This is by far the most impressive palace in Europe: a true inheritor of the ancient Roman style of architecture--grand staircases, huge domes, frescoe, marble columns and pillesters, statuary, etc. etc. Domus Tiberiana in the city of Rome is an example model for this continuity. Things like Versailles or Hofburg (or Windsor) cannot hold a candle to it in style, solid form and elegance. And yet, it is almost totally unknown to the public!! Only the impartial architects and art historians (unmarred by blind nationalism) know of the magnificience of this structure and speak of it in their classes

As Italian, with a degree in history of art, I can say that your are wrong. Versailles was the model who inspired all other european courthouses. It was the apex of baroque style in Europe. The Reggia di Caserta was build basically almost 2 century later, in neoclassical style, when industrial revolution was already happening. It has a completely different story and has to be put in the right perspective. Versailles was the center of the power of the continent, while Caserta always remains a regional centre of power. The scale of Caserta's palace is truly commendable, the decoration are insane, the artworks incredible. But you have to put everything in perspective: the Kingdom of Two Sicilys wasn't comparable to the other European power. Speaking of France, for example, don't compare to Versailles: the palace of the french kings was the Louvre. It's almost 230.000 square meters in surface, so it's even bigger than Caserta's palace (at that time, it was the largest complex in the world, comprehensive of the Tuileries palace). The Reggia stands out for the grand vision of the Bourbon (the same royal family who built Versailles) but we have to be careful when comparing building with the same representative function (Caserta/Louvre) or building with similar symbolism of wealth for their time (Caserta/Versailles).

@@Squagliafrittata Amazing how you repeat the touristic superficialities for this masterpiece. The French were simply trying to copy what they understood of the Roman architectural heritage, earlier in Tuileries and then at Versailles, all the way down to the Roman triumphal arches in the courtyard of their palaces, in the middle of the city--everywhere. Napolean (himself born Roman/Italian) carried all the Roman goodies he could get his hands on, to Paris. From columns holding ceilings while leaning against the side walls to pilasters, to grand staircase, to giant yards, lakes, domes, roofings, high corridors, barrel arches, and high windows... all copied from the Romans (except indoor plumbing that French never figured how to make). All of this are found at Casreta, and they are Roman, whether directly or circuitously.

Caserta Royal Palace is absolutely mindblowing and still an underrated treasure off the beaten path. The dimensions of the palace are impressive, the gardens and fountains create a magnificent backdrop and the complex is truly breathtaking. It is a tourist destination that I recommend to every visitor, together with the islands of Ischia and Ponza. Campania is not only Naples, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and Capri, there are many other places that are worth visiting! The Royal Palace of Caserta is the largest former royal residence in the world, over 2 million m3 in volume and covering an area of 47,000 m2 and a floorspace of 138,000 square meters is distributed in the five stories of the building (Source Wikipedia)

An Impressive glimpse into an undoubtedly vast palace Marred only by the contributor's penchant for making sweeping but Totally Unfounded statements, for example Italy's " Royal Palace of Caserta" is actually only the SIXTH Largest once "Royal" or official residence, in continental Europe. Those ahead of " Palacio Caserta " are the "Louvre Palace" compound in Paris, the "Hofburg Palace" in Vienna, "The Winter Palace" in St. Petersburg, The "Apostolic Palace" Vatican City and the "Malbork Castle" complex in Poland. Need to fact check your submissions next time perhaps...!
