Darwin! by Banco (72) is considered by italians to be the finest prog album to come out of Italy and is indeed the most daring of all. A special mention goes to Banco's two instrumental album from the late 70s: Garofano Rosso (76) and '...di Terra' (78), some of the most creative and original instrumental albums of all time and also the least acknoledged.

I'm very happy you know them :) Since you like Oregon, I bet you like Aktuala. If you don't (but I'm pretty sure you do) their first self-titled album is a masterpiece. Just other few reccomendations (hoping not to bore you): Lucio Battisti released one of the finest album of the 70's, it's called "Anima Latina" and in my opinion that album is just as good as some most acclaimed album as "Rock Bottom." I

Bernardo Lanzetti was in PFM,now he fronts his own band CCLR another great Italian prog band. Latte e miel=Milk and honey.A great band!I have all of their album is a cd box set put out a few years ago,it features both versions of Papillon,english and italian. Patrick Moraz was in Mianhorse,Refuge and of course Yes and the Moodies. Le Orme just put out new album with only drummer Michi DeiRossi as original member.Sadly bassist singer Aldo left.:(

Area are a group that I really love so much (and among the others I'm particularly fond of the album "1978 gli dèi se ne vanno, gli arrabbiati restano!" ["1978 the gods leave, the angry stay!"]). A hug ^^

I've been a fan of British and American prog rock for decades, and KNEW that there was a whole world of Italian prog rock out there, but never explored it, even though posso parlare italiano abbastanza bene! Thank you very much for this introduction to the key artists. I made a written list from this video, have listened to each one, and am now exploring the other albums of those artists and other artists! All I can say is MOLTO GRAZIE!

Excellent! The Italians were amazing in the prog scene, I got completely hooked around '95 when all those CD reissues started coming out. Whenever I see any on vinyl auctions now, I'm on it - with fingers crossed, originals goes for huge money as we all know. A lot of beautiful reissues out there too, I recently got the Vinyl Magic reissue of De De Lind's (too long title to even try....LOL!) one and only album. Killer stuff! Lucio Battisti died in 1998. He stopped playing live shows and giving interviews in the late 70s. No one ever saw him for the last 20 years of his life. He was a political supporter of MSI (the italian fascist party). Riverberi played in Rondò Veneziano (classical music, not prog). YS is considered one of the masterpieces of Italian progressive. Someday we should check if some fo those albums are original copies, they may be extremely valuable.

Inspiring video again. I've bought the reissue of latte e miele (milk and honey) after your recommendation a few months ago and I?m not disappointed, it's smooth and sweet as honey indeed! Osanna!! dope, look originals press no? Love PFM!! I have only 2 by them (l'isola + photos), wish I had more of course. If you find a cheap 'cook live' I'm all in! I love that Reverberi/I think Cecarelli is french in fact, I saw him in concert this summer/ Area kick ass, I have 3lps. You rock!!!

Great discourse RE difference between opinion of someone's music versus an opinion and respect for the person. I, too, feel that to criticize one's music, compositional or instrumental skills is never intended to be extrapolated to include or cast aspersions to the person him/herself. People are trying hard and some are just not blessed with the natural abilities of others. We each have our gifts and strengths. I admire and love people. Not all of us can produce masterpieces of art.

I recently found PFM's House's Of Ghosts for 98 cents... so excellent, and im definitely on the lookout for the other albums now especially the live one. This is a great eye opener Dereck,ah ha that must be where Ben Costello spotted your PFM LP.I went out with an Italian girl over a decade ago and she never turned me onto these bands, for years all I've Known of Italian prog was Goblin through their Argento soundtracks

darkdubh Goblin also released a couple of non-soundtrack albums. Seek out "Roller". Also, before they were known as Goblin, they were called Cherry Five, and their sound was very reminiscent of early Yes.

Ys is indeed one of the best italian albums.The 2000 version of the band only features Gianni Leone as original member he was singer keyboardist.He did release a very good solo album under name of Leo Nero.It sounds a lot like Il Balletto di bronzo.

I also recommend you to check the first three Franco Battiato albums: "Fetus", "Pollution" and "Sulle corde di Aries". He was one of the first (maybe the first) using a VCS-3 synth in Italian music. Another great record is "Aria" by singer Alan Sorrenti, prog-folk-mediterranean music with Jean-Luc Ponty's violin on the omonimous suite. There's a lot of other stuff but these are the ones that came to my mind :)

I think I mentioned to you about getting into some of these Italian prog albums? I am going to be studying this video quite a few times: Do you think Corte dei Miracoli sounds a little like Yes? Or is that a stupid question because it is almost like saying that all prog bands sound like Yes? {I am sharing a cup of coffee with you as I write.} You are right about Le Orme.They played in the Progfest in LA in 1997. There is an Italian club near where I was born called The Marconi Club. {1 of 2}
