In 1981 year Greece joined the EU. As far as I understand Greeks didn't know English language before 1981 year, wasn't it?

Depends what part of Greece. Most urban Greeks knew English to some degree. Those who had connections with other countries, had been and returned from USA , Australia, South Africa, England, of course spoke English (and/or other languages) very well.
