In Jan '91, we moved from West TX to coastal VA...a whole nuther world for us. Been there two weeks and a threat of snow came along. Our phone rang off the wall with folks telling us to get to the grocery store and get what we needed. Jeepers! Thought I better go, even though we'd brought all our preps with us. The scene was ridiculous: cars parked everywhere, even on the grass; mayhem of folks running I/O of the store with carts at breakneck pace; folks fighting over this and that. I just pulled away and went home. Turns out, it was a dusting of snow which didn't even stick to the sidewalk, just the grass. I'll never approach any retailer again under any kind of threat. Early in my home ownership journey, I got stuck waiting in long lines at the grocery store due to an impending snow storm. I vowed never to let that happen again. Keeping that promise means that I have to constantly keep my preps up to date. I have found that as long as I keep up on the food and household supplies, the only thing I might have to run out for is fuel and as long as I go out for them immediately I can avoid the lines. There is nothing as satisfying as snuggling up at home while everyone else is fighting traffic and long lines trying to get the supplies that you picked up before the crisis hit. Live in Jersey. During Sandy, the neighboring Township was aglow with transformers exploding. They all lost power. After Sandy passed, everyone in that area were going nuts to try and find anything in other townships. A year ago when there was a boil water advisory, I'd never seen water fly off the shelves so fast. And we weren't even in the area under advisory. So we had the ppl being affected coming over then we had the locals freaking out and buying it. Let me tell u fights broke out. Either with another customer or with a worker for telling them there was a limit.

I went on Friday before hurricane beryl came in Sunday night to get plywood. They had already sold out of 1/2 in plywood. I wanted 5/8 anyway. Funny thing is I didn’t see many houses boarded up. We were on the west side so it wasn’t too bad. I had plenty of stuff to use I just didn’t feel like scraping stuff together.

You can easily put together a large DIY lithium battery pack, that can run electronics and a 12v fridge easily. A portable 250w solar panel should keep it charged. Similar to a off-road camper unit. Also helps save on fuel/gas usage.

I took one inch oil lamp wicks and put a length needed through stainless steel scrubbers. Put the scrubber in a bowl or jar and use oil. If it gets knocked over it goes out. With cats we have to be careful. Good if small kids are around too. Oil was used for thousands of years to light the homes.

You can eliminate using fire by bringing in outdoor yard lights that are solar powered. I have bought them for a dollar apiece at the dollar store, but I also recommend the $15-$20 better ones from Home Depot.

I’m glad my girls no longer need formula. It was a pain to get it when there was a shortage for awhile. With 2 babies we would go through so much and most places limited it to one container so I had to drive for hours getting one here and there. Plus we had to use a special kind that made it even harder to find. I feel for anyone with babies when formula is hard to get.

Great video! I just saw an article on MSM homepage about uses for hydrogen peroxide. They said it is a good disinfectant. Also, I wouldn’t count on ATM’s. They have to be stocked and if no one is there to refill it you are out of luck. Stashing a few small bills at a time or more if you can would be a safer option. And it won’t take up as much space as any of your other preps! 😊

How long can you store gas in gas cans and where can you keep them? I live in AZ and the temps are in the triple digits so I don't know if that would be safe.

Not in or near your house. We have a storage shed for that, but it can be stolen. We rotate the gas twice a year, as it loses octane.
