Thank you, some lovely memories there. With my parents and brother we stayed many times in a caravan at Little Clacton. A special way of getting there on The Queen of the Channel from Tower Pier, London via Southend pier then for latter years in dads car. In 1954 I won the junior talent contest at the Pavilion when Ronnie Mills and his orchestra had their show. Afterwards a lovely afternoon tea at Cordys almost opposite the pier. Some years later a couple of holidays at Butlins with my friend on our NSU Quickly mopeds. Clacton was our absolute favourite.

Thank you Linda. Great memories. I was born here in 58 and still here. I’ve never seen a picture of the shops at rosemary and Jackson rd. I could see them from my bedroom window which is now Roland’s the chemist. Thanks again.

This video is a great Nostalgia trip. I was born in Clacton but left it in 1940 when the town was evacuated for WW2. We returned in 1945 and I attended Colchester Tech. (A perfect school for me as it laid a foundation for a career in engineering.) Left in 1948 for that career at various places ending up in the USA

Some of these images (especially the pier approach) give me a weird feeling. It’s like I was there at that time but I wasn’t.

And I also remember when the Mod's and the Rocker's used to clash on Clacton beach. And the donkey ride's I remember them well, as I used to ride on them, as a child. Ah! very fond memory's, those were the good old day's which unfortunately will never come back, what a shame.

Like the photo of The Warwick Open Market at the junction of Old Road, and Station Road where in the left-hand side front corner of this photo use to stand The Warwick Castle Pub which once upon a time was a large Green painted Public House that got itself condemned for demolition. It took years after they demolished this Pub before they got around to filling in the underground Pub Cellars, and in fact the now Open Market started up before these Pub Cellars were finally filled in and the Market ground was then leveled off. I also remember opposite the Warwick Castle Market in its early days was a small DIY Shop, which also sold off-cuts of Timber etc; and next door to this DIY Shop was the worse Fish, and Chips Take Away Shop I've ever been in whereby all the Food was greasy, and it only got any business and custom because of the adjacent Cinema, and the fact that it stayed open late. Those were the Day's from the mid-1950's and onward's Doe's anyone remember The Pirate Radio Day's between April 1964, and August 1967, and that white passenger Boat that use to go out from Clacton Sea Front near to The Pier for trips out to and around Radio Caroline, and London, and also from during the start of The 1970's when RNI dropped Anchor and broadcasted from The Mebo: 2 in International Waters directly off of the center point outwards from Clacton Pier. This was a time back then of Great Music, and Fun to be in Clacton-On-Sea, and back during that period of time in Clacton has to-date never been equaled. And yes...., Butlin was still going back then as well.

pascoecharlie My gran, Madge Merry worked at the Warwick Castle for years, I believe the owner was Joan Topson. If anyone has pics of it pls post, would luv to see.

I remember everything you mention here. When my dear late mother & I walked into town from windmill park where we lived for most of my childhood I use to run up the steps of the Warwick castle, along past the entrance & then back down the stairs the other side to meet my mum again, then we would carry on our journey into town, I always looked forward to that special little moment, we were both so sad when it was demolished. Clacton has severely gone downhill nowadays, although I haven’t lived there in decades but had to return briefly after my parents passed away. I also remember the beautiful old tree where the fountains are now, it use to be decorated with Christmas lights a few weeks before the big day with a switch on evening that we use to attend. Lovely simple pleasures that are now long gone. The place is now populated with druggies & many with severe mental health problems, can’t believe as a child in the 1960’s we would put on our best clothes to go into town. Life has changed but not for the best I’m afraid.

@@sallybutton6237 Yes Sally, I know what you mean when you say Clacton has gone downhill, for when I was last there back in 1995 the One-Way traffic system in the Town Centre was being use as a Race-track by boy racers during the evening period too late. While back in Clacton Heydays the Sea-Front was packed with holiday makers on any warm Summers Day, and there was plenty to do since there was plenty of Entertainment Venues, as upon Clacton Pier there was - The Jolly Roger at the end of the Pier and the Ball-Room at the entrance to the Pier. There also was an Open Air Music Venue mostly for Children on the left hand side when going down Pier-Gap just before you reached the Pier. There was once a Music-Hall in Rosemary Road that was closed down and turned into a Bingo-Hall. Other entertainment was at The Princes Theatre in Clacton Town Hall were they also held Wrestling and at the West Cliff Theatre near too Clacton Hospital where they had for years Francis Golightly Presents. There was even a Small Zoo as you headed towards Butlins from Clacton. And..., before I forget - The Punch and Judy Show on The Beach next to The Pier and some Donkey's, and those Butlin's Peddle Tri-Cycles were being driven along The Sea Front and down Pier Avenue For they even had a Swimming Pool on The Pier. Those were the day's, never to be seen again. But we really were spoilt for choice back then.
