Territory in the modern area of Bari was inhabited by about 3 thousand years ago. The city was first Greek and then Roman colony. Thanks to trade with neighbouring countries and with the cities in the country, he quickly grew and developed. Today, Bari is a major seaport and an important commercial and industrial center.
Being a seaport facing East, Bari appeared quite early Christianity. According to local legend, preached here by St. Peter.
Bari consists of two parts, allocated Corso Vittorio Emanuele: the old city with its medieval winding streets and the new, which began its development after 1820, the main feature of which are the straight streets and perfectly round square. The old town kept the old layout, typical of medieval towns. There are no buildings above two floors.
The main attractions are the Norman castle, Cathedral of San Sabino and the Basilica of Saint Nicholas.
The Norman castle is located on the outskirts of the old town. This magnificent building was founded in 1131 by Roger the Norman. In the aftermath the castle was partially destroyed, and the 13th century, restored and enlarged by Frederick the Second, who turned the castle into a powerful fortification for protection against attack from sea and from land. Later the castle underwent another renovation and expansion in the 16th century, but after the fall of the Bourbon dynasty, the castle fell into disrepair and was used as an army barracks and a prison.
The Cathedral of San Sabino was built in 1178 the Foundation of a Byzantine Church, destroyed in 1156 by William the Bad. The Cathedral was built in Romanesque style, on the orders of the Archbishop of Rainaldo, later the Cathedral survived art restoration in the 18th century and architectural restoration in 1950.
One of the main shrines of Christendom - the Basilica of Saint Nicholas (1087 g). Here are crying the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which in 1087 were secretly taken from Myra and since then kept in this Church, turning it into one of the centers of Orthodoxy.
Since 1969 the Orthodox are entitled to serve in the crypt of the Basilica. Once a week (on Thursdays) in the main room of the temple performed the Liturgy "in the Byzantine-Russian rite". During worship on Thursday, the iron bars opened, after everyone through a special window in the marble throne can venerate the relics.
