@Graham Cook This is taking short-sightedness and turning it up to eleven. The highest estimate for the total cost of ITER that I can find, running from 2007 till 2025, is $65B. That figure is heavily disputed with a more likely cost being around half that. The US spent $715B on the military in 2021 alone. Just stop and think about that for a moment. One country, on it's own, could build ten ITER's a year with it's military spend and you're complaining about the whole world getting together to build one experiment over 20 years! You've fallen into the common trap of robbing Peter to pay Paul when it comes to research. If we just stopped being so obsessed with blowing each other up we'd have more than enough money to do all the research we wanted. As for energy storage research, there's no particular shortage of funding right now. Whoever cracks that problem is going to be very very rich. The problem is the field lacks that one killer idea that will actually solve the problem in an acceptable way. I'm sure you have your favourite storage technology that you want to see funded but unfortunately they all have critical issues.

@Graham Cook We at least agree that fusion won't save us from climate change. My point was to illustrate that we don't have to cut funding for one science project to fund another as they are a drop in the ocean compared to other spending. Even if we do have to cut funding why pick on fusion power research, why not cancel Cern or the space programs or Ligo or...? They cost an absolute fortune and and almost entirely blue sky. At least ITER stands a reasonable chance of fixing a problem a generation from now. Your enthusiasm for energy storage is commendable but it just doesn't work at scale yet and there are some massive open questions. Personally, I think we should be going flat out for a combination of renewable and nuclear as a stop gap solution. People complain that nuclear takes too long to build but most of that is politics, if there's a will to get it done a reactor can be built and running in under 5 years. Even if you're amongst the irrational crowd when it comes to nuclear waste it's got to be a better option than climate change. Renewable plus nuclear is the real, ready right now, solution.

Why these platitudes? None of the great minds in science know or understand how to make a commercial fusion reactor. That's why they say that a commercial fusion reactor will appear around 2050. And a commercial fusion reactor can be made in 2-3 years!!! But these scientists are plasma confinement specialists only, and they don't want a commercial fusion reactor to show up that fast. Their failed project has been funded for 70 years and no one demands a commercial fusion reactor in return. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWW3nH97h6xooJI

@@bernhardschmalhofer855 You have a strange idea of the size of objects. The Sun is 1,392,020 kilometers in diameter. Light from the Sun to Earth, 150 million kilometers away, takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds. The solar corona is about 300-400 km thick. This is the size obtained by nuclear fusion on the surface of the Sun. If the radiation power is twice as large, the diameter of the solar corona will increase in proportion to the laws of thermodynamics.

Fusion is the attempt to design Maxwell's Daemon for a fractal gearbox of relative-timing ratio-rates vortices manifestation, a conic-cyclonic modulo-geometrical interference positioning, resonance wave-packaging machine. All opinions come down to.., "I wish you luck"! (In MY worthless opinion) Condensates are only as stable as the Holographic crystallisation matrix of vertices in vortices, nodal-vibrational Supersymmetry all-ways all-at-once sync-duration holography here-now-forever. If ITER knows how to keep the impacted vortex matrix holding still, (temporarily made of relative-timing making rates of "stillness"), then "problem solved". Eg the "Drive" postulated for an "Alien UFO" involves an Accelerator and Fusion-Fission Target that affects the supposed matrix/fabric of Spacetime in a way that allows a controlled degree of movement by relative-timing phase-shifting coordination of the Vehicle without disrupting the whole resonant integrity of it. (An inside-outside Perspective on perceived experiences of existence, by assembled Theoretical abstractions)

Sorry but fusion based on the idea that "energy" is within matter is completely wrong. Your physics is incorrect and I can prove it. As a challenge answer this: How does a non-contact force work? When you realize that pulls (non-contact) forces can not exist then you can adjust your physics after talking to me. BTW: There are no neutrons or protons, they are the same particle in different orientations. If you disagree then how does a neutron held within an atom? Keep banging your head!
