Hi Alan and Leslie, At the risk of sounding insincere, we ALWAYS enjoy your videos! This is no exception. I must say I'm sorry to hear of your hearing issues. And I'm not the only one to mention that you have a superb speaking voice and have suggested a number of times you should host a show on PBS or something similar. You enunciate so clearly, your audio performance is a real pleasure. I can think of a number of channels I enjoy but they constantly have audio/volume issues and that gets annoying. And so in the recent past, we play along with you and have enjoyed the drinking game, though sadly, we don't see the waves so much these days but fondly recall how your channel has grown and progressed. RE: the topic of this video, it's amazing how the little expenses add up. And you chose the responsible path by being realistic and not promoting the island as a destination that one can scrape by on $1,000 or $1,500 a month, just to snare a few more views as some others might do. I'm also very happy that the bloom is not off the rose, that you all are still enjoying life on Madeira. On that topic, I wonder if.... just IF... the two of you have ever considered what your PLAN B would be -- in the event that things changed. Admittedly, I've veered off into another topic. We always enter these things wanting an escape hatch of sorts. Anyway, thinking fondly of you all from across the pond. Ciao.

Yes, I totally agree with his speaking voice.I easily can see you lending your voice to a nature documentary. I watch your videos mainly in the evening and your clear, subdued speaking voice is a delight. Maybe you should try to be the "voice" of Madeira Island for commercial goals. I truly wouldn't be surprised if they take you in. I think you would be absolutely great for the job. About your hearing loss, yes it sucks, but you know what? they have the best hearing aids available and affordable nowadays, so that problem is more or less solved too. Up to the next challenge; "The voice of Madeira" That's you (or something like that)

Ola Maisie, Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. We use Google FI however it is a basic plan that we can only use on WIFI. We never use data or make actual phone calls. It is only for confirming a text identification when when needed. Think US banking. It is very expensive since it is basically useless. Hope this helps Leslie and Alan

It would be interesting to hear more of your views on the Portuguese banking system. Here in Norway, we wrote our last check/ cheque in 1992, thirty years ago. We have apps on our phones to make small payments, we use bank cards when shopping, most of the bills for regular expenses are paid using an online banking service. It can go years between being in a bank, and we never carry cash on us.

Here in Portugal is just the same, cards and online banking service.You can pay all bills through ATM. PORTUGAL was the first country in the world to pay for the motorway via the Greenway, even first than Norway. Portugal is a poor European country, but not an african.

Very cool story and great video. Couple questions for you if you don’t mind. Ironically my parents families are from Madeira, they moved to New York as teenagers in the 70s. My parents are both retired and still live in the USA and they’ve always wanted to move back to retire. My question is in regards to Medicaid and health insurance for people with mental disabilities. My older brother(45 years old) lives with my parents and he has schizophrenia and takes a lot of different medication. Are you aware of anyone with conditions like my brother and how they navigate getting good quality medicine for schizophrenia and lastly…any idea of the cost for something like that? Thanks!

A few bits of feedback. I really enjoy your channel, and have learned a lot from your videos. I'm going to offer some fairly-direct feedback, purely from a place of wanting best success for your channel. The pace is a bit slow - I get that you're offering a chance for the videos, but for me it drags a bit sometimes. It might help if there was a bit of commentary of the underlying video. Your voice is also very soothing - to the point I can't watch these later in the evenings :) I guess my recommendation here is to have a bit more pace and be slightly more conversational. I'd also say that it is over six minutes into the video before you get to specific cost-of-living items in this video. You could probably shorten the preamble a fair bit. You mention that banks offer many more services than in the US - examples would be very useful. Similar point on your comment that you there were expense items that most people don't talk about - you should probably mention them specifically. I'm guessing some of them were things like the mail service and bank fees, but I was left wondering. Thanks so much for what you're offering - I know it's time-consuming. A couple co-workers just got back from a work-trip to Madeira, and one said it was like Hawaii and San Francisco had a baby (high praise indeed). We're several years before retirement, and we're kicking around the idea of Portugal, Spain or Italy. (Portugal is the leader in the clubhouse for me 🙂)

Ola MS Nice to hear from you again. It is interesting you can pay all your Bill's like electricity. They provide a code that you type in and pay the bill with. You can pay for you online purchases with a code that you type in at the bank. So you are not providing your debt card information to every retailer. Top up your phone. You mentioned Medicare! Are you still paying for Medicare in the US due to you being 66? Or is it Portugese Medicare if that exists? I didn’t think it did.

Olá JP, Great to hear from you again. It is interesting. If you cancel your part B Medicare which is what you pay the $170 base fee for. Then if you ever go back you will be charged a penalty until death. So it is not an easy decision to cancel. But we did finally cancel the part B but the part A remains in effect. Hope this helps. @@ItllBeFun I don't have a strict budget for control instead I Make what I can I Do things myself, and I Grow food it is different than buying what you need and trying to balance the inflation except in the end one still has to budget for what falls outside what we can do like coffee lol. I suppose I could still have this lifestyle and live in another country but medical cost is an issue with Canadians as we have never directly paid for care.
