@@lexkanyima2195 Well you saw that first goal Czechoslovakia scored in the first match? His reactions were just not quick enough. Also in the 1983 Champions Cup final against HSV the only goal seemed possible to keep for Zoff - just too old. Already the qualifying for the 1982 world cup tournament was not very convincing by loosing against Denmark (considered to be weak at that time) a draw against Greece and a only 1-0 against Luxemburg at home. And then three drews against Poland, Peru and Cameroon was just enough to qualify to the second group stage (Italy 3 Pts, 2-2, Cameroon 3Pts, 1-1). Then the extremely unfair, but winning game against Argentina, and then the sensational 3-2 against the Brasilians that won every game until then.

The Euro84 qualifying was a transitional period for the Italian team. Many players were on their last legs and wouldn't be around for WC86. Oriali and Zoff finished in 83/84 and Rossi and Tardelli declined considerably and stayed on the subs bench in WC86 without getting any games. This doesn't of course excuse their poor performances. They should've at least finished second in the group even if it still meant not getting through.

People must remember that Italy suffered from a World Cup hangover, the problem therein lies that they hung onto older players for too long afterwards, they lacked the desire and hunger and the legs to keep up. Sweden were probably the best non qualifying side in Europe during the 1980's. They were far too physically strong for the slower, older Italian players. Italy had not played a more physical side up until then. Too many Italian players living off past reputations from Spain.

As an Italian I can only say Italy took their opponents in this Euro qualifying far too lightly and were rightly punished. The same team that beat Brazil, Argentina, Poland and Germany could barely manage a draw against Cyprus. Zoff retired in 1983 midway through the qualifying rounds and his replacement Galli, who also went to Mexico in 1986, was nowhere near up to his level. Losing 3 0 at home to Sweden put things into perspective for the Azzurri.

Here logic has nothing to do with it! Let's say it's the usual Italic spirit of those times, absolutely inadequate for a football that was rapidly changing. After the disastrous world championship in Germany in 1974, the Italian national football team was changed for 90%! After the 1982 World Cup victory in Spain, NO player was changed! The result was that, in the first case, the Italian national team had to wait 4 years to get started, given the inexperience of so many changed players. In the second case, on the other hand, at the 1984 European qualifiers, there were many players who were by now very advanced in age, and perhaps even already satisfied by the recent World Cup victory. What happened, this video has illustrated very well!

This Italian team should never have won the World Cup of 1982. The final should've been between Brazil and France. This Euro 84 showed their real worth: They won only one match against Cyprus, drew in three, and lost in four to mediocre teams. Yes, in 82, they beat Poland, W Germany, Argentina, and Brazil. However, Poland was not a great team. It was not the Poland of 1974. Germany, too, was crap: The Germans were defeated by Algeria, then cheated with Austria to get through to the second stage. Argentina had a great team, but the Argentinians underperformed throughout the World Cup, probably because they were distracted by the Falklands War. The Italians were simply lucky against Brazil. Thank you, Euro 84. You truly showed the real quality of that lucky Italian team of 82.

You are right on many points, but Argentina lost to Belgium, Italy and Brazil; that is not a sign of a great team. Kempes performance had declined since his top form in 1978 W. Cup, and Maradona had not yet peaked and was not mature enough to control his temper: in 1986 W.Cup, despite many harsh fouls on Maradona, he never lost his temper and focused on his game, and the team was beneficiary of his maturity.

Brazil suffered the most humiliating defeat against West germany 7-1. So dont belittle italian performance in 1982. Brazil and Italy match was a hardly fought match and it was any bodys match. Yo ví ese mundial e ltalia lo ganó en forma espectacular. Batiendo al mas talentoso pero no mejor equipo del torneo Brasil. Ya se veia en las eliminatorias a esa copa del mundo el poderio dei azurri y a ellos se sumó un Paolo Rossi inspirado. En estas eliminatorias a la Eurocopa ya el equipo se encontraba en resaca luego del tremendo logro de la Copa del Mundo 1982 en donde brillaron aparte de Rossi un formidable Bruno Conti y una defensa de hierro. Un equipo muy compacto, muy equilibrado y sin ningún complejo se llevo por delante a sus mas grandes rivales.

This is the typical nature of Italians who manage to give their best in the most difficult moments and have always saved their physical and mental strength in less important matches but at the same time it is the team that in direct clashes with the big nations is the team with the best balance sheet and that makes it the most difficult to beat (Germany knows something about it).

Zoff era presente fino alla partita di andata con la Svezia, quindi con la qualificazione ampiamente compromessa.. non avrebbe cambiato di una virgola l'esito delle qualificazioni. Detto questo in porta c'era Bordon non Galli (che giocò solo contro Cipro)

He said: "We were that strog at the time, if we played against them 10 times, we would have won min. seven times"! What a moron this man is! This Brasil team hyad the very best midfield ever and their performance was close to perfect to this point. theitalien side, they didn`t win a single game in the group phase, surpisly they had a moment "everything works" and a kidy drem comes true with Paolo Rossi in Person!
