In one Sicilian town, littered with abandoned homes, houses are for sale for just one Euro, as part of the 'Case 1 Euro scheme'. The catch? Buyers are required to renovate their newly acquired homes.

In the Sicilian town of Mussomeli, a unique solution to the problem of abandoned homes has been developed: the 'Case 1 Euro' scheme. Houses are sold for 1 Euro, on the condition they'll be renovated. '[Renovation requires] a minimum of €20,000', explains one estate agent. Local Salvatore fears that the town may yet become a ghost town: 'On this street, you'd be amazed how many abandoned houses there are'. Though the scheme has proved popular, a concern is that many buyers will not reside permanently in the town. 'If you work remotely it's a great opportunity. But also, I say, think of something that's going to give jobs to the people of a town', says new resident Danny. Other towns are tackling the problem in different ways. In Camini, Rosario and Guisy set up a program to integrate refugees: ‘We gave help to[refugees], but in the same way these people were helping the village to have another chance.’

@Wisdom Dominic You have to fix it up within a year of purchase. We checked a year ago and all the good homes have been sold. The homes that are left are beyond repair.

only 1 dollar ones, the 5,000 and 10,000 plus homes don't have to pay the extra taxes, but taxes and paperwork, notary, registry are estimated to be 12,000 at closing. So it's best to buy one that is 5,000 or more depending on the renovation to reduce the closing expenses.

Keep saving up, then. The houses come with an obligation to renovate them to government-mandated standards within a set time period (often one year). That means fixing structural problems (strengthening the foundation, filling up cracks in the walls, replacing the roof, installing double glazed windows, installing heating, et cetera), which will quickly run into the tens of thousands. You're not getting a house for a few thousand euros, you're getting a husk, a ruin, and you have to pay basically what you'd pay for a new build to fix it up.

The catch is job. If you can sustain yourself by yourself without job and you have about $35k then you can buy one. People move and abandon their home because there is no jobs.You buy it by $1 and then pay $5,000 as registration fee , tax and then the rest $30,000 as renovation, they are unlivable homes, and you have to renovate it within certain time otherwise it will be taken from you and put back in the market. There is nothing free in the world if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't.

Can anyone comment on the Italian government high taxes and Europe's inability to compete on the global market? Sure Germany is successful ... but the majority of Europe is stagnant and the governments have borrowed too much. Is Italy working on lowering taxes and deregulation? Would any of that even help?

Psst, Germany is NOT successful 🤫 We're getting serious problems over here... Just two days ago, I got a letter from my electricity provider. From August on, I will have to pay double. That makes fuckin 90 bucks, instead of 45... That is really much for me... Germany is failing and its the politicians, that turned off all our power facilities for the green new deal or whatever its called...
