What's slightly counter-intuitive is following Kelly Handerhan advice which is “Do NOT fix problems” and “think as a manager”. In this case we are fixing the problem but the best answer is indeed option C.

Hi Colin, are we confident enough that the Kernel level rootkit issue will be addressed/removed after formatting with a verified os image? for question 2 I am a bit leaned towards the option here as we are looking for something in BIOS/firmware level. If possible request you to shed some light on this. thanks for your videos and they are definitely a great source of learning for CISSP. cheers

The second question is about public server.. and restoring data from backup doesn't seem to be the best option to me. Since there will definitely be a downtime while fixing it using a backup. That's why I felt, rootkit removal could be the best possible answer here in this context. If it were some other server, which is accessed by let it be my company employees.., I could do remediation during off hours using the backup..restore.

I mulled over that answer as well but this is a public facing webserver...you could remove the rootkit but there still is a chance that it's still there as opposed to restoring from a known good back to get the server back online. Also, it depends on the company type but I like to think of all companies are in the business to make money.

Christopher Edwards I am wondering.. CISSP exam answers are mostly related to CIA triad. And here, while trying to resume operations restoring backup.. is a challenge to system availability. So that’s where the confusion lies.

I believe optiin 2 were correct till it does not say manually remove the rootkit..which means it does not ensure 100% from virus free..so the second best amswer is uninstall and then restore..

For question 2, I’ll go with choice no. 2
