I fondly remember these early shows. Till was freaking terrified with stage fright, but always delivers a great vocal. While he thought this song was the only.one from the first album worth anything, he hated singing it live bc everyone was focused on him. Then they started sending Flake out into the crowd in a rubber dinghy to lighten things up. Also, the sea, boats, etc are a recurring theme for Till's writing. The sea offered freedoms he only dreamed of as a child growing up in East Germany... Have you read Till's books of poetry? They might give you an insight into the lyrics bc you really GET what he's saying in prose. I enjoyed them!

are Till's books, his poetry available in English translation? I know it isn't quite the same although a good translation should be close.

"You take the fire from the candle" - a bad omen for sailors. Smoking from a candle in a lighthouse, a person closed the light in the window and the ships went astray Generally, I think that this song about man who loves the girl whose mother died. And he wants to help her not feel sad, but she doesn't loves him and in the end he is "left alone"
@bernardoesperanto31949 ай бұрын
Andrey... -- Why do you think her mother died? My understanding is the following: The girl always had problems with her mother, so she left her home and ended as a prostitute on the street. He wants to save her, but she refuses and at the end both are lonely.

I think the song is about his partner who is sick with cancer (or some other serious disease) and dies from it. The line "They only spoke of your mother" implies that the mother shared the same fate. The line "The fire you take from the candle" could mean that she is a smoker. This line is also part of a German proverb. If someone lights his cigarette on a candle and does not take a match, it is said that then a sailor dies. Sailors in the past made matches when they were ashore to earn extra money. If you don't use a match, you deprive the sailor of his income (and he must die).

I tell you what I think this song means: It is a love story with a twist/tragical ending, you were right here. The sea is a reappearing theme in Till's songs. It means sex or physical closeness for him. For example, in another song he describes a man speaking to a young girl and wanting her to step into his car. He says "You are so young, you have never seen seen the sea.", which means, she never had sex. And the sea is never again mentioned in the song. In "Seemann" it is the story of a man who fell in love with a whore. "She is standing at the lantern" always means a whore ist standing there to get customers. She is crying. She is not happy with her job. The sea stands for sex. He is in love with her and wants to rescue her and get her away from all that. But when he does, he is just like all the others. He says " Am I not the best seaman?". He is defining him thru sex, like all the others before him. She lights a cigarette with a candle, that means in German legends, a sailor dies when you do that. She realizes, he is just like all the others and gets rid of him, either leaves him or kills him. The mother. For me it is very very obvious that her mother was a whore as well and probably the best one of them all ("They only talk of your mother") and she was a product of her mother's business and just went along with it too.

Wonderful reaction, respectful to this song. Here's a little detail most people miss: in the refrain the Laterne ("street light"?) refers to the song "Lili Marleen" by Lale Andersen. Wikipedia has a good article about the song and it's quite intersting history, and KZbin videos with that song have comment sections rich with further details and stories. Lili Marleen adds a new dimension to Seemann, and that sea is much wilder and deeper than expected.

I think this song is about a person (x) and another person (y). x believes that y is travelling through life alone and that y should come with x. That is the whole "Come into my boat", come with me. And I also think the line "The winds blow the sails straight" is that being on a boat (the metaphor) brings wind with it which will cause trouble and turbulence. I'm assuming this is to mean that life gets really depressing sometimes, implying that those times should not be spent alone. And then during the refrain, x says, "Now you stand there at the lantern. With tears in your face.". I'm assuming this to mean that y is standing there with the ferryman of death, regretful of his life. So idk if this is actually what it means, but that's the most likely as of right now.

I think we're talking about two intertweined pictures here: The guy rowing alone in his boat and the guy on the street seeing the love of his life. If she comes into his boat means they're doing their journey together now.

Maybe it's about a father missing when he was younger... Went out never returned. No one spoke about the father only his mother because it was a painful subject. Now he is a little older and mom has passed.

A helmsman is someone who is steering a boat / vehicle.... maybe he was referring to his car as a boat while he was on the street, drifting along and who stands alone at a lantern in the night....
@plumpdy58102 жыл бұрын
Maybe the song is about how the sailor went alone after asking the person to come and they denied and he felt alone in the night and so being cold and alone he commited suicide and then the other person stood waiting at the lantern for him but time stood still as he never returned and seasons passed and he still wasn’t back and no one noticed so they only talked about the mother not him even though he had been gone for a while. Still kind of confusing but this is my take.

I agree it is about a lost relastionship. Like the person becomes lost in the vast ocean, meaning the world. Come in my boat, would mean come back into my world. But maybe it is actual loss. But somone standing there at the latern, seems more like somone has not past away but is still around visible. It could also mean somone got lost, standing at lanterns, because of prostitution and thats hy they talk about the mother only.

I think being confused about the lyrics is ok. I believe its on purpose that the lyrics seems to be the words of someone caring about another one (in which both already know each other) and bring up stuffs like "they speak about your mother" as a thing between them we are not supposed to understand (only they do), we are only supposed to understand its meaningfull although we don't know what it means 🤷♂️😂 I think that's great.

rammstein try to write lyrics allways in 2 meanings a positive one and a negative one. tahts why they allways say its on you what you take out of it so you can see the song as something for life (like love stuff-"who hold your hand" etc). or as something from a pimps view who says "come in my boat" (work for me) with that in mind,watch the video and lyrics again and you will understand the song better thats not my phantasy.thats what rammstein said by them self in old interviews i like how you enjoy it.i love them
