Item Abuse TAS

11/25/10 edit - Happy Thanksgiving (to those that celebrate it)! As a little treat, I spent some time re-timing the annotations and implementing pause annotations again! Nearly anytime an annotation shows up, the video will pause for a full minute, so most people should be able to read all the annotations now.

Oh, and before people start asking, the audioswapped song is "Speak to Angels" by 009 Sound System. It was changed because somebody thought it was funny to flag this video for copyright infringement, and it muted the audio. Eh.
TASes are recordings of games "formed by constructing an input file slowly over time using an emulator as a tool to overcome human limitations such as skill and reflex, then playing the file back to give the impression that the game is played extraordinarily" (from TASVideos.org). Tools such as savestates, frame-advance (not used in this TAS), and slowdown are used extensively to produce superhuman play. Not the most fun thing to make, let me tell you (especially with ZSNES.)

Don't mind the HUD difference after the non-scrolling castle and after the yellow switch-palace type area; penangbenny forgot to add those rooms in until after I was done with what he had already given me, and I was not about to re-do everything. Also, even though it says it's version 1.3, there is no big difference in the actual level (really, the main difference is that 1.7 has one or two different backgrounds, and a few more spike-walls to not allow some walljumps I made in the TAS.)
By the way, the TAS was made using ZSNES since it was back when snes9x didn't agree with my computer for some reason (it took until April 2010 to get the thing to agree with me.)

I think most people here would benefit from reading the damn description and learning what a TAS run is. Anyway, the guy (or guys) who designed this level is a genius. To know the Super Mario World engine so well and to have everything placed pixel-perfectly... And then you learning how to do every single little trick like that; even if it's TAS and not real-time, the level of skill and knowledge needed to create this is no less impressive. It had me in awe pretty much the entire time. Kudos.

To the people who disliked this because of the music, here's a little tutorial. How to mute the audio. On your speaker, find the little volume control knob. Turn it all the way down until you don't hear the audio anymore. Another way: on the video player, next to the button with the triangle is a button that looks like a megaphone with sound coming out. Slide the bar all the way to the left until there is an x next to the icon, and Bob's your uncle.

The most basic thing you do in TASing a game or hack is that you actually play it with the emulators frame-by-frame-advance feature on. which means: you have unlimited time in between each and every frame of the game to decide what to do and which buttons to press. To enhance the power of this feature, they usually use scripts which press the buttons for them. They usually use savestates too, since you can still screw up even with frame-by-frame advancement.

I imagine the reason you shoot through the concrete floor is somehow similar to the "Big Mario crouches into a Small Mario-sized corridor and spin-jumps to go through the ground". You get forced to the right, so you have to be far enough away that you'll go through the block before getting crushed into the wall. Maybe there's a certain frame where the two items form a ceiling for some reason.
