NTFS allows permissions to be either configured on each file or folder or inherited from a parent folder. This video will look at both ways of configuring permissions and how the administrator can use them effectively to achieve the result that they require.

Explicit and inherited
Explicit permissions are created when the object is first created. For example, if a hard disk is first formatted, permissions must be assigned to the root folder in order for the user to access data on the drive. Otherwise, explicit permissions can be created on an object manually at any time.
Inherited permissions are permissions that are inherited from the parent. The advantage of this is that if the permissions assigned to the parent change, the object or objects inheriting the permissions will also change.
Explicit and inherited Example
When a hard disk is first formatted, explicit permissions will be assigned to the root folder. It is not possible to use inherited permissions because there is no folder above the root folder in which permissions can be inherited from. In this example, everyone has been given read & execute permission to the root folder. Also the administrators have been given full control. When the folder c:\Users is created, it will inherit the permissions from the folder above it which is c:\. So essentially the folder c:\users has the same permissions as the root folder. When the sub folder Joe is created, the explicit permission modify for the user Joe is added. This gives the user Joe the ability to read, write and delete files and folders in the folder c:\Users\Joe. If Joe were to create a sub folder called c:\Users\Joe\Docs this folder would inherit the permissions from the folder above and thus Joe would have the ability to read, write and delete files and folders in that sub folder.
1) To create a folder structure like the one in the example, open Windows Explorer, open a drive, in this case D, right click on the white space and select folder under the new menu.
2) When the folder is created it should be selected allowing the name of the folder to be changed to Users.
3) Open the folder and right click on the white space. Select the option Folder under new and rename the folder to Joe.
4) In order for Joe to read, write and delete to files and folders in this folder, he needs to be given additional access. To change the security of the folder, right click the folder and select the option properties.
5) From properties select the tab security and then press the edit button.
6) Press the add button and then enter in the username of Joe. Once Joe has been added, tick the option for modify.
7) Open the folder Joe and then create a folder called Docs.
8) Right click on the Docs folder, select properties and then select the security tab. This should show that the permissions have been inherited from the parent folder. Inherited permissions appear as gray ticks and explicit permissions have black ticks.
9) There are some cases you may need inherited permissions that need to be changed. To do this, open the properties of the file or folder, select the security tab and press the advanced button. On the advanced settings screen press the button at the bottom of the screen “Disable inheritance”. A dialog will be presented asking if you want to convert the existing permissions or remove all permission from the object. If you convert the permissions, this essentially copies the permissions being applied. If you remove the permission, all permissions will be removed and you will need to configure them from scratch.
10) To remove a permissions, press the edit button. Select the permission that you want to remove and then press the remove button.

I've been working for quite a while with NTFS permissions (since Windows 2000), and I can say that the way this tutorial has been done, it's a pleasure to view. In less than 7 minutes you receive a good solid overview of NTFS explicit and Inherited Permissions. Usually, Inheritance and disabling inheritance may pose some questions to students on some scenarios. No if you check this video, everything is explained cristal clear. Thanks for sharing

I always need a refresher on permissions as I don't do them enough. What is annoying is when you take inheritance away, that folder can now, no longer easily set the permissions lower down for that folder, you always have to remember there is a folder deeper in, with only explicit permissions set, so you have remember to go in and amend that folder manually.

Is there a way to modify individual permissions in a group? For example, if you have a group of 5 people under one group (John, Mary, George, Alex, Sam) there doesn't seem to be a way to edit just Alex but rather whatever changes you make applies to all 5 people. Thanks.

super helpfull... but I have a question please... If I create many users in a Group and give this group "READ" NTFS permission and ( Joe is a member in that Group) and I want to give him a "MODIFY" permission... what I have to do????
@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining 2 жыл бұрын
Essentially NTFS will just go through the permission list until it finds an allow permission. Thus, if you give Joe Modify permission he will get that permission. To consider it differently. If Joe had read access from a group and it was applied to a folder. Joe would have read access. If you then gave Joe direct write access to the folder. Joe would now have read and write permission. Read permission for the group permission and write permission for his user being given direct permission.

What if you have a lot of users? Then you cant click into every single folder to change the permissions? Is there any faster way to do it?
@bspadotto
@bspadotto 9 жыл бұрын
Charizes if you have AD DS in your enviroment you manage this using security groups.. i.e: there a folder "Acc Docs" on a file server and only employees from Accounting dept will have access to it, you create a security group called "Accounting" and put everyone who belong to Accounting dept , then you just need to add and configure permissions for the group instead add/config for each user Now if it on a Workgroup enviroment (no AD DS) you will need to add/config permission for each user

How can I protect the folder where user can access all the file in the folder, but they can't open & copy the folder.
@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining 7 жыл бұрын
NTFS permissions simply are not robust to handle that granularity. You can only use folders for network shares so ultimately the users will have to open the folder to access the file. However, if you are using Windows Server 2012 R2 or newer, you can implement Dynamic Access Control (DAC) which will provide you with robust auditing and data classification management. With DAC, you can prevent file copying and audit file access as well as controlling the overall effective access of a user. Here's some scenario explanations for DAC: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/solution-guides/dynamic-access-control--scenario-overview

I have slim ware on 8.1. I want to remove it. I didn't inherit that permission. All I wanna do is remove all access to all their folders files and fingers! Can it be done? I need to go to the root sys. Don't i.
@itfreetraining
@itfreetraining 9 жыл бұрын
+Vic Smith Hmmm, not familiar with the software. If it runs as a service you can configured the service to run under a particular user. It is just a matter of giving that user access to the files that you want Slimware to access. Otherwise if you can't configure the service run the software as that user.
