@dennisengelen2517 In dutch it's called europa. The song is mainly in dutch. it's by a dutch artist. Yes, I know that papa means the same in more languages. I don't care that it's called europe in english. get over yourself m8

As a Dutch person, don't worry I also didn't catch on to the deeper meaning of it during my first listen! But if you pay close attention and listen a few times you can notice the tinge of a bitter taste. His music is surprisingly deep for the fun vibe it has. But yeah, I do hope the translation will be on-screen for non-dutch speaking people cause the lyrics add so much

At the same time, the ending next to the interpretation of the personal story of the singer, the ending also felt like commentary against all the polarisation we are dealing with since (and during) the pandemic. In Europe but also worldwide.

No it's quite a jump if you didn't know his background before you listen to the song. The burning of the photo and the house is a learned coping mechanism of "letting go" when he got help from a psychologist. He lost his parents at a young age.. His mother first and his father later.. This song is a way to honor and remember his parents but especially his father. They used to watch the Eurovisie Songfestival together and he told his dad he wanted to be on that stage later in life... And now he will be!

His parents died when he was 12, father of cancer, mother of a cardiac arrest, and he had been making youtube video's when he was 10. he started making music for fun, and now he made it to Eurovision. his dad told him it was a world without borders and he could do everything he wanted, and now he said that he has listened to his dad because he is in Eurovision.
