While the people are nice and everything is very cheap, be prepared for a lot of garbage and it's also a heavy smoking culture....even in restaurants. We were disappointed as we thought that Albania woukd be perfect. We're still looking....😏

@@ItllBeFun I came here just to mention Albania. The cost of living is much less than all of the countries listed here. US citizens can stay 1 year visa free and residency is much less expensive ($60k property) than say Portugal Golden Visa and the process is easier and quicker from what I've researched Albania has varied landscapes and decent beaches in the south. You should visit and report back here. 😁

Bienvenue or Welcome in French is pronouced Be ah venew. Easier than it looks. Moving to France next year and as a US citizen retiree it is a very good country to move to. All our 401k/403b, Roth, pension social security and investment accounts are taxed in the US only so our total tax load is the same as currently living in the US. With no or much less property and state tax we will pay the same or less in overall taxes while getting healthcare from France in 90 days. It has a lot to offer. Thanks for covering options and helping people find their dream location.

Thanks for your help. We agree France really is a fantastic option for retirement. The only issue we found is the inheritance taxes can be hefty. If that is a potential issue it's worth taking a look at.

Same here. My Texodus/emigration date is May 2025. French healthcare, while we'll be able to apply for it on Day 91 of living in the country, does not go into effect at that time. It can take months.

@@zeitgeist888 Les Franchies YT channel interviewed a lawyer who explained how to avoid inheritance taxes. U will need to create a French LLC before buying property. Then u will purchase ur property thru the French LLC and name urself and heirs as shareholders. When u pass, the heirs have the lawyer remove ur names. Also, pls note the annual French tax on worldwide real estate holdings. Also, u will prob pay a modest annual amt for healthcare plus abt $100/mo for top up insurance to cover anything not paid for by the health ins. I think the amt u will need to pay is based on ur gross annual earnings

But for many people, things while they are alive are more important that factors after they are dead. I was excited for Portugal a couple of years ago. I make more than enough with my monthly SS but as a single person the amount of savings they required you to have in the bank was not doable. Many people want to leave the US so they can start having such things as extra money and accumulating a savings. For single women France offered quite a bit and the healthcare is top notch. I also lived in Mexico and for under 1,000 in Mexico City. I've been up in Scotland a few years but definetly need a sunnier locale. Not to mention the hit the US dollar takes when converting into British Pounds. I also considered Panama as that US dollar matches the Panamanian. However, humid, tropical rainy weather is not for me. I prefer the Mediterranean climate. I love watching your videos. 👏🏼

Just to clarify: Tax Residents (those who spend 183 days per year in the country) of Spain are taxed on their worldwide income. Spain has a progressive tax rate, income greater than 60K euros is taxed at 45%. Many parts of Spain also have a "wealth tax." Bureaucracy there is rampant, to get a drivers license there as an American takes an average of 4 months and costs over 1000 euros even if you have 50 years of driving experience! Since January 1, 2024, foreign-sourced income repatriated in Thailand was subject to Thai Personal Income Tax regardless of which year it was brought in. However with tax rates lower than the US and with the Tax treaty, the vast majority of American retirees in Thailand have no Thai tax liability. In general the high taxes in European countries and the high crime rates in Latin American countries are disqualifiers for me. Thailand is referred to as the Land of Smiles where the food is incredible, the beaches are the most beautiful on earth and you can get a one hour Thai massage for about 3 US dollars.

Olá Valerie I created a spreadsheet that compares US taxes it Portuguese over the years. It is interesting. However it is worth speaking with an expat tax attorney and a Portuguese tax attorney. Both of our are listed in the description. Because in Portugal some pensions are tax a lot less. If you are lucky yours may fall in the right category. Which could mean you only pay 10% on that portion. Here is some information. Take it with a grain of salt .In Portugal, government pensions (including U.S. federal, state, and local government pensions, such as teacher pensions) are taxed exclusively by the United States, based on the U.S.-Portugal tax treaty. Key Points: 1. Taxation in the U.S. Only Government and teacher pensions are not taxed in Portugal but remain taxable in the U.S. These pensions include payments from federal or state employment (e.g., teachers, military, civil servants). 2. Private Pensions Are Different If the pension comes from private employment or Social Security, it is taxable in Portugal if you are a tax resident there. 3. Residency in Portugal If you are a Portuguese tax resident, you must declare the pension on your Portuguese tax return for informational purposes. However, a foreign tax credit applies to avoid double taxation. 4. Portugal Tax Rate Portugal has progressive income tax rates ranging from 14.5% to 48%, but these rates do not apply to U.S. government pensions due to the treaty.
