Italian anthem's lyrics composer, Goffredo Mameli, died in 1849 at the very young age of 21 fighting on an actual battlefield for freedom and democracy, against the brutal repression of the Ancien Regime, back in the tumultuous age of democratic values' spreading in Europe, becoming a symbol of political passion and sacrifice for the common good. His grave is one of the most visited in the central monumental cemetery of Rome. Italians started to sing their anthem with their hands on their hearts only in 1999 when the Italian President publicly declared: "this is our anthem, stop with bullshits, I expect you to sing it at attention and with your hand on your heart". This anthem became the official anthem only in 2018 after 70 years of disputes and probably only because that declaration.

You can only disrespect an other nation's anthem if you don't understand the importance of an anthem to a people. In short, the english themselves don't care about their own anthem as much as the Italians care about theirs, and that's also why the Italians always belt their anthem while the english only do so when they are hyped, drunk or high... It's because 'Il canto degli Italiani' is a much deeper song, the English anthem is just a boring song about an outdated monarchy, while the Italian anthem discusses Italy's past hardships and how they've overcome them, it's about how Italians have always been handed the short end of the stick In Europe and how "Italy has awaken" as it states is the anthem.

Growing up In school my teacher always told all the students “wherever u r weather in school corridor,classroom,hall, playing field or outside of school stand still n respect the national anthem of any country it’s not necessary that this has to b ur national anthem RESPECT ALL NATIONAL ANTHEMS.” N once me n my friend was punished for running to class while national anthem was played. Italy's anthem is a cry for unity and liberty of the country against invasors and anyone who'd ever want to divide us again, the young composer wrote "we're ready to die for Italy" and did just that few time later in war again Austria (the oppressor referred in his song) Curiosity: Italy and Poland's anthems are the only two in the world to name each others in their lyrics :) love from Italy ❤️

Not all European anthems are about a proud victorious nation. The Dutch anthem isn't even about the Netherlands. It's a personal song of Wilhem of Orange (founder of our country) which became our anthem since we had nothing better, lol. These are the lyrics of our anthem; Wilhelm of Nassau, I am of German blood. Loyal to the fatherland I stay until my death. The prince of Orange, I am without fear. I have always honoured the king of Spain. I wish we had a nice, cheerful anthem like Italy.

In Italy people have often tried to change ours in favor of others that had a more classical style but we're too enamoured with this one and its lyrics to really take others in consideration so after years of only using it as a de facto anthem it officially became by law the anthem of Italy only in 2017. luckily lol because i love it

@@areswalker5647 That's interesting it's only been a short while your anthem has been the official one. Melodically it's one of the most recognizable anthems I know off. There have been proposals in the past to change ours. Nearly everyone believes, while it made sense in the past, our anthem doesn't fit our country anymore. At least lyrically. The problem though, is that our country is somewhat too divided to come up with a new one. What are we going to sing about? Our great nation? How we are an open and tolerant country? Our culture? Those are subjects that polarize our country, with people who think we are a nice little, open country with a lovely culture and past in the arts and sciences. And people who completely disagree, who say our past is too racist and violent to be positive about and that there's not much of a definable Dutch culture in the present. Also nationalism is frowned upon, which makes it harder to write a positive song about our nation. Changing our anthem into anything, would really upset one of both sides so we kinda stick with what we have; an anthem nobody likes. Which in a way is typically Dutch, so maybe it's a fitting one after all. 😅

England fan here. Congratulations to Italy, you outplayed us on Sunday night, overall you thoroughly deserved the victory. It seems like the whole world is enjoying bashing England after Euro 2020, some of which is deserved, but I would like to add my perspective on a few points: 1) The vast majority of English people and England fans are not thugs, hooligans or racists. Most of us just wanted to support our national team in a final, something that most English people have never experienced. 2) The booing of other countries national anthems by some fans was disrespectful and completely wrong. Although I was part of the majority who would never disrespect another sovereign nation in this way, I can only apologise for the behaviour of this minority of idiots. 3) I've read a lot about how arrogant the English are. I do not believe this is true at all. We know we are nowhere near as strong historically as countries like Italy, France, Germany, Brazil etc. We are used to losing against our closest rivals, so we joke about it often. We laugh about how bad we are at penalties, how we can never win a semifinal etc. It was hugely entertaining for our nation to forget about all the political rubbish of Brexit etc, pushed COVID out of our conscious for just a second, and hope that, just perhaps, our young team could do something special... And they did. Regardless of how bad our reputation is in Europe right now, this England team did wonders in uniting this country. Many people of minority backgrounds have felt more comfortable supporting England than ever before, and the message of this team has been an inclusive one. I am so happy that we could enjoy a month of great football after such a crap year. 4) We are not a nation of idiots. We have our problems, many of which were displayed publicly on Sunday, but I know we are not alone in this. London is one of the most diverse and multicultural cities on earth. Wherever you are from, whatever religion, or sexuality, identity etc you will be welcome here. Please do not allow the actions of a nosey minority taint your opinion of us all. Italy deserved to win. You were better than us and I congratulate you. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇹
